The Day After Tomorrow

Al Gore's about as obsessed with the environment as Jim Blast is obsessed with Libera

LOL Knox! Um....are you a pinko commie liberal? Just kidding dude....some of my best friends are scum sucking pinko liberal morons....but hey, we're still friends! Actually, (probably like you) I'm very much a moderate. I don't like extremists on either side. I'm as against the religeous right as I am the secularists. All I'm wanting to know is if Hollywood will EVER put out a film that's NOT designed to further their liberal political agenda? Pearl Harbor....Jimmy Doolittle portrayed by Screaming Liberal Alec Baldwin? Independence Day had it's lib moments too, and does Will Smith HAVE to be in EVERY action film? From reruns of The Wild Wild West....somehow Will doesn't remotely resemble James West. Is it just me? Oh, and as for Independence Day, how many fighter pilots going through any of the three academies talk gangsta' like Will Smith did? Puleeeeze! For once I agree with Bill Cosby. It's so about time someone whose an icon in his culture stood up and said something about just talking normally, G Money! LOL

lol...uuuuummm....yes. to pretty much every comment, lol. i haven't checked back here since i posted, so let me just respond to some of the main ideas...

there a phantom of the opera movie coming out?!?!? aw man, gotta see it, awwww man!!!

yes, what u see is what u get in the previews- im the type who LIKES big budget special effects, so i reeeeeally liked it- not so much the story line...i mean, yes, im proud of them that there is a story line and all, unlike some other disaster movies...but it's true, it's not beleivable. everything was over-dramatized and (SCENE SPOILER, STOP READING IF U HAVEN"T SEEN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) when the 'frost' was chasing him i mean....ok, no, that's not real, that can NOT happen, u can not outrun air!!! So yeah, i totally agree w/ mostly what was said about it- im too tired to respond to every little thing and frankly, i dont wanna bore anyone, lol 😉 So yes, let me repeat: (OK, IF U HAVEN'T SEEN IT U CAN START READING AGAIN!) that this is a really good movie if ur like me and can be taken away w/ a scene- hollywood special effects are awsome- i love a good plot as much as the next person, but that's not what i went to see this for, ya know? So yeah, i still reccomend it, i think it's a good -insert movie ticket amount here- bucks on a friday night 😉

I absolutely refused to see 'Pearl Harbor'. They changed Navy history to suit the film and put some politically correct horseshit that had no place in the film. You wanna see a movie about Pearl? Rent 'Tora Tora Tora'. That one will tell you all you need to know, not some Disney rubbish...most of what Disney makes IS rubbish.
I'm sick and tired of seeing New York get hammered for Summer blockbuster jollies. I watched the buildings come down in clear view of my office building penthouse windows on September 11th, and that's that.
I like intelligent films with adult plots. I don't really go for rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air, action films and the like. If I'm addicted to anything like that at all, I do love a good car chase, and I would watch 'The French Connection' for the thirty second time just to catch the car chase again, but the truth is, movies like 'The Day After Tomorrow' make me sigh with impatience.
I like matching the right actor with the right role, regardless of political views, but I just don't like Alec Baldwin. Not my favorite guy. I once saw him yelling and screaming on Letterman (or Leno?) about killing people who disagreed with him politically, and I figured he was no better than the Ignorentsia that infest the rest of this country.
Speaking of actors: When I was in New York recently, I saw Christopher Walken near the Herald Square area. I admire his honesty in not going to a plastic surgeon; offering the natural look, but I'm telling you, he resembles that stretch of Route 1 in Newark and Elizabeth. Not good 🙁

We just came in from seeing "The Day After Tomorrow", not bad, definetley a movie worth checking out on the big screen for the special effects.
As far as Dennis Quaid's acting, about the same as Bill Paxton's in "Twister" or Tommy Lee Jones in "Volcano" or Pierce Bronson in "Dantes Peak". These are the same characters, anyway.
I'd rate "Day" a six out of 10, it certainly wasn't boring(i.e. "Matrix Reloaded"), I wasn't looking at my watch every ten minutes.
I docked it a few points for the typical "disaster movie" situations and sub-plotlines, which are rehashed over and over(see above movies for what I'm talking about).
And I'm the only one out here who hates the phrase: "popcorn movie"?

Believe it or not, I once worked for a motorhome rental agency right on Route 1 & 9 in Linden, NJ(7 miles south of Newark Int'l Airport). I know exactly where and what you are talking about! All I can say is that it is great to be back in San Diego!

"Popcorn Movie" is a term the film industry uses to sell a movie.
It's right up there with:

"A non-stop rollercoaster ride!"

or when you hear a tv show is a "must-see" or a "water cooler show".
Seinfeld goofed on this last term:

"Water cooler show?" "Why call it that?"
"Cause people gather at the water cooler the next day to talk about it".
"Well, shouldn't they call it a coffee maker show instead?"

