Princess Clíona took Tine Dearg into the room where the armor was kept. He touched its shoulders as she instructed and immediately it was on him, expanding to fit his body perfectly, even widening along where his iron cuffs were. To their equal relief, it didn’t change his voice. Nodding with approval, she turned to go, when he once again grabbed her by the wrist, pulling her to him, “Just because you must pretend to enjoy these petty social events doesn’t mean you have to pretend to have a good time with me tonight. Why not allow yourself to actually enjoy it?”, he raised the visor of the helmet and looked down at her with wicked eyes, “I have been many things in the thousands of years I’ve walked the earth, but boring has never been something I’ve ever been accused of.”, then grasping her closer, he dug his fingers into her sides viciously, the armor giving way so that it was supple and felt like it was barely there against her body. She fought the urge to squeal and struggled with her lips to keep them from going up into a smile. “Hmmm….”, Tine Dearg smirked, “I think tonight will be quite the match of wills. But I should warn you, my princess that I do not give up easily.” He added as his fingers dug into her rib cage more deviously while his other took her hand and led her in a dance about the room, “You will laugh for me before you leave this room. And you will laugh with me throughout the night, my princess.”, he grinned down at her as he continued twirling with her around the furniture, his fingers pressing deeply along her ribs until despite fighting as hard as she could, she burst out laughing in his arms, having to rely on him to keep from falling down. The dragon’s smile widened, “That’s much better. See, you are relying on me already, princess.”, and winking at her, twirled her one last time before letting her go.

Blushing crimson, she ran giggling out of the room.

Clíona of Carrigcleena stepped out of the shadows and gave him a hug, “That was simply perfection. You are already making her interested for the first time.”

“I should hope so. For I’d love the chance to spend more time with her in the years ahead. Our king will be quite smitten with her.”

The princess entered the ballroom, a radiant smile on her face which only those closest to her would know was faked. To the majority of the attendees, she seemed as if there was no other place she’d rather be.

She took her time dancing with each of the suitors, gazing up at them with eyes that seemed totally enraptured. Little did any of them know she wasn’t seeing their faces, and was rather just replaying her various adventures with her father, the knights and her own time as the Golden Knight…anything to keep her gaze happy and bright.

“She’s good. She’s really good at faking.”, Tine Dearg muttered into Clíona of Carrigcleena’s ear.

“That, and it’s an easy thing to fool imbeciles.”, the fairy queen answered, her courtly smile never once leaving her face as her eyes darted about the room with disdain.

When it came time for his turn, Tine Dearg stepped forward and was greeted by the princess’ standard look of enraptured eyes and sheer delight. Immediately, he pulled her into his arms and began to whirl her about the dance floor, his voice deep and teasing against her ear so only she could hear, “Don’t try any of those fake expressions with me, princess. I know the difference between your placating and your joyous laughter.”, and with that, he began to dance his fingers furiously across her waist as he spun her around, teasing her armpits as he lifted her and her stomach as he pulled her back towards him. Soon, she was giggling up a storm, seeming in the eyes of all attendees to simply be deliriously happy in the arms of the Golden Knight. “Promise me something, princess, “, he whispered to her as they continued their dance, “Promise me you will never marry a man that doesn’t make you feel like this.”

Princess Clíona laughed at his request, “Then I would have to promise to only marry a dragon, dear sir. I don’t think my court would approve of such a decision.”

“What if he were royalty to match your own?”, he twirled her again, looking for all the world like a perfect dance move executed smoothly leading her out and then pulling her back towards him, taking her by the waist, but secretly teasing her bellybutton so that she let out a squeal and fell apart giggling in his arms, “I can think of one who would very much like a princess like you.”

“He’d have to catch me first, and before I caught him.”, she winked back up at him as they danced seamlessly into the next song.

Tine Dearg laughed, “We could practice, you know? You and I could try it out as a game of chase on your next hunt. Or we could try it out tonight after you put the rest of these courtiers to sleep again.”

Clíona winced. She’d forgotten that the sleeping draught didn’t work on dragons.

Seeing her expression, Tine Dearg chuckled, “You forgot didn’t you? Afraid you’re stuck with me tonight, princess.”, then tickling her a little more viciously added, “I look forward to playing without the social constraints of this ball…perhaps a game of chase then?”

Blushing, Princess Clíona nodded between her giddy laughter, and for the first time, her eyes sparkled in anticipation rather than recollecting a memory.

