Here's my idea for a test of determination using tickling as the functional mechanics. I thought of this a few years ago while pondering a story but have never had occasion to try it out. Maybe some of you psychologists out there can tell me if it's valid.
You need two people: one is the subject testing their determination to accomplish some stated goal. The other is the tickler who facilitates the test.
The subject lies down on his or her back and holds two straws (or some other longish, flexible objects), one in each hand between forefingers and thumbs and holds the tips of the straws together, pointing at each other. The arms are held above the head ( in the position many bound lees find themselves). The subject then visualizes the goal and the act of accomplishment while holding the straws together end-to-end while the facilitator tickles the subject's bare belly (or wherever the best spot is found).
If the subject can keep his/her arms above the head and the straws in contact for 120 seconds, then that represents some serious determination given the natural reflext to protect your belly when someone is tickling.
What do you think of that? Anyone want to try it out?