Drew.....hijacking my own post.

Popcorn Movie, definition: A movie that, at some point unique to the individual viewer, cause the rational part of the brain to usurp control of the body from the rest of the mind, walk out to the snack stand and purchase a large tub of popcorn. This is not, as most asume, because of an overwhelming need for overpriced snacky goodness but a desperate attempt to kill the body and end the suffering by choking on a particularly large kernel. It is for this reason that most cinema snack stands encourage patrons to buy buttered popcorn while viewing a movie.

The Southern Hemisphere was spared of ice (including Argentina) because they're more liberal down there and they have rain forests.

Obviously, you don't know much about geography. Much of the Southern Hemisphere is made up of Third World nations, many of which are more conservative than we are in the sense that personal freedoms aren't as prevalent. We actually live in a pretty liberal country compared to them, considering we have so many freedoms.

Anyway, yeah, this movie was crap, but so was Independence Day. These kind of movies are all style and no substance. What I'd give for another Lost in Translation or Road to Perdition....

As for the politics of the movie, The Day After Tomorrow successfully belittles the environmental movement by coming up with such a stupid scenario. The real political issues concerning the environment are far more subtle and require more research to understand them. It's not as simple as observing an upcoming "natural disaster." The real environmental concerns are the millions of tons of human waste that are dumped into the ocean every year by humanity or the massive air pollution problem that so many of our power plants present. The point of the environmental movement is to prevent things from reaching a natural disaster level, but even if they did reach that level, it would be more of a gradual process. Take, for example, the growing ozone hole over Antarctica: it would take centuries of unrestrained or increasing pollution to totally eliminate our ozone layer, but the point of decreasing the hole is to keep things from worsening. Unfortunately, humans are a crisis-oriented species that tend to wait till the last minute to accomplish anything, so movies like this one attempt to appeal to the average citizen concerning environmental issues by presenting an "oh shit, it's too late" situation. Unfortunately, they almost always fall flat on their faces because the science is sacrificed for the sake of dramatic purposes. Of course, try educating people about the real science of these things. You'll probably find that most people are either too stupid or too apathetic to understand what the collective effects of their negligent lifestyles do to the world.

'Obviously, you don't know much about geography. '

Excuse me MacFisto....I was busy eating my MacCheeseburger and throwing my styrofoam container into the pristine Arctic Ocean while spraying my aerosol can into the atmosphere in hopes of making things a little warmer around here. In terms of Argentina and third world countries, they're too ignorant to be either conservative or liberal, they just sort of like to shoot one another or blow folks up. My geography is fairly well in tact as I was JOKING about Argentina being liberal. Just want to make the clarification. But thank you for the geography, political, and environmental lessons. I'll certainly keep it all in mind. For now, I have to run. I'm learning how to steer a supertanker near the Alaskan coastline while making a Martini at the same time. We have a load of hazardous waste here I need to dump on Anwar since we can't drill for oil there. I figure radioactive waste with a shelf life of about 10,000 years ought to make those Reindeer grow a little bigger so we can shoot them and feed them to the starving Sierra Club. I hate to see that contingent of people abuse and kill all those plants and vegetables just to eat. Not only do they chop them up, they boil them too! It's an outrage! Oh, I'm watching the movie here on the ship which is much better than watching where I'm going, then again, maybe I'll view it 'the day after tomorrow'. After all, I see a baby seal out there swimming around...if I time this turn just right I can watch it come out of the propwash as chum, but it takes so long to turn these damn things and those stupid ice bergs get in the way. Damn! I'm reading Al Gore's book about how human waste is actually great for fertilizer, I think I'll go out on deck and 'heave a Havanna' into the ocean just to help out the marine ecosystem. I couldn't find any biodegradable toilet paper so in the name of conservation, I'm going to use some introductory pages from Al's book (hmmmm....how many trees were pulverized to make this very well written work of art?). I'm doing MY part for the environment, how about you? Huh? Huh? LOL!

Heh heh... You really like sarcasm, eh? To steal a phrase from a favorite book of mine: "Sarcasm is a scalpel, not a bludgeon." Your rant was humorous though: it reminds me of Denis Leary.

Anyway, I seriously hope that your view of South America is a little more educated than that. While I see that the swarming masses of Catholics down there have a strange brand of religion indeed and the governments of that continent are steeped in corruption, they aren't always shooting each other or blowing people up. I think you got them confused with the Middle East or perhaps, our military. There is quite a lot of shooting and bombing going on in Columbia, however. You can thank the CIA and the futile War on Drugs for that.
