Surprises Of The 2013 Baseball Season

With the baseball regular season about to end on Sunday, I thought I would start a thread discussing what forum baseball fans think were the biggest surprises of the 2013 season. I'll post a few, and hopefully we can get the discussion going.

1. The Braves relatively easy division title. I knew the Braves would likely be much improved, but, if people remember my pre season predictions, I picked the Nationals to win the NL East, and the Braves as one of the wild cards. The Braves have slumped in September.. but.. they have had a pretty easy ride to the NL East championship.

2. The underachieving of the Nationals. This team had the wonderful season last year, and came back to earth. Now manager Davey Johnson is retiring. It will be interesting to see how that affects the Nats in 2014.

3. The Phillies Collapse. I knew they had dropped back a little from their five straight NL East titles, but, this year they really slid back into less than even mediocrity.

4. The Yankees: They officially missed the postseason last night (The other one being 2008, Joe Girardi's first year as their manager) for only the second time since 1993. That is a long run of success, a la the Braves of the 90s. Granted, Derek Jeter has been out most of the year, but, the Yankees are also advancing in age. Unless they get some new blood, this could be a turning corner for the Yankees. Rivera and Petitte are retiring, and although Derek Jeter has one year left on his contract, how well will he come back next year at age 40?

So those are some of my surprises for 2013. Any others?

THE DODGERS!!!

On June 22...they were 30-42...9-1/2 games back of Arizona...and in LAST!!!
Then went on a 42-8 streak!!! Eventually reaching a "high water mark" of 83-55...and 12 games clear of Arizona!!!
Clinched the division last week!!!
But only 8-12 in their last 20. Albeit they have been resting everyone...here and there...since clinching.

And let's not forget about the Indians!!! They surged into the 2nd Wild Card spot...still with a chance of capturing the 1st spot!!!
And If they make it...and win the "play in" game...good chance of Terry Francona returning to Boston, in the Divisional round!!!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the near invisibility of the defending champion San Francisco Giants. When you win the World Series 2 out of 3 years it's no fluke. How many teams can actually say they have won the Series 2 out of 3 years? Their pitching was nowhere to be found this season and runs were non-existent. You can't stay on top forever, so realistically I didn't expect them to win it all again, but I didn't expect a total collapse either. Should be interesting to see how they rebound next season.

The putrid, hated jints are not worthy of mention. They will finish below .500 this year.

May your hopes for a rebound next year come to nothing.

Public service announcement to all fans of the putrid, hated jints:

Repent before you die or The Big Dodger in the Sky will send you to Hell. :firedevil

LOL! mils, I love how you reduced the size of your text when you said "putrid, hated, jints". Classic.

I personally think the Yankees missing the playoffs is rather humorous. I'm sorry that Derek Jeter was injured most of the season. He's a class act, even if he does play for the Evil Empire, but.. the Yankees have been out of control with their spending for years.

I was listening to some commentator who said the Bankees may be in trouble for a while. If they cant get out of A Fraud's contract, they are in over their heads for at least the next four years, and may not be able to re load, because the Steinbrenner boys want to get the payroll below where they would have to pay the luxury tax. It might be difficult for them to build a really good team, with A-Fraud taking up over 30 mil in payroll space.

The biggest surprise to me is that people are still talking about baseball now that football has started. :yowzer: :xpeepsofa

It's the most exciting time of the year coming up for baseball, maniac. The playoffs! WOO HOO! Football? borringggg!

Baseball playoffs are getting watered down like the NFL playoffs. What with the wild cards 10 teams will make the playoffs...BARF! When the Yankees are out of the playoffs it's always a surprise. Too much money too many old guys. With 10 teams in I wouldn't venture a guess on who will go all the way... OK the Red Sox.

Mitch! baseball is one of the most boring sports. all they do is stand around most of the game. watching grass grow is far more exhilarating! :sorry:

And yet those same zombies still hold the record for most runs scored in a single game at turd stadium.. and they did it with a team below .500.

And they will finish below .500 this year, which is exactly where they belong.
And the Dodgers will finish with 90+ wins as NL West Champions, which is exactly where they belong.

PS: Were you the bastard who stabbed a Dodger fan to death near AT&T Park on Wednesday night? Or was it a close friend of yours?

First off, leave it to the classless turd blue fans to bring up murder and crime when the topic is baseball..

That said, the incident you falsely accuse of happening at AT&T happened four blocks from the park - and at least 90 minutes after the game had ended. However, Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten to a coma while on turd blue property, under the supposed protection of turd blue park security while turd blue fans stood, watched and did nothing. Mind you, this wasn't four blocks away. How anyone could support a team who offers such to fans on their own property is beyond me.

The Dodgers had only to beat the poor, limping below .500 San Francisco Giants to gain home field in the playoffs? How did that go? Well, don't feel bad. Probably saved another fan from being beaten to near death on turd blue property while turd fans and security did nothing but watch.

I also take it turd blue fans have selective memory when it comes to Giants fan Mark Allen Antenocruz who was shot to death while in the turd blue stadium parking lot in 2003. Yet another reason to visit historic turd blue stadium. They offer so much joy to the game of baseball.

Laugh, aren't you the person who bet your own good money that the Dodgers would win less than 91.5 games this season? I seem to remember that I will search for the thread. I am so very sorry that you have lost your bet, the Dodgers having won their 92nd game on Friday. Yes, it is so very sad.

Meh I lost a bet. Not the first time, won't be the last. That's why it's called gambling. You should save the violins for any fan that visits turd stadium. Good swerve by the way, to ignore the obvious.

i am also surprised to see the ups and down coming in to the performance of teams but it is quite strange that some of them are sticked to it for a while

May you lose every single time that you bet against the fine and noble Dodgers!

Just in case anybody forgot, the putrid hated motherfucking jints filth finished the season well below 91.5 wins. They had 76 wins and 86 losses. :rowfull: :rowfull:

For anyone under the age of 30 - if you google the last title the LA turd blue won in baseball, one does exist. I promise! - just in case anybody forgot.

Put it this way.. the last time the Dodgers won a World Series.. the video game "Madden Football" was played for the first time. Ever.

I'll say it one more time, so that even fans of the putrid motherfucking hated jnts can understand it:

The L.A. Dodgers have won 5 World Series Championships and the putrid motherfucking hated S.F. jnts have won 2.

Just for the record, how old are you?

Your question suggests I am not old enough to remember the last time the turd blue won a title. Therein lies my point.

Your point is taken. You are young, ignorant, and unconcerned with history.

You do realize how long ago 1988 was, don't you? A person could have been born, lived a full childhood, graduated college and have an adult life since that time. Think about it. You have to live life in the present. I can respect history, I just refuse to live in it. This isn't the 80s anymore.

Your comments are that of a bitter old man who has trouble relating to the fact this is now the year 2013. They do have phones without cords these days. Barbara Eden is now nearly 80 and most of the crew of Gilligan's Island have passed away. Linda Blair has been a full grown woman for quite sometime now. You really should leave your cave sometime - and not to worry, the dinosaurs are all gone these days.

For the record, I am 63 years old, in good health, and I am now on my third cellphone.
I never much liked Barbara Eden, but I do admit to still admiring Heidi Klum who is now 40 years old.
I never watched Gillgan's Island, finding the Bob Denver character to be boring.

Your comments are those of an arrogant young ignoramus.

Back on topic for this thread:

I was not surprised that the putrid motherfucking hated jints bastards finished below .500 this year. That is their natural place and they have returned to it. I have enjoyed hating the putrid motherfucking hated jints bastards since 1955 and I fully intend to go on doing so.
