I just have to say that this movie scared me half to DEATH, best time I've had at a horror flick in years 😱 :shake:

Anybody else seen it yet?

Bella

I saw it today actually. I thought it was good.

I wish they made the flashbacks in the movie look better, like they really were flashbacks and not another part in the movie. (Does that make sense?)

Thanks for the thumbs-up on that'n, Bella! Out of a half-dozen trailers seen recently, that's the only one that had me the least bit intrigued. I intend on seeing it soon.

Yeah i'll prob watch it was well. But i will prob wait for it to come out onto Dvd since i always say i'm gonna go see this movie or that movie in theaters when it comes out. But then i never do

This is one that I think should be seen in the theatre; it might lose a lil' oomph on the smaller screen. My best friend and I already swore we're seeing it again the miute it hits the local $1.50 theater in a few months 😎

Nope, haven't seen it yet...

But there's nothing like taking a gal to a scary movie! Especially a ticklish one, LOL Jump into my arms and I'll save you from the monster, baby. (out of the frying pan, into the fire, as it were)

I went to see this movie last night, and remembered why I usually go to matinees. No damn kids!!! There was a group of about twenty teenage girls who took every possible opportunity to see who could scream the loudest at the slightest shocking moment in the film. Of course, that's to be expected...and it's not like the kids I had to tell to shut the hell up during Return of the King...you kinda have to follow that.

I thought it was pretty cool. Not the best horror flick, the flashbacks were iffy-looking and a little poorly placed, and Sarah Michelle Geller gave practically nothing to the film...but there were some moments that were sublimely freaky and cool.

I don't really get scared at horror movies, but I do like to be shocked from time to time, and The Grudge accomplishes this in spades. Like most of the Japanese-shock film remakes (The Ring, The Eye and this one), there are a lot of scenes with stuff showing up on film/TV/Security cameras...and it really worked here. If you are one of those people easily freaked out by horror movies, I'd suggest waiting for the DVD release and at least watching it in the comfort of your own living room.

I'd say 3 1/4 stars out of 5, measured against other horror flicks.

Lazzy are I are going to see this movie this weekend. The very first promo I saw had me hooked, and knowing it was based on a Japanese movie clinched it (a la The Ring....they seem to have the best horror flicks over there). I am SO glad those of you who have seen it so far have posted to let us know it's a good flick. There's nothing worse than being sucked in by a killer promo, only to blow the $8 to find that the promo highlighted the ONLY good moments of the flick.

That other new one, "Saw" looks pretty good too. I was starting to debate on which one we should see this weekend, but Lazzy was still leaning toward The Grudge, and now after reading this thread, I agree we'll stick with our original plans. 😀

Mimi

I think i will break down and go see this movie. I like sarah michelle gellar from the buffy series and the other japanese remake The ring was a rather good movie. I'm a sucker for good horror movies.
I had read though that the flashbacks can be kind of confusing. Hopefully i can keep up with it. 🙂

Personally I had no trouble following the flashbacks, but you do have to pay attention-like in Pulp Fiction. I hope folks who've seen the movie come back and give their reviews, because a few critics have had opinions concerning the plot and level of scariness that floored me since I felt the opposite way :wow:

I have to agree with Dave, try to see this at a time when the younger teen crowd won't be there! We saw it opening night and there were WALL TO WALL kids, so many that the manager came in and gave a speech about being quiet and behaving 🙄 .

Having said that, my best friend observed something that was true: for us, the girls' screaming actually helped relieve a bit of the tension. That's how wrapped up in this flick we were!

I can relate to this. We went to see "The Grudge" last night, and while I loved the movie, the crowd was horrible. People were talking, and just being obnoxious. Don't even get me started on the people who were talking on their cell phones (right next to us) during the movie. What made it worse...3 movie ushers who did absolutely nothing!!! :sowrong: UGH!!!!

Despite missing a lot of it because of the noise and distractions, I thought the movie was really good!

Just found a site where you can get the original "Ju-On" films, I just ordered Grudge II 😎

Personally this is just me. But i like seeing NO NAME Actors play the lead roles on Horror movies. It adds alot to most horror movies. I'm a pretty big horror movie fan. And so i just like seeing that better then Big hollywood actors that haven't even been in any horror movies before at all.

YES!!!! I agree with you 100%! I'm a film-lore buff with a bizzare penchant for horror as a film art-form. Most of the best horror/slasher flicks starred relative- or complete-unknowns. Many times, these actors went on to much better things, or at least some sort of a career afterward. Shit, there was Jamie Lee Curtis who was a nobody in Friday the 13th...Heather Langenkamp got a couple of TV series' after starring in the fisrt Nightmare film.

Janet Leigh, whom we lost recently, made her career out of a then-relative-unknown casting in Psycho. Even though her best acting roles were to come (check her out in the original Manchurian Candiate ), her feet were planted in the cement outside og Grumman's for that one scream in the shower...

Most of the really bad horror flicks are the ones that star the Flavor-Of-The-Month / Tiffany-Michell Barrymore-Spears. Usually written as nothing more than a long commercial vehicle for the stars' upcoming series' on the WB.

Also a good reason why unknowns in independant horror films make some memorable stuff. Check out the surprisingly decent acting in these lesser-known flix:

Dog Soldiers

Ginger Snaps

Series 7

....ah, crap...now I'm in the mood to sift through my DVD collection...thanks guys!

:sowrong: 😀

Ummm.... :ermm:

Not to be the snarky, annoying, corrective geek....

Didn't Jamie Lee Curtis get her start in Halloween? And Kevin Bacon was the no-name actor who appeared in the first Friday the 13th?

Mimi

P.S. Lazzy TOLD me to post this! I wasn't gonna be the whiny little know it all nerd and disagree with a fellow mod, but Lazzy said "Oh hell, it's just DAVE! Correct his ass!"....and fearing a severe foot tickle torture, I HAD to comply. I'm sure you understand.

Jamie Lee Curtis was NEVER in Friday the 13th movies. and Kevin Bacon starred in part 1 of Friday the 13th series

did anybody watch that Monsterfeast special on Amc last night with Bruce Campbell?

B.M. Doll: No, I was at work(but I don't have cable anymore, either). Would've liked to, tho'.

Bella: If you get the chance, check out DARK WATER. It's another recent Japanese haunter that really gives the goosebumps!

I've heard excellent things about Dark Water, I hope to see it ASAP!

Bella

I've heard Dark water was good as well. I will check it out 🙂

Now that i got my debit card a few days ago. I'm gonna be bidding for the Haute Tension dvd it came out in 2003 its a French horror movie. You can only buy it online for now (because Lion Gate Films haven't put it out in the usa yet on dvd) and i'm also gonna bid on Battle Royal its a Japanese horror movie that again (you can only buy online)

So i'm interesting to see what both of theses are like. I've heard great things about Haute Tension its been one i have been wanted to see for awhile

You're right, Mimi, about Jamie Lee. I know it was "Halloween", but had my mind on Kevin Bacon when I was thinking of actors for the post. Having a somewhat herbally-induced day, I mixed the two up in my mind. Nice catch, Lazzie!

D'OH! 😎
