I was watching Fox News Channel last night and they had two ladies on there that we're both from some type of media and image journalists. And the debate that Fox News Channel had going between theses two ladies was. Did they feel and believe that The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (this year's issue the 2005 one) was overally to sexual and pushing the boundaries so to speak?

Because supposebly this year's issue more so then any of the other issues in the past the pictures in this issue are more sexual and provocative from the layouts of the pictures and everything. And one girl on the Foxs News Channel says that they are to sexual from her point of view and from viewing the magazine and so she stated her reasons as to why she thought that. And the other lady on the panel said no that she didn't believe that the Swimsuit issue was at all because it's only bikinis that the girls are wearing and that's it nothing more then that there just harmless bikinis.

so my question is.

do you feel that ''Skin'' type magazines are becoming more and more overally too sexual and that they are pushing thier boundaries of what they can publish in thoses types of magazines and what they can't?

(And this includes ALL types of Skin magazines for both Women and Men not just the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue itself)

Feel free to comment and state your opinions and thoughts. Feel free to debate as well if you disagree with someone's points that they made or didn't make. And this thread is for both the guys on the forum and as well as the girls on the forum to participate in your ALL welcome

Take care

I haven't seen this year's swimsuit issue, so I'm not able to give any critique. I will say that every swimsuit issue I've seen shows very attractive models in provocative positions in swimsuit attire. In short, they've all been 'sexual' in this regard. I think it's a forgone conclusion that the emphasis on such issues has little to do with 'Sports," but to me that's not a bad thing.

I can only speak for me, but the way I see it is this is only one issue out of the year. The women aren't nude,(although sometimes they come close lol)sex is never mentioned, and I would guess the target audience is probably around 85% straight male. So, what's the big deal?

This is going to turn into a rant. I have strong feelings on this subject and I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing them.

I don't typically pick up the Swimsuit Issue but the national discussion around it is an important one. It's a sign of the times. After roughly three decades of sexual liberation the pendulum is starting to swing back. No matter what your television is telling you I can say with 100% certainty that people in my area are becoming more intolerant. Sure, people say the right things when political sensitivity is called for (we call that tact). In private conversations I've never heard so much anti-sexuality, anti-experimentation, and anti-different sentiment in my life. Anyone who shows behavior that doesn’t go along with the “norm” is ridiculed. The same people who mock the conservatives then proceed to mock anything that’s not vanilla and safe; I will never understand how one can walk that tightrope of intolerance.

Just today the House of Representatives passed new fines that can cripple entertainers for indecency. So much of what you've seen on television or heard on radio over the last decade will now be taboo. Sure, it’s not “really censorship”, it’s just huge fines that your government can impose if just one offended person complains. I guess we’ll call it “backdoor censorship” in this case. Because that’s exactly what it is.

Let me evoke an example from "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer" (surprise, surprise). Do you think Mutant Enemy would have dared let Willow and Tara’s lesbian kiss hit the air had these new fines been in place? Heck, even after the infamous Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction networks have been running scared. Willow and Tara's relationship was one of the few long-term homosexual couples to exist on television; the writing on that show changed a lot of people's minds about homosexuality. In the current climate that kind of writing would be stamped out as indecency. Warner Brothers would never have dared air that first kiss.

I can list examples all day. The worst was all the affiliates who refused to air “Saving Private Ryan” for fear that the violence might offend someone. Remember, only ONE person needs to call the FCC for action to be taken. And the new fines have been raised to a staggering $500,000. That can be levied against the network AND the entertainer committing the deed. So some poor actress and can get her career wiped out overnight. Or a certain radio shock-jock can be blasted off the radio for good, if he hadn’t already made his plans to go satellite. I don’t like Howard Stern but I don’t want to live in a world where he’s censored, or anyone else for that matter.

I wonder how long it will be before this is applied to authors? A $500,000 fine is a great why to silence the pen of any dissident writer, don’t you think? It can start with racy magazines, like “FHM”, “Stuff” and of course the Swimsuit Issue. It won’t stay there though, I guarantee it. Heck, the government should fine me for posting my stories. They might offend someone after all and I certainly have $500,000 burning a hole in my pocket. Did you ever read “Lolita” or “Romeo and Juliet”? They both feature taboo subjects (youngsters in relationships); every library that carries them should be fined $500,000 immediately before someone is offended. Why stop there, let’s go after authors who use taboo words like the “N-word” even if it’s in context.

In response to the question that started this thread I say no, if the Swimsuit Issue is a little racy I don’t consider that crossing the line. A person can choose not to read it if it offends their value system and I won’t look down on them for making that choice. The fact that so many questions are being raised about so many things, like the Swimsuit Issue, is a sign of changes in this country. The changes scare me and I think we’ll be much less free before the pendulum starts to turn back again.

Most of my beliefs are what the media now labels “conservative”; however, on this issue I must respectfully disagree with moral majority. Freedom means having the freedom to make the choices you want even if they are (gasp) indecent.

I’m sorry to rant; I get wordy about things that scare me. This is all just my opinion; nothing more, nothing less.

On the last Survivor (Vanuatu), at one point the contestants were reunited with their loved ones. One older contestant named Scout was an admitted lesbian. Other contestants hugged and kissed their better halves, but no footage was shown of any such intimacy with Scout and her life partner. When asked about it, producer Rob Burnette said, considering the current climate of intolerance, he had no choice but to cover his and CBS's asses.
