Okay, so this is basically Manic Pixie Dream Girl: The Series. Well, I suppose it was inevitable. I do like Zooey Deschanel. I certainly hope this show is smarter and more subtle than it appears in previews.

---

Wow, they've used every line used from the previews in the first two minutes. And I notice they were using wildly doctorred footage there, too. This does not portend well.

Are these men supposed to be gay? Is this going to be addressed? Why are they talking and moving that way? Does the director have a secret he wants to share with us?

You know, as an actual depressive, Zooey Deschanel is not as adorkable as I remember.

Huh, so they're establishing that she's a dork because she can only communicate in
Lord of the Rings references. Is 'dork' really the right word for that?

Did you just make up your own theme song? Actually no, she made it up ten minutes ago, during the opening. And it actually is her official theme song, apparently. Odd that she would choose to repeat the verse she made up during scene of her humiliation. But then, we don't actually know anything about what happened there, do we?

Seriously, are these guys gay? The show doesn't seem to be acknowledging that they're gay, but they're making it insultingly obvious. Is this supposed to be dramatic irony? At the end of the episode are we going to learn that she was actually holed up in a gay bordello this whole time?

My goodness, they're focusing so much more on these three maybe-gay characters than on Zooey. I know exactly
nothing about her, and isn't she supposed to be the star? I mean, what does she do for a living? Does she model those sexy nerd glasses?

"Is that fun for...you guys?" Seriously, how is this character not supposed to know he's gay? Was this series written by the characters from
Sex and the City?

Nobody behaves like this.
Nobody. What the fuck am I watching? This feels like a minstrel show, except I can't tell which race we're all hating.

Huh, so Zooey's supposed to be a virgin now? Like, literally a virgin? I can suspend my disbelief to a point, but you can't expect me to believe that Zooey Deschanel knows nothing about human attraction.

Okay, so apparently she was fat as a kid. That...explains nothing.

You know, I was wrong this whole time. These producers are visionaries. It was a bold move to people their primetime comedy exclusively with non-funny people.

I see. Zooey has Aspergers. That's it. She has female Aspergers. That's oh so fucking hilarious. You know, the Big Bang Theory was one thing, but this is different.
Rain Man would not have been okay if they had been expecting the audience to want to fuck Rain Man. This is more like The Hot Retard Episode of Drawn Together: The Series.

SO these guys are obviously gay...but they're also neanderthal straight men? Is this supposed to be subtle social commentary about post-Jersey Shore America? Write your characters so they make sense, goddammit!

This dorkiness-cum-Aspergers is getting really distracting. Let me guess, they're going to have her dress in a clown costume next, and then say, "I thought I'd show him my funny side!"
Wah wah wahhhhh....

This show is wildly abrasive, and I hate everyone I see. There is no joke here.

Hey, how cute, they're using the song from
Dirty Dancing to do an homage to the scene from Top Gun. Wait, that doesn't make sense...

Okay, I do want to hug Zooey. This final moment is sweet. Unearned, of course, and contradicted by everything that's happened so far. Really it feels more like a fat girl's fantasy of her gay friends coming and saving the day when she's down in the dumps...but sweet all the same. Well. That was somewhat pleasant at times. I hope ehatever audience this was intended for, whether they're bicurious frat guys or fat female Asperger's patients, will truly enjoy this series. I wish them the best of luck.
:usa:

hey, i LIKE this show! and zooey deschanel is the most adorkable human ever.

I agree with you Emily, and I don't think those guys are gay but I could be wrong.

I think they could have done a better job with the first ep, but all in all it was not too bad.
