I was once called "the Blackest White guy I know" by a Black friend of mine because I knew so much about Soul music. I thought I'd ask you all what your favorite Soul/R&B songs are. One of my favorites has got to be "Superstition", by Stevie Wonder. That song never shows its age, and it's from 1972!

"With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston w/Syreeta. IMO quite simply -THE- most beautiful R&B song ever. It's like ear candy.

Mimi 🙂

Sad news, Mimi, in case you didn't know. Syreeta Wright died of cancer on July 6th of this year.

I did not know that, and I am sorry to hear it. She had a spectacular voice...liquid gold.

Boy, you ARE the grim reaper of the music world, aren't you? 😉 j/k

Back on topic, I am really enjoying Joss Stone's new song "You Had Me". Despite being a young blonde haired beauty, she has one helluva soul voice.

Oh, and darn near anything by Toni Braxton, especially her earlier stuff.

Mimi 🙂

Mimi, I'm a voracious reader and when it comes to music, I rarely miss a thing. That song was always a favorite of mine. I also love "Let's Get It On", by Marvin Gaye.

"Soul Power"- Derek Martin
"Who's Making Love"- Johnny Taylor
"Groove Me"- King Floyd
"Let Me Be Good To You"- Carla Thomas

Oh heck, the Stax/Volt box set Vol. 1 and Ray Charles "The Birth of Soul" , as well.

LOVE that song! that and "Sexual Healing" make me feel robbed that he died so young.

also love; BB King's "Hummingbird" and "The Thrill is Gone", and just about anything sung by Otis Redding (my "aren't men wonderful?" music) or Janis Joplin (my "don't men stink?" music).

Otis Redding!!! Have you heard his duet with Carla Thomas... "New Year's Resolution"? I got chills just typing those words. Otis wrote the book on Soul music. He's probably singing with Ray Charles in Soul Heaven as we speak!

So many great Otis Redding songs:

"I Can't Turn You Loose"
"My Lover's Prayer"
"These Arms of Mine"
"I Got Dreams to Remember"
"Hard to Handle"
"Trick or Treat"

Syreeta died too??? Christ! Everyone is going..shows we gettin old. Since some of you know im the true disco king round here (lol) I could list off a ton of r&b based tracks (as alot of the american disco was r&b crossed over..at least in the underground) but list would be too long. I will say EWF has quite a few on my list. And I will mention one that I dunno if anyone here knows but since Syreeta was mentioned.."Lets Make A Deal" by GC Cameron & Syreeta. Good and solid R&B LP they had together in 1978 which spauned that one disco hit which was mainly a club play track.

As for R&B now days? It dont exsist! But I hear alot of independent artists and labels are trying to bring it back and get rid of that hip hop "yo yo homeboy" bullshit they try to call R&B now days🙂

As for new talent, I tip my hat to Alicia Keys. That lady's body may be young and pretty, but her Soul goes back several decades. Any song by her is fine by me.

nobody ever put more feeling in a song than Ray, Otis and Marvin. As a singer, it's incredible to me how Marvin would put such strain on his voice, pushing it beyond the limit with the screams and growls, and STILL be able to sing so sweetly with that gorgeous tone he could switch to. My all time favorite is Marvin's "Distant Lover" - hell, I'd have given him some if he sang that!!

"Night time is (The right time)" - Ray Charles
"Loving you too long" & "Cigarattes & Coffee" - Otis Redding
"Doggin Me Around" & "Workout" - Jackie Wilson
"Bring it On Home" & "Cupid" - Sam Cooke
"Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" & "Got that Feeling" - James Brown
"Call Me" & "Dr. Feelgood" - Aretha Franklin
"Shout", "Make Me Say it Again" & "Who's that Lady" - Isley Bros
"Just My Imagination" - Temptations
"Belle" & "Still In Love With You" - Al Green
"Brickhouse" - Commodores
"Let's Do it Again" & "I'll Take You There" - Staple Singers
"Don't Stop Till You get Enough" - Michael Jackson
"Neither One of Us" & " Makings of You" Gladys Knight
"One More Try" - George Michael
"Superstar" - Luther Vandross

God Bless Ray Charles. Rest In Peace, Brother Ray!
I'll second that, my man. The King of Soul!

And color me a sucker for anything by Louie Armstrong.

Carly Simon's rendition of "Let the River Run" is really uplifting, too. There's too many to mention, really! Yikes! This is one of those 'wish-list' threads that you can go on and on and on in... leave us not forget Isaac Hayes' "Love Gravy" (sorry, but somebody had to do it!)

ok, terorizer, you do realize that I am going to pester the daylights of you the next time I see you, right? do you do any Otis tunes?

Whatta ya say, Terry?

Wanna do the next Munch at a karaoke bar? I triple-dog darez ya! (and yes, you purists, I'm aware of my breech of etiquette by skipping straight to the triple, but I'd pay a dollar to hear Tero sing, dammit!)

I bet we've got some real life entertainers logging on to TMF, but they're incognito. I bet Eddie Murphy is a member... but soul singer... sorry, Eddie. "Party All The Time" is more like a novelty record to me. "My Girl", by The Temptations... Dit doo doo... dit doo doo... dit doo doo... dit doo doo... that bassline is the key that opens the door to one of the greatest SONGS, period, ever recorded!
