The German/French/Russians Are Rotten....

The following is a chapter from one of my favorite books: "All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum. It was written with a focus on Russians (since our political beef was with them at the time the story was written), but it can be applied to ANY race/nationality/country/culture in the world. Please read and consider the point of the story, and let the moral simmer in your mind the next time you feel the urge to bash other countries.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Russians (Germans/French/Americans) are a rotten lot. Immoral, aggressive, ruthless, coarse, and generally evil. They are responsible for most of the troubles in this world. They are not like us.
That's pretty much the summary of the daily news about the Russians (Germans/French/Americans). But sometimes something slips through the net of prejudice, some small bit of a sign that is so clean and true and real that it wedges open the rusting Iron Curtain long enough for us to see not an enemy but fellow travelers, joined to us by membership in the Fellowship of Joy-and-Pain.
See Nicolai Pestretsov. I don't know much about him. I don't know where he is now. But I will tell you what I do know.
He was a sergeant major in the Russian army, 36 years old. He was stationed in Angola, a long way from home. His wife had come out to visit him.
On August 24th, South African military units entered Angola in an offensive against the black nationalist guerrillas taking sanctuary there. At the village of N-Giva, they encountered a group of Russian soldiers. Four were killed and the rest of the Russians fled - except for Sergeant Major Nicolia Pestretsov. He was captured, as we know, because the South African military communique said: "Sgt. Major Nicolai Pestretsov refused to leave the body of his slain wife, who was killed in the assault on the village."
It was as if the South Africans could not believe it, for the communique repeated the information. "He went to the body of his wife and would not leave it, although she was dead."
How strange. Why didn't he run and save his own hide? What made him go back? Is it possible that he loved her? Is it possible that he wanted to hold her in his arms one last time? Is it possible that he needed to cry and grieve? Is it possible that he felt the stupidity of war? Is it possible that he felt the injustice of fate? Is it possible that he thought of children, born or unborn? Is it possible that he didn't care what became of him now?
It's possible. We don't know. Or at least we don't know for certain. But we can guess. His actions answer.
And so he sits alone in a South African prison. Not a "Russian" (German, Frenchman, American) or "Communist" or "soldier" or "enemy" or any of those catagories. Just-a-man who cared for just-a-woman for just-a-time more than anything else.
Here's to you, Nicolai Pestretsov, wherever you may go and be, for giving powerful meaning to the promises that are the same everywhere; for dignifying that covenant that is the same in any language - "for better or for worse, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love and honor and cherish unto death, so help me God." You kept the faith; kept it bright - kept it shining. Bless you!
(Oh, the Russians are a rotten lot, immoral, aggressive, ruthless, coarse, and generally evil. They are responsible for most of the troubles of this world. They are not like us.)
Sure.
It's been...
It's been my experience that most people are okay, taken one at a time. BUT, when placed in situations of extreme privilege and/or power, they can morph into %^$#@!*(# fairly quickly. There are good Americans/Russians/Germans/Iraqis...and perhaps even a few good Frenchmen (haven't met one myself, but in accordance with scientific integrity I allow the possibility...lol), but we seem to have reached a point in history where accountability is high, due to better communications and overall penetration of even formerly closed societies. Actions speak loudly and clearly.... Q
Hmmmmm.....don't over-analyze it, Q dear. It was supposed to be a feel good thread. A reflection on how deep inside, we're virtually all the same, and unyieling hatred and aggression is kind of pointless. Now go to the corner and think about the moral! 😛 😛 😛
If only more of us would understand what Mimi is saying.
I have a proposal for all those war-mongering politicians:
Before going to war against any nation, they should be forced to spend at least 8 hours with the grandchildren of the "enemy politician". Afterwards they can blast the hell out of each other if they want to.
Thanks for posting that great story, Mimi! We should judge other people as individuals, regardless of where they come from. 🙂
Of course it's possible, with all those American G.I.'s over there the past hundred years, going to pull their fat outta the fire whenever Germany gets a little squirrelly. Goes without saying that our boys left some good ol' Yankee genetic contributions! Hee!
robert fulgem is a great story teller yes..but Im praying ur smart enough to know that he is just that. U can think about his truth in the abastract but in reality he is a hack....please do some research before u quote a moron...thanks
Willustop2001, why do you think Robert Fulghum is a moronic hack? Surely you're not saying that just because you seem to disagree with him? And what's the point of digging up a thread that's almost three years old if all you're going to do is complain about it?
Oh no! I forgot to do my research, and look what happened!
Is there a statue of limitations that says a thread is too old to submit a response? News to me.
Are you serious?! You dug up this thread from nearly 3 years ago to basically tell me I had no business quoting an author you don't like?? :wow: :wow: :wow:
Just when I thought I've seen it all on this forum.
I'm intelligent enough to know that Robert is an entertaining author, who writes inspiring, often funny, feel good little stories that more often than not make ME take a step back and realize how ridiculous and warped my point of view can become on certain things around me with the aid of the media, others opinions, and ignorance. Anything beyond that, I honestly don't care. He makes ME feel good when I read some of his stuff, and that alone justifies my decision to both read his books, and quote him here. If you don't like him, I'm sorry. But surely don't think that gives you the right to more or less tell me I'm uneducated simply because I do and wanted to share something I found to be touching with others on the forum.
Never seems to take me long to lose a good mood when I log into this place some days.
Mimi :sowrong:
P.S. And how the hell can ANYONE develop a beef with Alex, who has got to be THE most unconfrontational and friendly person on the forum? Talk about seeing at someone in a new light!
