teacher sues over 1st amendment

Seventh grade social studies teacher Gary Cole of Skyway Middle School has sued his school district for violating his First Admendment right of free expression. According to the newly created curriculum he can only teach the history of Christian civilizations. “He can’t even teach the history of anti-Semitism (or the) history of ancient Greece,” Cole’s lawyer said. When straying form the curriculum Cole has been reprimanded and threatened with the loss of his job




Is this why, in the school district I went to, all we learned about was the civil war and the revolution?

A proper curriculum only defines what really MUST be taught, not any restrictions about other topics. How can a student understand the true nature of democracy without explanation of its very roots in ancient Athens? How can students be taught tolerance about other ethnic groups or religions if those mustn't be mentioned? And history which is important for the States also happened elsewhere in the world. A curriculum like this leads to ignorance and intolerance of the next generation to form the States. And it is bordering on mind control and nationalistic indoctrination.
