Well, the last drive-in theater in Dallas is about to be torn down. The 1 screen Jefferson has been around since 1949 and last featured movies in 1990. It's quite rundown now, even the coats of 'modern' paint are peeling, but underneath you can see the minimalist mural left from the 1940s on the screen. The Dallas/Fort Worth area used to have a LOT of drive-ins. Even Texas Stadium where the Cowboys play had a screen until the mid 80s. The best one was the Astro, 3-screens, very brightly painted and obnoxious, it had a lot of it's original 50s era decor till the day it closed (projection booth burned down). Last movie I saw there was Twister - and it had a drive in scene in the movie! The last 2 or 3 rows still had the old speaker boxes if you wanted to use them.

Any functioning (or not) drive ins near you?

Lived here nearly my whole life and I've never seen it, lol. It's a shame they are tearing it down though.

Nope, the last drive-in down here closed way back in the early `80's or so. Some good drive-in places on the Net:

Hope these help! If I won a zillion $'s, I'd build a drive-in, just for the sheer *#"^% of it. I wonder if regular old movie-theatres will be next, as people stay home in droves to watch their big-screen teevees, freed from noisey patrons and high ticket prices.

Me too! I never saw it until about '93 when I crewed a short film shoot there. It's on Jefferson Blvd. in Cockrell Hill a few miles from 35N. Went there 2 weeks ago to shoot some photos and there were 3 other small groups doing the same thing. I just found out recently there was on in Duncanville off of 67, the Country Squire. The concession stand is a taxadermy shop now. I live 2 blocks from the former Gemini.

You aren't too far off in your wish, Doc - in Dallas there used to be a place called Kirby's Steakhouse. It finally closed late 70s, early 80s. Well, a guy who loved the restaurant won the Texas Lotto and reopened it about 1997 with his money!

Old theaters are on their way out here, too. The Casa Linda, Theater On The Square, even the Texas Theater (also on Jefferson) where they found Lee Harvey Oswald is empty. Dallas has a motto, "Keep the Dirt Flying" and they just seem to tear down, or renovate badly, so much stuff around here.

i believe there is still a drive-in movie place in Middleport,NY(close to Rochester)...used to go there with my family...we'd smuggle in food cuz it was too expensive for 5 people to eat and drink at the concession stand....we'd bring this cooler with pop and anybody else remember Dad's rootbeer ice cream bars???? we would have those too(Dad's was a commercial brand here...not sure if they still make rootbeer or not)...last movie i remember seeing there was TeenWolf with Michael J. Fox.

very sad. americana is dead.

when i was growing up in brooklyn, we would go to the sunrise drive-in on long island. the movie i remember was with kris kristophoson - the sailor who fell from grace to the sea. i remember there was a sex scene, and being too young to watch, my mother puther hands over my eyes for about two minutes.

they even had swings like you see in the scene from the movie grease.

eventually it closed many years ago, and the lot became a flea market on weekends.

I am lucky enough to live somewhere around five miles from a drive-in. unlike Dallas, I live in a very small town that is very into preserving.

drive-ins are so much fun. and you don’t even have to worry about ripping out your car window with that 50 lb steel speaker anymore. 🙂

We have THREE drive-ins within 30 minutes of where we live (one is actually within 10). We go about once a year with the kids...in fact Nemo was great on the really big screen! One location has two screens...one has four!

In high school, my buddies and I had the fortune to work at the Dearborn Drive-In in Dearborn,MI. I kid you not when I say it was, is , and always will be, the greatest job I ever had.
We had to dress in black slacks, black dress shoes, and white dress shirts. You got to work about 6:30, and gathered around the concession stand.
First up...sweep up around the concession stand, and clean the restrooms. There was only one rule to cleaning the restrooms and that was...don't touch ANYTHING with your hands. One person had the bottle of cleaner, and sprayed some in each urinal and toilet. The other guy had the scrub brush, and followed giving each one a quick-over, flushing afterwards.
After the cleaning of the concession stand, the manager would ask who wanted to work the back, and who wanted to work the front.
Working the front involved tickets and money. There were two car lanes, each with a ticket booth manned by two lovely ladies. As the cars came up, you looked in, counted heads, and charged accordingly.
If you worked the back, you basically stood around until the cars started coming back (The gate usually opened at seven). Trucks and vans were asked to park in the fourteenth row and back so as not to block the views of the cars.
When the movie started, we usually used the concession stand as our base of command (it sounds silly, i know). From time to time, we would pair up with flashlights, and walk the lanes making sure there were no troublemakers. If there was, we contacted management immediately, and they dealt with it (while we stood back, arms folded gangsta style...i laugh when i think about us being 'tough').
There were two theater at our drive-in. To get to the second theater, you drove along the wall, circling the first theater, back into a dark corner, finally turning into the second theater. We called that dark corner 'the point'. If you were handling the point that night, you wore an orange vest and had a flashlight...your job was to wave drivers along so they didn't think they were lost. It was pretty boring back there, and I only handled point a few times (one time, one of the managers came out there, produced a joint, and we proceeded to get high...my first time for that🙂.
One of the funny things the management told us was that you ALWAYS carried a lighter. And wouldn't you know it, they were right. I couldn't keep track of all the girls who needed a light🙂
After the first movie ended, we were asked who wanted to punch out, and who wanted to close. My buddies and I usually opted to close...mo money, mo money🙂
If you closed, you stayed for both movies. After people left, you picked up the speakers, turned the volume down, and put them back on their stands.
My buddies and I would usually get pizza afterwards, sleep in the next day, go golfing, then back to work.
When I think of my favorite summer, that was it. The Dearborn Drive-In was torn down the following summer, making way for a grocery store.
Now whenever I hear "Summer of 69", it hits home..."spend my evenings down at the drive in...." 🙂

