NEWSPAPER HEADLINE: MODERATES DEMAND
TO BE HEARD, AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT
The news emphasizes the violent, the angry,
the ugly, and the unusual—that’s what makes it news.
Guard your brain from assaults by those who dwell on
the darker, pessimistic side of life, and guard your own emotions to
keep from dwelling on this. Being positive-minded in your thinking is
not improper or unrealistic any more than dwelling on the negative,
the violent, and the miserable is proper (even if it has become “normal”
in our society).

~ Laugh Yourself Thin

Should we guard our brains from assaults by those who dwell on the darker, pessimistic side of life? Guard our own emotions to keep from dwelling on this?

This is a good statement but not everyone has the luxury of just seeing violence on the news. I grew up in neighborhoods where i didn't need to watch the news I just looked outside my window. It certainly does help to cast away what some would consider too much violence in the media but what about too much violence outside your house. Its a reality that exists for those unfortunate enough for those who can't afford to live in safer neighborhoods to actually witness this. it isnt as simple shutting off your television.

Hear, hear!

And remember that what one pays for a newspaper or magazine is but a fraction of its production cost. Advertisers carry the bulk of the freight. Publishers want to please their advertisers with the widest readership possible. So, what subjects get the most people reading headlines or cover stories? Think about it.

Yeah, but it's a really good place to start.

I presently live in one of those neighborhoods you've described so I have a very realistic picture of what you're talking about. My neighborhood is not super-dangerous, but I see way too many people headed to nowhere breeding generations of people with no hope, ambitions, goals, dreams. Kids are just being wasted on their so-called parents around here. If no one extends them alternative ways of living, it's difficult to turn that kind of social programming around.

But I too am tired of the constant bombarding of negativity shown on television these days. Between the so-called "reality tv", the news, and all the useless chatter that comes through the airwaves, I am glad I no longer have television and I don't miss it that much.

You cannot control what takes place on your street, in your neighborhood, city, state, country. But you can control what you feed your brain. Most of the programs I heard of lately is just that......programming. I want nothing to do with it, so I don't. After a couple of weeks, I learned to appreciate the quiet in the house and noticed my thoughts weren't so negative.

It's not just the television, but it plays a large role in one's thought life.

My TV exists solely to play DVDs and videos. I can no longer tolerate broadcast irritainment!

I like that term........think I will steal it from you!:flex::evilha:

Seriously, if people would take the time they spend watching television and use it for education and self improvement, they could move mountains in their lives! I'm constantly reading and studying things and my world has changed a complete 180 degrees in the last year alone. No more chatter, nonsense, and negativity coming at me 24/7.

I thought about getting cable again but as long as Time Warner's in my city, it'll never happen! Worst cable company on the planet!

I didn't invent it. Can't remember where I first saw it. But I think it hits the mark!

I thought that honor belonged to Comcast!
