Hi, folks. I'd like to try something a little different. Whenever someone complains about a pro wrestling angle, even if the criticism is justified, I wonder if the critic could do better. Well, this thread is designed for that purpose.
In my case, I chose Starrcade 1997 as the kick-off point. Let's say that the event itself happened exactly the way it did. I still think it could have been salvagable.
The following night on Nitro, the nWo comes out in force. Eric Bischoff demands that WCW commissioner JJ Dillon undo the "injustice" of the night before, since Hogan would have beaten Sting fair and square if not for Bret Hart sticking his nose into it. Bischoff would then make a shocking accusation: that Bret had gone psycho from being screwed and was now a vigilante, dishing out screwjobs to anyone he thought deserved it.
Dillon enters and shoots down the nWo, announcing that Sting is the rightful champion, and that he really doesn't care what Bret's motives are, because the nWo finally got a taste of its own medicine after a year-and-a-half of dirty tricks. Bischoff counters that if Dillon doesn't change his mind, the nWo will go on a reign of terror that would make their 1996 antics look like a picnic.
Scott Hall steps up, reminding everyone that he has a title shot coming. "Yo, Hollywood! Me an' Big Kev...we got this Sting thing handled. But Bret Hart's gotta go."
Hogan grins. "Well, ya know, Scott Hall? I'm not too worried about Sting, since we know I can beat him. But Bret Hart, you an' me got unfinished business, brother. Until you get enough guts to try and stab me in the front and not the back, you and everybody else in WCW is wearin' a bull's-eye, and it's your fault."
With this one move, three major things are accomplished:
1) A series of matches between Hogan and Bret is set up, with a HUGE box-office potential.
2) Sting is established as a fighting champion, leading WCW against the nWo army, even if he has to do it alone.
3) The nWo is revitalized and becomes an active threat again.
Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Reactions? Threats? Lemon cookies?
