Stupid Baseball Writers

tieler, I agree with you. Another guy who I think belongs there is Tommy John. Yes, he didn't make it to 300 wins, but, he had a 288-231 career record, with a 3.34 ERA, and he missed half the 1974 season, and all of 1975, with a career threatening injury. Not to mention the fact that the procedure he underwent, now has saved the careers of several other Hall worthy pitchers, namely John Smoltz, who would have been finished at age 34 in 1999, without it, and never would have been the dominant stopper, and now great starting pitcher, that he is today.

Blyleven and Morris definitely belong in the Hall. Sometimes the writers aren't too kind. Tom Seaver got in on his first try, but Phil Niekro, who had seven more career wins than Seaver, had to wait until his fifth year to get in.

I dont understand how the writers think sometimes. Another case is Dale Murphy. 398 homers, 2 MVP's, and he's not in, but Gary Carter is.

I think the Hall election process should be changed. It should be 1-3 fans,
1-3 managers, and 1-3 writers. This way, it is more of a balance. I dont know if that will ever be, though.

You can't compare Dale Murphy to Gary Carter. Murphy for the majority of his career was an outfielder. Gary Carter for the majority of his career was a catcher. Everyone knows and outfielder will be more productive than a catcher. That is just a fact. As far as Phil Niekro is concerned, Phil Niekro played until he was 48 years old. He may have won 7 more games than Tom Seaver but Seaver left the game at the age of 41. Niekro was more of a compiler at the end of his career. what you also failed to throw in there Mitchell is that he LOST 274 games. Seaver lost 205. Explain to me how you noted that Nierko won 7 more games but did not tell us the whole story by letting us know that Nierko lost 69 more games than Seaver. Seaver was a dominate pitcher. He lead the league in strikeouts on five occasions. Won three Cy Young awards and stuckout 200 or more batters in 9 straight years. Also won Rookie of Year and let's remember he pitched the majority of his career with the New York Mets. He won 199 career games with them alone. So I can understand why Seaver got in on his first try. Can't you???

Alan Trammell is another one that should be getting more votes. He has better career numbers than Ozzie Smith who's already in but apparently since he didn't do back flips he's not good enough to get into the Hall.

World Series MVP's:

Trammell = 1
Smith = 0

It's a shame.

The Hall of Fame has, over the years, gone through a couple of transitions.

It became the Hall of Very Good and now, the Hall of Pretty Good.

Does Jim Rice belong in the Hall of Fame as it was known for most of its years? No.

Does he belong in the Hall of Fame as it has been known for the last 20 years? Yes.

There are so many players who were elected in the last 20 years who have the same or lesser numbers than Rice does but because Rice didn't smile as much as they did and had a contentious relationship with the press, he's still out in the cold.

The writers have no business voting on such an important issue.

It should be turned over to a committee of seasoned, knowledgeable, baseball professionals - elder statesmen, if you will, who would decide who gets into the Hall.

I think my discontent sort of lies in the names I see put on a ballot year after year. A good number of them wouldn't wind up in the Hall of Fame in the high school they attended.

Rice will wind up inducted, in time. As for now, the sportswriters he disrespected have their say in affairs. Unfair? I do believe so. However, that's how things are. They're the ones doing the electing.
