This is a quick rough sketch (which I could have spent more time on but just wanted to get out of my system while the idea was still fresh) I drew for an art contest being held at deviantart where the rules were that we draw Mutsumi Otohime (of the anime series Love Hina) in an 'alternate universe' of sorts, or something along the lines of cosplaying.

This submission features Love Hina's own Mutsumi Otohime as a Jedi Padawan learner. I thought mixing something completely different that wasn't even anime would give the picture a uniqueness all it's own. I also felt I could use Mutsumi's somewhat oblivious nature to good effect for the theme of this picture. Hopefully I've achieved that.

I've therefore named this picture "the little jedi that could", modeled after the story title of "the little engine that could", wherein a seemingly helpless little train overcomes adversity and becomes happy, appriciated, and respected. While Mutsumi is happy, is appriciated, and is respected, you just can't help but symphathize with her in this situation. ^__^

Enjoy. ^^

Neat. If only more Jedi had boobs like that, I wouldn't be so very very....very very lonely. 🙄

Thanks Dave. 🙂

But how do you know they don't? Maybe they wear really constricting tops so that that it won't distract their male counterparts. Part of the gag of this picture I suppose is that Mutsumi's breasts are so big no ammount of covering up or layers of clothes could keep them from being noticable.

Awwww....are you lonely Dave...? 😛

😀 For a quick sketch, you did a smash-up job. 😀 I liked her tied back hair, spotlight in her eyes, shaded nose, detail on the hands, the clothes/uniform, her torso and the detail on the saber.

I realize that this was a quick sketch and I don't know where you were in the timeline of your drawing ability. Here are a few things that could be taken into consideration, if they haven't yet been already done.

Her left chest bone line is shown thru her robe. (Is it a see-through under-robe? 😀 )

I am not an expert in anime art but themouth looks unfinished. If it is a style of mouths then I digress. 😀

Finally, the eyebrows are showing thru the hair. (bangs)
😀

I liked it, Overall. Keep it up. 😀

Thanks. Actually, I drew this at 2am but it still came out well.

As for your suggestions:

1- No, it is not see-through, but the fabric could very well just overlap it. You can see the outline of your collar bone through your shirt, now cant you?

2- The mouth is finished. Furthermore, its a style in many animes. I can see how at first it would appear to be incomplete, but then you know me well enough to know that if it was a mistake it wouldn't be such an obvious one.

3- This is also a style in the series itself. Mutsumi has bold, thick eyebrows which add personality. While realistically the bangs would be overlapping the eyebrows and the eyebrows would be obscured to a degree, this is quite common in anime, and even normal cartoons. Look at the Trix rabbit and Lucky from the cereals. Their eyebrows aren't even really connected to their forehead. I think its true also for Sonny, from Coco Puffs.

In any event, this is quite common and in fact, it can add to the comical nature of a picture, as it often does. Save to say, her eyebrows ARE connected but her bangs were made transparent in places so that you could get the full effect of her eyebrows.

Thanks for the review. ^___^

😀 I didn't know you were going free-style. Mixin' modern North American Commercial with Anime. Cool.

Here's a question for the Anime Intermediary student: In the style you have drawn, if professional anime animators were to make a tv series or movie, ho would they show her eating, talking, blowing bubbles etc..?

You are very bold, brave, creative, innovative and ambitious to mix styles.
😎 😀

Actually, I wasn't going free-style nor was I mixing styles..

I just brought up those famous cartoon cereal characters as examples of an extreme as to the eyebrows.

As for your question, I'm not sure what you mean. I would just draw them eating..like a real person would.

So as to clear up any confusion, do note that the expression on Mutsumi's face is artisitically exagerated and is that of surprized or happy. This normally wouldn't be what her or anyone else's mouth would look like. This is purely for effect, another thing which is common.

Normally speaking, the mouths would be regular or normal in other situations and then exagerated in another for some reason. For example, for comedic value, when a character, lets say Naru, were really pissed off, she might be drawn in a chibi or SD form with a particularly larger head that is larger than her body, and her mouth might be huge, full of razor-sharp teeth and her eyes would look evil and menacing. Or, her body might be normal, but her head won't be.

Normally, after such a sequence is over the character reverts back to normal. Its not to say they've changed or 'transformed', but its merely the artist's way of sizing up and illustrating the emotion involved in that moment. Its perfectly acceptable to draw them normally and still draw them happy, sad, mad, or whatever. Take my last Love Hina picture, the one with Naru as Keitaro's fantasy for example. That expression on her face is normal and isn't exagerated. Its a realistic expression using the face's possible contortions. If it were meant to be made more silly, I would have exagerated something.

Its all about knowing when to apply these factors and when not to. Certain situations call you to draw a certain way. If it was a romantic situation you obviously wouldn't draw them exagerated in any way, for that would take away from the picture, much like it would have taken away from the sex appeal of Naru had it looked the slighestest cartoonish.

Anime is very realistically based as far as anatomy is concerned with the exception of breast size (more often than not) and how much weight wee characters can carry (a girl being able to carry a sword thats twice her size for example is exagerated).

There are 'toonish' elements in anime, but I wouldn't call them mixed at any rate, since they are either used sparingly or are in everything. More comedy series are bound to have these types of traits because they suit the theme and genre of that series. And in that case, its the japanese anime equivilent of cartoonish traits, and those are commonly refered to as SD and chibi.

Speechless are we? What am I to make of your smiles and teeth-baring? 😛

I really like this picture, especially the eyes. Very good job making the light reflect off of them. I've seen the anime style where the eyebrows can be seen through the hair, and also the style where certain parts of the body, usually an open mouth, isn't drawn to completion. I'm assuming that's what you've done with her mouth? Great pic.
