Today marks the 68th anniversary of D-Day. Today, 68 years ago our grandfathers and for some of you, great grandfathers, hit the beaches of Normandy to start running Hitler's forces back inside Germany. Thanks to all of those who fought and died.

This picture of the Blue Angels is for them. It's the best pic I can offer.

Would be better if you had a pic with the flags of all the nations involved in D-Day. 🙂

Nah. He's American. Show your own patriotism and post a Union Flag. 😉

Today my hat's off to my late grandfathers, both of them veterans of that war. I can't argue with anyone who says that was the greatest generation.

Thanks Bella, and Gladius for responding. If I had a pic of the Allied country's flag I would have put it up. I don't happen to have a picture of all three of them together.

Countries aside, all of them should be saluted!!

Thanks for starting the thread, Hootus. We all need to remember, without that generations fortitude, we'd all be speaking German!! No offense meant to anyone. Way to go!!!
PS, there were more than 3 allied countries, but that's beside the point. lol THANKS AGAIN!!!

Well, I can't quite since none of my great-grandparents/grandparents were at Normandy, but I can tally-ho for my Great-grandad, who in his youth fought the Japanese in Burma. I daresay the Royal Artillery's motto (his unit during his service), could be rightfully applied to all soldiers, wherever they were, and whoever they were;

"Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt!"

The Blues permanent station is right here in Pensacola, Florida, where I live. 😛atriot:

To Galdius, Yes it can. I feel for your great grand dad. Burma was nasty business!

To Rick, Been to Pensacola. It is cool to see the Blues represented so well. Even on the sides of the bridges and overpasses!

I tried to jog the memory of this momentous day in a girl whose brother is a Royal Marine, but to no avail. What kind of generation is hers compared to the British, American and commonwealth troops that went into battle on the Western front?

One side of the family were not involved in combat, as they were farmers, but on the other side, three great uncles served with the RAF. My grandfather was too young to have fought.

My utmost respects to my grandfather (who celebrated his 89th birthday this year)! He was a bazooka-infantry man and participated in the D-Day Invasion (he took out an entire machine gun emplacement but sadly was injured by a bullet through the cheek and shrapnel through his foot). He also had the fortune of meeting Patton in the hospital he was recovering at during the final stages of the war. Patton joked around with him for a bit and then continued meeting the other injured men. I also give my utmost respects to my cousin Conner (who served in Iraq like so many others and also like so many others he never made it home).

for what's worth - my Dad was on a Motor Torpedeo Boat with the Canadian Navy - rear guard to the Allied landings that day.
