New York City was number 5 on the list of ten most stressful American Cities. (see list below)

Here was the description for NYC:

New York, NY
Beginning and ending their days with the longest commute in the country, the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple can really stress people out. Unemployment is high and so is violent crime, which may explain why New Yorkers spend many of their days experiencing stress, depression, and problems with emotions. But New Yorkers are not quitters—the suicide rate is one of the lowest.

The whole list, compiled by researchers at Spirlings's Best Places:

Top 10 Most Stressful Cities
Tacoma, WA
Miami, FL
New Orleans, LA
Las Vegas, NV
New York, NY
Portland-Vancouver, OR-WA
Mobile, AL
Stockton-Lodi, CA
Detroit, MI
Dallas, TX

Here's what they had to say about Tacoma, the most stressful city:

Top Five Stressful Cities
Tacoma, WA
Tacoma residents contend with one of the highest divorce rates in the country, as well as one of the highest unemployment rates. It's cloudy in Tacoma much of the time, and the suicide and property crime rates are high. On a brighter note, Tacomans can feel safe from bodily harm thanks to the low violent crime rate.

I can definitely see how Miami can be up there. That city should be put under the martial law. Voilent crimes are right up there. I know first hand.

Mobile, AL? That city looks really out of place, considering its population is much lower than the others, and it's the only Southeastern city (South Florida is really a culture unto itself and can't really be considered part of the Southeast). I wonder why Mobile is on that list....

MrMacphisto took the words out of my mouth.

Even the weather there is highly predictable. People in Mobile can almost set their clocks by the spring rains from 11:15 until 11:49 a.m. each morning.

I can't envision Mobile as a high stress city.

YAY!!

dallas texas is last on the list!!! 'bout time we were last somewhere. we already have crappy cops and tons of drugs floating around. new yorkers, i apologize.

Maybe Tacoma has a lower crime rate because they commit suicide rather than homicide.

Button 😛

Okay, now I wonder what's considered the LEAST stressful city to live in. I think I'd like to eventually retire and wind up there. Then again, maybe I'd want to avoid it for fear of dying from being bored.

Here's a bigger list of cities. Looks like you want to retire to Albany.

Damn... Charlotte is up there... and to think I wanted to move there soon... maybe not then.. although Raleigh looks good at 91. I suppose they don't measure anything relating to traffic, because Raleigh has the worst traffic for its size I've seen ANYWHERE.
