Bethlehem: 'Miracle' Baby Draws Crowds
They're calling the infant boy who was born in Bethlehem on November 25 to devout Muslim parents a "miracle baby." His birth date was the 27th day of the holy month of Ramadan, which is honored as the night the Koran was revealed to the prophet Mohammad. Crowds of Palestinians are thronging to the refugee camp in which he was born to catch a glimpse of him. The child is considered a miracle because he was born with a large birthmark across his cheek that forms in Arabic letters the name of his late uncle, Ala, a Hamas militant killed by Israeli troops after he was suspected of having planned a suicide bombing in November 2002 that killed 12 people on a Jerusalem bus, reports Reuters.

The family calls the birthmark a divine message of support for the Palestinians against Israel. Reuters notes that some Bethlehem-area Christians dismiss it as lacking any religious significance. Meanwhile, the Israeli army will not comment, although one source told Reuters, "It sounds very freaky."
The family insists it is not a hoax. The child's grandmother, Aysha Ayyad told Reuters that the birthmark was a sign "the soldiers can kill our sons but not our spirit." She hoped that the Israelis and Palestinians would make peace. The imam from the refugee camp's main mosque called the birthmark a "gift from God." The boy was given his uncle's name, Ala.