True to form, the suitors all dozed off, and the princess began tiptoeing out of the great hall towards her stables. Her page waited there with her horse saddled and ready to go. Jumping on it, she took off, the wind in her hair, feeling thrilled with the prospect of being free, at least for a little while.

Then, reaching the foothills where the forest began, she raced up into it, embracing with happiness the place where most feared to tread. The fireflies were the first to greet her, and she let her horse graze in a clearing before dancing among them.

“You are so beautiful when you’re fearless, but even more so when lit up like a firefly.”, an amused voice came out of the forest shadows.

Turning, the princess came face to face with Tine Dearg, who now, free of the armor, stood in full courtly attire. His garments sported the signal of the Dragons, his eyes glowing red in the dim moonlight, his long hair blowing behind him. He took her breath away as he leaned lazily against a tree, staring at her, a playful smile about his face, “Don’t tell me you forgot our little game tonight.”, he wiggled his brows up and down.

Blushing so profusely she was grateful for the dark light, lest he notice, the princess stopped twirling and turned with a prim look on her face, “I am afraid you misunderstood. I am out for my evening ride, nothing more.”

“I see”, Tine Dearg nodded sagely, “and what would the point of such an evening ride be, my princess?”

Annoyed that he insisted on conversing, she smiled politely as she backed closer to her horse, “To run and dance free with the creatures of the night. They simply thrill my soul. I know that makes little sense, so please don’t ask any more questions. I’ll see you in court in the morning.”, she turned her back to him, about to mount her horse when he was suddenly beside her.

“Ah, but I do understand, princess, for dragons are creatures of the night.”, he gently, but firmly took the reins from her, letting them drop beside the horse, then walking towards her, with a playfully predatorial look across his face added, “And as we have danced, let’s try running, shall we?”.

In a flash he pounced on her and began tickling her sides and stomach making her laugh and squirm under his hands, “Tell me the truth. Did you not have fun dancing with me tonight?”

Laughing, she shook her head and tried to push him away.

He only dug in harder, teasing her armpits and squeezing her hips, “Very well then. Did you not have the most fun you have ever had in your adult life across the dance floor of your castle ballroom tonight?”

Now with tears flowing down her face, she nodded, squealing out the answer, “Yeeeheeheeeheeeheees!”

Tine Dearg sat back on his knees, smirking down at her, “That’s what I thought.”, then grabbing her around her waist, rolled them both across the grass and down a short hill making her laugh again and landing together in the soft grass. Reaching up to remove grass and leaves from her hair, he looked into her eyes and gently cupped her face, “Then take a chance. Be brave. Be courageous in a whole new way. There is someone out there that could make you feel this way every day. Don’t settle. By the gods, don’t you dare settle or I shall have to kidnap you myself and torture sense into you.”, he tickled her stomach and squeezed her knees, making her squeal with giggles again, then added, “But don’t turn yourself away from love either. Your lives are so short. But they all have the potential to burn bright.”, he reached out and snatched a lightening bug, gently opening it up in his palm and urging it into hers.

The princess exclaimed in wonder at the tiny creature, and in that moment, Tine Dearg decided he would do whatever he had to do to get his king to meet the woman who caught dragons.

*************************************************************************************************

The following weeks continued, falling into a kind of routine. But those who knew the princess well noticed a gaiety in her step. She seemed to allow herself to enjoy things as she hadn’t before. Each day she rode in the hunt with the knights, the Golden Knight among them. Each night after the regular courtly meals, she would help the page to feed the dragons, dismissing him and enjoying their company. The fairy queen would spellbound the dungeon as she left, insuring no noise would rise from it and all others would forget to think upon them or the princess during those hours.

Had anyone heard what was talked about down there, they would have been shocked to see the dragons let out of their cells, eating in a circle with the princess, taking turns teasing, dancing and tickling her. Tine Dearg and the princess amused the dragons by impersonating the many awkward moments between Princess Clíona and her suitors.

Finally, one night, when she was happily curled up in the laps of two dragons, she spoke softly with a look of seriousness on her face, “You have all been so good to me despite my locking you up. I have decided to take my advisors’ advice and send Tine Dearg to begin negotiations with your king in your behalf. Hopefully, if all goes well, you will be free next month.”

There was a pause as they all saw how the thought of being without their company would leave the princess alone in a castle full of those who would never understand her.

