Hey all, Im not sure if there are any other sci-fi fans out there, but the channel just got changed, calling itself "syfy" apparently because the owner seems it is a better name, seeing as "science fiction is a GENRE not a NAME of a station" (not to mention the 'Food Network' and 'The Travel Channel' have been doing it since they came on TV). Ya, I know Im just a stick in the mud when it comes to changing stuff, but I for one think its just stupid. In fact, that station has been getting stupid for a while (e.g. putting pro wrestling on primetime, and playing 007 movies, which I do like, but it just ISN'T SCIFI dang it!).
It has been upseting me that they kept putting 'stop global warming' and 'save the plenet' commercials (which is actualy science fiction I guess, but anoying all the same) which I can put up with, but I haven't seen stargate sg1 (one of my favs there) for like a week and a half, and it seems like Im just not watching the station anymore. Anybody else feel the same, or dissagree?

Yes, it's been declining for a while, and while I won't go into a rant here about it, the management of that station has irked me as well. It seems they are purposely intent on snubbing their target audience, opting for trend-following instead.

I haven't tuned into Sci-Fi (or SyFy now) in months. The channel lost its appeal to me sometime ago, which is sad considering I'd been such an avid fan of the genre since I was a little kid. It was the programming that put me off. I never liked Galactica. I was a fan of the old show, and the new one was so bleak and dark it was off-putting for me. When the Stargates left, I left.

I couldn't understand their programming choices. Having a wrestling show and paranormal investigation shows when there are so many movies and TV shows begging to find a home indicated a direction for the network that didn't interest me.

Honestly, I can easily understand them wanting a name they can own, and I can't be mad that they aren't called "Sci-Fi" anymore. Every other genre network I've seen has a catchy title. Or at least a modestly clever one. But the way the place was run, that's what made me touch that dial.

I like the name change, given that there has always been damn little science fiction on the channel formerly known as SciFi, especially lately. It was always heavy on fantasy and horror (even reality-based horror like Psycho 😛inch🙂. And the rasslin' crap just emphasizes how removed they are from the science fiction genre. Bonus: we get to pronounce the new name as 'SeeFee', further severing all claims that low-rent channel has anything to do with science or real science fiction.

eh,they had some good movies on but I really didn't watch the channel all that much.Just watch what you want online then you can watch what you want when you want and not wait until it's on

I still watch it, and haven't noticed much, if any, change in overall programming since the name change.

Yeah, the wrestling shit is effin' stupid as all hell, along with the programming that doesn't really qualify as sci-fi. But still, they do have some god stuff. I generally watch it for the specail stuff, like the recent Twilight Zone marathon. I still get off on the Trek stuff they play regularly and they do have several Stargates going.

It's not that hard to write them if you're not happy with the programming. If enough people do, who knows? If nobody does, it'll be more of the same.

(By the way, Bella Donna...you didn't like the new BSG? I'm surprised. I found it to be the best, deepest and most human show on TV while it was on.)

Entirely fair, but I found it to be rambling and plotless. I can't say it struck me as terribly human. I've seen people in a crisis, and they tend to band together and try to make it through rather than fighting, squabbling, and trying to kill each other.

Besides, for 3 years we were promised that the Cylons had a plan. Liars! Liars all of them!

If they're still playing Twilight Zone marathons, then they can't be ALL bad. I've always felt that the channel had missed it's potential in alotta ways, but haven't had access for maybe five years, so don't really know much about how things are currently with them.

Science Fiction is a really broad spectrum of subjects, and I imagine it's hard to please all of the fans all of the time. In afew months, I may have access to a whole helluva lot more channels that I have been accustomed to. I'll be better able to weigh in on this then. "SyFy" really does sound pretty dumb, though...

I kinda get what QBB is getting at with just watching on the `puter, but not everyone has high-speed internet, and while I do, I prefer to see my movies and TV on the big 27" screen rather than my measly 19" monitor.

Sci-fi + Rock Monster = Not Effing Science Fiction a.k.a. EPIC PHAILYER

Have grown way distant from the Sci-Fi channel, so the name change is too late to disillusion me. I left the channel on good terms, with all the classic (not literally) films, the 12am-4am anime nights, and once-in-a-lifetime shows like "Head F**k" (no, I'm not being namby-pamby, the stars really are part of the title card).

SyFy is a bit silly and redundant to me, but it could have been way worse.

Oh ya, I dig the Twilight Zone marathon too. As strange as it may seem I never cared for Enterprise too much, but it never realy bothered me that it was on. And I HOPE they still keep sg1 at its normal time, it hasn't been on all week (Im jonesin!), and the last time I saw Atlantis (other than the one time showing list week) was at 1am on sat morning. Id be satisfied watching reruns on fri evening, but they...put on... NATIONAL TREASURE *ugg the headach is comming back*!
Anyway, I have sent a few emails to the station, and asked my friends to do the same. O well, I guess it gives me something to rant about lol.

Do,they still air Estate Of Panic?

I surely hope not. That show was utter crap. The only things that ever made SciFi worth watching:

-Stargate SG-1/Atlantis
-Eureka
-Ghost Hunters

I know what you're thinking. "But PurpleStyle! Ghost Hunters? You're an atheist! You don't believe in that mumbo jumbo!"

Well, if you think that... then you're right. Ghosts are pure speculative nonsense. In fact, the pseudo-science they employ, along with the lack of really understanding their own equipment, is what makes the show. You've got some plumbers-by-day and their college-level cohorts wandering around in the dark with equipment to measure electromagnetic radiation. Enough said.

The rest makes no sense. Wrestling, anime, - what does that have to do with SCIENCE FICTION? I guess that's where the ridiculous name change comes in: So they can justify playing cartoons and men in spandex hugging and grabbing inappropriately.

I loved Estate Of Panic I wanted to be on that show so bad.I was wishing I lived in California even more lol

I hate the "SyFy" name. Like they wanna distance themselves from the genre. The logo is ultra-corporate, trendy ipod-ish crap...It's a sure sign they're gonna go downhill real fast.

WHY did they change the name? Are they going to fool anyone? Bring in a "broader audience"??? (That's why they show wrestling, but none of their broader demographic ever tunes in the sci-fi shows)

Oh, and BSG is the best show EVER!!! But I agree with Bella- the Cylons never had a coherent plan. I laughed every time they argued about "the Plan" on the show- Ummmm.. let's see...

1- Wipe out humanity
2- Replace humanity on the irradiated colony planets
3- try to breed with the humans for some reason while hunting them all down
4- Stop doing all that and "shepherd" the human's new colony by brute force
5- Try to keep "the Final Five" a secret, but no one knows the reason why
6- the Quantum Leap Cylon had them all hoodwinked all along, and they STILL argue about "the Plan" !!!!
