Stupid Animal Question

A Chinese Snakehead fish, a unique species that can live out of water for up to three days, has been spotted in a Crofton, Maryland, pond. The fish is a native to Central China, and biologists are puzzled as to how it got to Maryland. This creature is said to be an ecological threat since it has a remarkable advantage over other fish. Biologists have tried to catch it but failed. They have also alerted fisherman to capture the fish in to hinder it from breeding. Now, I presum that hindering a species from breeding would cause extinction. I was always given the impresion that extinction is bad and we were trying to prevent any more animals/plants/whatever from becoming extinct, isnt encouraging people to hinder breeding doing the exact opposite?

As I understand it, the snakehead fish is extremely plentiful in it's native environment (China), and is in no danger of becoming extinct. The problem lies in the fact that it kills and eats native species of fish, and causes a drop in the population of other species. What wildlife officials are doing is attmpting to save other, native species from extinction.