Then Leannán Dóiteáin turned his eyes towards her, “That is all fine and well my princess, but you are sorely mistaken if you think you can get rid of us that easily.”, and in seconds had begun to tickle her into tears of breathless laughter, his claw-like nails tantalizing her skin. The others joined in attacking limbs, feet, stomach and sides alike, teasing her with clever professions of agreement.

*************************************************************************************************

Tine Dearg felt tears in his eyes as he looked down at the princess, sad to be leaving her for what he hoped would not be too long.

Clíona reached up and kissed him on the nose, wrapping her arms around his neck, “I’d ask you to come back. But I wouldn’t deny you your freedom.”

“Oh, I’ll come back, princess, and hopefully when you least expect it!”, he flirted with her, gratified to see her cheeks turn crimson before kissing her back on her cheeks and turning to leave, followed by the page, both on horseback.

Once out of sight the page turned into the fairy queen, Clíona of Carrigcleena, who sighed, “This will take waaay too long.” and with the wave of her hand, created a tear in the space before them, revealing a portal into the Dragon King’s lair, his castle rising high in front of them.

Then walking through it, towards the doors of the castle, she turned back into the page and rang the great bell by pulling a rope beside the doors.

To their surprise, a voice greeted them from behind as a whoosh of wings came down from overhead. The dragon looked down upon them from a pair of great blue eyes, “Do me the respect of being in your natural form, Clíona.”, he breathed, his head dipping down with his mane falling about his head and neck in swirls of thick blue hair. He playfully nudged the page with the side of his face, making her fall into Tine Dearg’s arms where she reverted back to her regular form, “Bet you feel better now, don’t you?”, he grinned, then leaned down to her, “How about a kiss, my beauty?”

The fairy queen obliged and made the king chuckle as he pushed the great doors to his castle inwards, revealing the mouth of a giant cave. “Come on in.”, he called after himself, adding, “Clíona, give Tine Dearg the key to his cuffs. Tine Dearg, close the door after us.”

Clíona couldn’t help but to be impressed by his knowing she had the key. Unlocking Tine Dearg, she waited for him to stretch and turned to pull the doors closed. He walked beside her, following the giant blue pearlescent tail in front of them into an even greater chamber.

“Tine Dearg, why are you still in human form? Surely you are eager to turn back into your glorious self?”, the Dragon King leaned back and asked, his large blue eyes looking down at him.

Tine Dearg smiled, “I’ve been offered an ambassadorial post in Princess Clíona’s court, sire. I figured it best to remain as she’d have to kiss me again for me to turn back.”

The Dragon King smiled, “And that would be bad because…?”

Tine Dearg laughed, “Because I do not think terrorizing her kingdom would be conducive to ambassadorial relations should you agree to her terms.”

“How very inteeeeeresting.”, he teased them, opening a large claw, “Give me her terms.”

The fairy queen stepped forward and handed him the scroll.

The Dragon King flicked the seal off with the tip of a claw and read through the papers, “Hmmmm. It says here she sent her page. I take it she does not know you are her page?”

“That would be correct.”, she answered cautiously.

“And I know from the stories told that you fetched the Golden Knight who defeated Tine Dearg.”, he looked up, eyes full of cunning.

“That is also correct.”

“Why?”

“He was upsetting the balance.”

“Right answer. Poor liar.”, the dragon king took a breath, about to burn the parchment, then paused, “You fae are forever busy at mischief. I think I’ll sign this just to figure out what you are lying about.” He turned, blowing his fiery breath against nearby rock, then touching the tip of a claw into the soot, used it to sign the document, handing it back to them, “Your secret is safe with me, Clíona. You know how I do love your little diversions.”, he winked down at her, his thick lashes longer than the height of her body, then turning towards Tine Dearg added, “You are lucky the princess had the Golden Knight capture you and prevent you from doing worse harm to the village. I would have had to kill you, and you have always been a loyal favorite, Tine Dearg. I am glad this honor has been offered to you. Tell your brothers I expect them to return post haste and report.”

Bowing, Tine Dearg and Clíona turned to walk out, signed document in hand. Then just before they reached the gate, they heard him call out after them, “Make it clear that this agreement pertains only to her and her court. The Golden Knight is a loner and therefore mine to deal with as is warranted.”

Sharing a secret smile, the fairy queen and dragon exited the giant doors, heading back to the princess.
