Harry Nilsson (June 15 1941-January 15 1994) is one of my favorite artists. Fellow fans, post your favorites here.

Everybody's Talkin' from Midnight Cowboy, which won the Academy Award for best film of 1969.

I owned that album back in the day. Remember this?

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1n9QTkrkP0?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1n9QTkrkP0?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

One, which he wrote. As performed by Aimee Mann in this video (the video is fan made, and the woman in it is not Aimee)

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/r5DHquP1HWU?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/r5DHquP1HWU?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

And Harry's version:

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-nB5VxPOoio?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-nB5VxPOoio?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Myriads

All of those are good, but my earliest and still the best Nillson recollections are of his "Nillson Sings Newman" album of around 1973-74... (?) He did an entire album of compositions by the then-emerging Randy Newman,... tunes like Dayton, Ohio,..... The Beehive State,............. great record.

"I'd rather be dead then wet my bed, oh I'd rather be dead then wet my bed"... This was some short track on my friends ancient Nilsson album, he would play it over and over, I thought it was rather stupid.

How do you post those YOU TUBE links in the body of your post?

Anyway, I have ten Nilsson albums. Some of my favorite songs:

"Puget Sound"
"Sleep Late, My Lady Friend"
"The Flying Saucer Song"
"Home"
"She Sang Hymns Out of Tune"
"You're Breaking My Heart"
"I'm Mean"
"Kojak Columbo"
"Many Rivers To Cross"
"Pretty Soon There'll Be Nothing Left for Everybody"
"Freckles"
"There Will Never Be"
"Something True"
"Gotta Get Up"
"He's Large"
"Subterranean Homesick Blues"
"Without You"
"Blow Me Down"
"Turn Out the Light"
"Loop De Loop"
"It's Not Easy Being Me"
"What's Your Sign?"

Nilsson was that cool blend of singer-songwriter and interpretive vocalist. While songwriting got him his start in the music industry, Nilsson's best-known hits - and a good number of the songs I list above - are cover versions.

Posting videos is a snap. Look under the video you want and click the "share" box, then click the "embed" box. Check the use old embed code option, (the new code won't work on the forum) copy the code and paste it into your post. Nothing to it. 🙂

Don't know why I've never heard of that album but I'll look it up. Thanks. 🙂

I had forgotten all about “The Point”!

On rainy days we would go to down to my neighbor’s psychedelic basement with the best sound system around and listen to the entire album while passing around the "great gazoo".

Some great memories from when life was much simpler …

Thanks, Bugman - let me try that

If I followed your directions correctly, a Nilsson YOU TUBE video should be above.

Yep, you've got it. Great song by the way.

My dear old friend Don (may he rest in peace) had that album and we about wore it out. Simpler times indeed..

A very nice cover of a Badfinger tune.

Shame we lost him somewhat early.

hehe I remember listening to "The Point" over and over again on vinyl when I was a little anklebiter! I actually used to have a pointy paper hat my dad made me and I used to dash around yelling... "Look, now I fit in!"
I'm a dork...

Yes, Harry left us far too soon. 🙁

I bet you bit a lot of ankles you stinker, and that pointy hat must have been a perfect fit for your pointy head. 😛

Drew

This one's my favorite.

Somewhere, I have a bootleg of some demos Harry recorded in 1968 (just him and his piano). They included "Cuddly Toy" which the Monkees recorded.

Apart from that, "Jump Into The Fire", "Everybody's Talkin'". Oh, and "You're Breakin' My Heart"!

Glad to see that my man Harry is more than a footnote to pop history!
