Warner brothers is serious about doing a DVD of the Donner Cut for Superman II. As reported on the Superman Homepage:

July 1, 2004: Warner Bros. Moves to Bring Extended “Superman II” to DVD.

A Warner Home Video spokesman made the following statement via an email regarding the possible DVD release of an extended version/Richard Donner cut of "Superman II"...

Warner Home Video is supportive of an extended version of Superman II on DVD. However, there are complex legal and creative issues that need to be resolved before the film can be re-released. Warner Home Video is presently addressing these issues.

No doubt the legal issues mentioned have to do with problems the WB have encountered with the Salkinds who produced the film.

This would be a release of Director Richard Donner's version of the sequel that was mostly filmed simultaneously with the first movie. The salkinds got upset with Donner, and wanting to replace him as the director of the sequel, was forced to redo and reshoot some 70 percent of the movie. The Orginal version of the film was a continuation of the first film, and much better. See what the film was to be with script, images from scenes shot by Donner, and some clips as well, here:

Donner's original Superman II

Lets keep our fingers crossed Superman fans for this to happen.

Interesting...

Gotta agree...the scenes I read WERE better in that version.

Qjakal, they only had, from what I can glean off of everyone involved, three weeks of shooting left on Superman 2 when Superman 1 came out. In fact Margot Kidder just recently came out saying that most of the film was cut, and it is in a vault in London somewhere. She said she saw the film while they where making 1 with the rest of the cast. From what I can gather, the only thing they didn't shoot yet was the Niagra falls scenes. If such a cut were to be done, Donner would have to cut in Lester's Niagra Falls stuff. Donner is so pissed that he might not want to do that, and someone else at Warners would have to step in to cut that scene in. I am assuming that is what the "creative differences" refers to. John Williams had even written the score for it. I am hoping that they recorded it, and it was with the newly found (2001) 6 tracks massters for the Superman 1 score. I hate that, what sounds like a highschool band, score in Superman 2. I am not sure if such a project would warrant the studio to bring Williams in to rescore it if it wasn't scored at the time. If not, they might have someone like John Debny conduct the already written Williams score. And I am hoping that they get either the London Symphony Orchestra (who had performed the first movies score) or an equivalent to do the score as well. But alot of the Donner shot stuff went into the 2 night presentation of the movie by ABC to spread it out to 2 nights and I can tell you the stuff Donner did is really great. I am also assuming that now that Brando is gone, the price to make this Directors cut has just gone down as I think he had to be paid another 3 mill for his performance in any version of the movie that came out with his scenes in it if he was still alive.

The only thing I am really curious about is how they were, and are if this DVD version comes out, going to origianlly end 2. As you can read in the script, Superman flies around the earth at lightspeed and turns time back. Well they did that at the end of 1. That wasn't supposed to happen at the end of 1. What happened was that, when they where running out of time to complete 1, Donner and the studio didn't feel that the ending had the impact that it should. Originally Lois and her car are supposed to have been almost crushed by the sinkhole, but Superman arrives jsut in time and pulls the car out. Then he pulls her out of the car and throws the car into space. Well it was one of those things that looked nice on paper, but didn't work when filmed. So Donner and Chris Reeve sat down, and it was Chris who suggested Lois dying, him defying his fathers demand of "It is forbidden for you to interfere with human history" and then he flies and turns time back. So Chris wrote the scene, and then they filmed it. This also was another thorn between the Salkinds and Donner as when they shot the desert stuff, they where sneaking over the boarder from Canada as the Salkinds didn't want to pay the expense of having to use an American crew for those shots per the Union rules. Warner's told them to shoot it and made the Salkind's use American crew and pay the fee.

So that brings me to my original thought. How where they going to end 2? Chris said before the reshoots of 2, right after 1's release that Superman already turned time back once, and they didnt want to do it again. Or would it have been a simple look by Superman of "Well, this worked once, so I might as well do it again"? Donner had said that he had wanted to keep Lois knowing that he is Superman, and then explore that theme in Supes 3 and 4 in later interviews. So I am wondering what was going to happen since nothing for Superman 2 was shot after Warner's stepped in, and the last scenes shot for 1 are the death of Lois scenes.

It will also be nice to see Donner's version as the special effects shots will be different. When the Salkind's fired Donner and had Lester finisht the film, per the contract with Warners; who was now funding 2, and the DGA rules, they had to complete the film in the same time that Donner was contracted to shoot both 1 and 2 together. To do this, and because they now had to reshoot so many scenes to take Donner's name off of the directors credit, they decided to redo alot of the EFX. In order to get those effects done so fast, they instructed the effects house (No longer the original people who did 1, but some low brow TV commercial EFX houses in LA) to do all of the effects with either dummies or dolls. That is why you see alot of dolls and dressed up manequins flying around in 2. That is also why don't see the fountain moving at the end of the film when Superman flies to the White House with the new roof. They told the EFX house you dont have time so just do a static shot of it. But since all of the EFX where shot by Donner and the original EFX crew, those shots will be put back into the film on the DVD release.

And again, since the Niagra falls stuff wasn't shot, How will donner do it. I mean the way Lois finds out he is Superman in the Donner version is much different from what Lester shot, which is the only part of that scene shot. They can use Kidder's screen test that is on the DVD for Superman 1 which has the scene directed by Donner as originally scripted, but it was meant as just a test shot. The only problems with that is, even though it is in widescreen and is great, Kidder's hair is short, and not the length that it is in the rest of the film. Also, since it was jsut a test shoot, they only shot it with one camera, and I am sure that Donner wanted more camera angles to add dramatic impact. If this ever does happen, it will be interesting to see what Donner will do.

If you also listen to the Donner and Mankelweicz's commentary on the Superman 1 DVD, they both talk about how they had storylines and treatments written for later Superman films. I think I read in an interview that they had written stuff all the way up to Superman 5. It would have been nice if the Salkind's had never fired him, and they could have made those movies to see what they would have came up with.

And lets feel lucky that this script wasn't made

It was going to be directed by Tim Burton, and produced by ulta idiot producer John Peters. This is the first script that he demanded that Jimmy Oleson be gay. Also, these geniuses had the bright idea of having Nicholas Cage as Superman. That would have totally killed the thing, and online polls conducted by Warner Brother's consistently showed that people thought this was the dumbest idea ever. Parts of the script are great, and parts are really stupid (i.e.-L-Ron, the gay robot companion of Brainiac). Kevin Smith later divulged in an interview that he was forced to write alot of the dumb things from ideas that Peter's demanded, and that they where constantly at war over the script.

I really do like Alex Fords script here. This treated the characters with respect, and would have made a great movie. It would have even had a brief scene with Wonder Woman's alter ego:

Also more good news

That HACK! (Not Micheal Moore) McG (real name-Joseph McGinty Nicol). is not directing the next Superman films. Thank god. I am so glad he wont be ruining the movie with the emotional depth that he brought to such "Crapfests" as Charlie's Angel's 1 and 2.

There is also a rumor that a high up Warner's exec. has talked to Bryan Singer, who directed the X-men movies, and the upcomming X-Men 3, about directing it:

Now here is a guy who would do the films good, and I think he has enough clout to throw away that J.J. Abram's script and have a new one made that will be more akin to a great adventure for the Big Guy. If he doesn't have it thrown away, you can bet he will have it re-written to something better, and may even have some fellow writers who scribed X-Men 2 to do the new script. Here is hoping that this isnt just a rumor.

Also, an actress has been picked for Lois Lane for Smallville. Her name is Erica Durance.