Holly hell! Drive-In's! A blast from the past 4 sure😉 Last known drive-in I recall was in Wildwood NJ around 1985/86. I still can recall right before it closed they were showing "Howard The Duck" (remember that cheese movie? lol) and someone messed with the lettering on the front of the drive-in and made it say "Howard The Dick" LOL! Never will forget that. Shortly after that it closed down and got killed and had become a shoping center by summer of 87. I remember the last movie I ever saw at a drive-in was "The Goonies" in summer of 84 at that drive-in. Ahhh...memories, where has the time gone😕

Some of the movies I saw at the drive in.....Back To The Future, Predator, Superman Four (gag!), Pee Wee's Big Adventure, National Lampoon's European Vacation, Rockey 4, and Sleepaway Camp.

The Sean Man

LOL yes Superman IV (GAG!) is right! Worst one ever! Movies I saw at the drive in were:

Airplane 2
Superman 3 (great hillarious and timeless!)
The Goonies (as I already mentioned)
Beverly Hills Cop

so..not that many but very memorable
🙂

The Airplane and Superman movies were a "double feature"..remember the good ol drive in doubles?

I remember when we were little my sis's and I, mom and dad would put us in our Pj's and drive the old station wagon to the drive-in movie in the Whitestone area of the Bronx, the only one in the Bronx...now its a big gigantic multiplex job that is truly a mob scene! I live in CT and there are a couple of Drive-in's but at least 1 hour away...it would be nice to go with my kids and I might just do that this summer! Last I saw a drive-in movie it was Jurasic Park III not exactly the greatest picture, we were vacationing up in Lake George NY and my son was like 3, he stayed up to watch this thing which I thought would give him nightmares, he cried when we left cause he wanted to see it again...he thought the drive-in was a real adventure!

When I was in my teens and early 20's there was a drive in Paramus, NJ, where I grew up. It really was a cheap and enjoyable way to spend an evening. I remember we used to bring like a case of beer and stick it in the trunk of the car and bring bags of munchies cuz the food was so darn expensive (we were poor students at the time). It was so great. we used to bring our lawn chair and just lounge out like we were sitting in our back yard. The movie really was secondary becasue we used to bring a football, frisbee, whatever and just hang out. If we liked the movie it was a bonus.

Drive In's

Though unhappliy there are none here left in Rockland County NY, I remember going to them up until the last one ( In Monsey now known as Hasedic Ville.. go figure ) closed back in the 80's. I remember going with friends and a g/f from college and we placed the speaker in the car window.. turned it up as loud as it would go and all sat on the roofs of our cars. Alsa there are no more here and the few that have any memories left.. the sign for the one in Orangeburgh is there but it was a mini-golf course last time I drove by and the one in monsey just had the falling down screen. I remember watching the first Planet of the Apes movie there when we first moved up from NYC.

Are there any more nostalgic and fond memories relating to youth than those from drive-ins during warm summer evenings?

We have one in my hometown. In fact, its where I had my first job in HS. They show a double feature so people can stay for the whole 2 movies or just stay for one and it's always the new releases. It's become an institution in this town. Too bad its only open in the summer, tho.

We have three that I know of in CT...one of which closed for repairs last year and still hasn't re-opened. Of course, it HAD to be the one closest to us. I much prefer drive-ins since you can sit and relax in the car or bring lawn chairs. You can also bring whatever food/drink you like without people complaining that "We don't allow outside food." Drew and I have had many a tickle fight while watching movies at the drive-in. I hope the one we were going to re-opens this year (though I kinda doubt it). We'll have to check out the other two. The only thing I don't like is when we get someone next to us smoking cigars. YUCK!!! Still, I wish they'd do more drive-ins again. It's one of those things that should always be around.

We only have 1 or 2 drive in theaters left, but since i live in AZ the winter is too cold to go out and watch movies and the summer is to hot, but the right time of the season it is perfect...they were gonna tear thedm down but now during the day they have a swap mart there and nite time is a drive in theater..so they keep in business..YAY

I remember in my college years visiting the drive-in with friends to view some interesting cinematic fare:

"Swinging Stewardists"
"Blazing Stewardists"
"Zombie"
"Last House on the Left"
"Horror Hospital"
"The Cheerleader's Wild Weekend"

I went with my friend to see M*A*S*H and Patton at the same drive-in the same night. Although they are undisputedly excellent fims, I went away not really appreciating either one, as they kind of 'zeroed' each other out. It didn't dampen spirits to see others, tho'; sometimes it didn't make any difference what was showing, if we were in the mood! 😀
