I started another thread so I don't hijack Cheshire's "Movits" thread, which reminded me of this.

Did anyone catch Spinal Tap's "comeback" on The Daily Show with John Stewart?

(Funky) Sex Farm! Never thought I'd see the day. The classic Tap hit "Sex Farm", all pimped out, complete with new rap section.

Not sure what was more entertaining....the song itself, or shooting the shit with Stewart after. Apparently, the boys have been busy...with Nigel racing miniature horses, as soon as he can find miniature jockeys. Derek has opened a chain of "Big Bottom Burgers"....which uses the horses Nigel can't use. So, it all works out. 🙂

It is SO good to see Tap back again with a new album. Which further reinforces my previous statement that if those MTV assholes remake "This is Spinal Tap" with some 20-something sparkly losers, I am seriously going to prison for multiple murders. 😛issed

Long live the ONLY Tap!

As some here have noticed, I am a vacuum-tube aficionado. As a result, I get catalogs aimed at guitar amplifier construction and repair, but none of them has a knob that goes to 11.

Well, it's not actually the knob that goes to 11, but the whole amp itself. When you have your guitar at 10, and your amp at 10 and you still need more, where can you go? Nowhere, right? Unless you have one of those babies that go to 11.

They're 1 louder. 🙂

(On a serious note...he he he...note...ok, ok, I'll stop.....ANYWAY...I'm not sure who it was, but I do remember there was a company that made a Tap special that did go to 11. I'll have to dig it up, but I'm sure of this. It was a goof, but all the dials went to 11.)

Cripes! Tell me they are not seriously considering remaking Spinal Tap. While probably not the fan some are, it's still some funny stuff, and remaking it for a new generation would indeed be worthy of a killing spree.

I never saw Spinal Tap the first time around...shakes head at myself..

Incidentally, my namesake tube has 1 million ohms plate resistance. That's more than 11, innit?

Oh, definitely. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's ripping someone off. It seems that over the last ten years or so, and even more recently, there's a rash of "Well, I got no original ideas, let's take someone else's!" As someone who's had his own ideas and work ripped off...it really bugs the shit out of me.

What really kills me is that they'll rip you off out of laziness, vapidness or just a total inability to come up with an original thought...and then make it digestable by calling it an "homage". And then all the people with the same lack of originality and 2-second attention span hail the thief as having such "great ideas!" Retards.

I saw it years after the fact, myself. On vhs from an old mom-n-pop video chain long since gone. I think I had been so pumped by my circle of friends at the time that it was the greatest thing since toast, that I went into it wrong. It IS funny, but it's alot more subtle than I'd been expecting. Dead-on satire, just not my usual comedy choice. Some bits still kill me, though. The way the band runs through drummers was a hoot...

I think there's alot of laziness going on with some of the remake attempts in recent years. I guess for me as a movie fan, it depends on whether the director can bring something new to the story. I love me some horror films, and some remakes in that genre have actually proven decent.

There's just some things that shouldn't be touched, though. Don't even try to redo something like Gone With the Wind, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, King Kong(okay, I hear the Jackson one actually was good, though sad - I still refuse to see it on basic principles). Even lowbrow stuff deserves some of that "unfuckwitable" status. Don't redo Pink Flamingos, or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or This is Spinal Tap!

Yeah, a few remakes have been deserving of attention. As always, I can never say anything as an absolute, as I don't believe in absolutes. For the MOST part, though, remakes are laziness...and just flat-out stealing another's work (which has happened) is just a shitty thing to do. 😉

If a remake is done for a reason, and there are several, then I say go for it if you have the blessing of the original creator and are going to treat it with respect. There are some films deserving of a remake because the ability to bring them to life wasn't available at the time...sometimes the ability to really use today's special effects can help a film reach a new audience. I guess it depends on what you're trying to do.

Take TV shows. If you're trying to simply cash in on something that was once popular and just throw sparkly dewds and babes in it (Knight Rider, et al) then don't bother.

But, if your intention is to make the show better, to explore things the original didn't or to follow a story to its conclusion when the original didn't (Battlestar Galactica), then it can be really good. BSG in particular was great because it actually did what the original creator wanted to do before ABC forced the original mini-series into quick production as a series to "strike while the iron was hot". Rather than have the ability to plan out the story he wanted, Glen Larson (and Richard Hatch who was really behind exploring BSG as hard-core social sci-fi) was forced to pound out episodes...often with actors being handed script pages as the scene was being shot. It turned a potentially legendary and groundbreaking show into "The A-Team in Space". So, the remake was in this case much better and more along the lines of the original intention of the show.

(Not to totally change the focus of this thread...but if you really want to see a "preview" of what BSG could have been and what it was once Moore got a hold of it, you should read the BSG novels written by Richard Hatch after the original show went off the air. Good reading and rather surreal. It was the first to explore the Cylons as "humanity's children" and hinted at them working on human-Cylon hybrid models.)

In general, though...leave the classics alone. Some things don't need to be remade, and Spinal Tap is one of them. And I just KNOW that if they do remake it, that unbearable retard Jack Black is gonna be in it. 🙁
