For those who want to help...
Joby dropped me a note last night to ask about some specific needs. (I'll be posting others as she passes them along.) I've been on the phone most of the morning talking with folks at various companies, looking for them to send specific items. Most are leary of individual efforts and will only work through agencies...which are dropping the ball in some areas. Soooo....it's left to individuals to get donations locally and/or purchase items to be sent.
NOTE: FedEx and UPS are now able to get packages into this area.
These are items of immediate need right now that they aren't getting (at Joby's shelter). Those who want to help can grab them and have them ready for shipping....
Special Dietary Needs Items -
Enfamil baby formula
Neocate baby formula
Ensure
ANY FOOD! They ran out completely last night.
Clothing (various sizes for adults and kids) -
Underwear
Socks
T-Shirts
Other Items -
Surgical masks (or dust masks if you can't get the surgical)
Cleaning supplies (primarily those for killing mold)
Stuffed animals for kids (helps comfort them)
The items above are in immediate need. Here are some additional things that will be an ongoing need...
Tarps
Cleaning supplies
Baby supplies
Feminine hygience items
Towels...a biggie this week!
Washcloths
Batteries
Flashlights
Surgical masks
Shovels
Toothbrushes
Clothes (the largest and smallest sizes that are less common are needed msot.)
Dry shoes
BLEACH BLEACH AND MORE BLEACH
MOLD cleaner
Walkie-Talkies (where phone service is out but people are staying in touch with neighbors in isolated areas where it is difficult for police to get to easily)
Motrin and Tylenol (or generics)
Baby meds like kids allergy medicine
Topical ointments for bug bites or rashes
CRUTCHES and wheelchairs
CLEAN sheets and blankets (I just took a load of blankets to a bundle service cleaner for the Red Cross and am being charged almost 200 dollars just to launder them due to water shortages)
Disposable cameras (for people to take photos of home damage for insurance to avoid being told their homes aren't going to be rebuilt, etc.)
Flat Tire Plug kits. (I have had four flat tires in two weeks from driving over roofing nails.)
In addition, Joby suggested people sending letters of care and support to those down there. Even though they're somewhat annonymous and they don't know us, knowing that someone cares will be a great comfort.
If you contact me at [email protected] or Ray at [email protected], we'll give you the mailing information along with any updates.
The above needs are only for the shelter Joby is working at. If you wish to get more involved and aid other shelters as well, see this thread.
Thanks gang!
