With the baseball regular season about to end on Sunday, I thought I would start a thread discussing what forum baseball fans think were the biggest surprises of the 2013 season. I'll post a few, and hopefully we can get the discussion going.
1. The Braves relatively easy division title. I knew the Braves would likely be much improved, but, if people remember my pre season predictions, I picked the Nationals to win the NL East, and the Braves as one of the wild cards. The Braves have slumped in September.. but.. they have had a pretty easy ride to the NL East championship.
2. The underachieving of the Nationals. This team had the wonderful season last year, and came back to earth. Now manager Davey Johnson is retiring. It will be interesting to see how that affects the Nats in 2014.
3. The Phillies Collapse. I knew they had dropped back a little from their five straight NL East titles, but, this year they really slid back into less than even mediocrity.
4. The Yankees: They officially missed the postseason last night (The other one being 2008, Joe Girardi's first year as their manager) for only the second time since 1993. That is a long run of success, a la the Braves of the 90s. Granted, Derek Jeter has been out most of the year, but, the Yankees are also advancing in age. Unless they get some new blood, this could be a turning corner for the Yankees. Rivera and Petitte are retiring, and although Derek Jeter has one year left on his contract, how well will he come back next year at age 40?
So those are some of my surprises for 2013. Any others?
