PHOENIX -- NFL owners went into a speed voting mode before concluding their winter meeting in Phoenix on Wednesday, voting to eliminate the tuck rule, penalize crown of the helmet hits by players who are outside of the tackle box or at least 3 yards downfield and change the replay challenge rule so that a bad coaches' challenge doesn't prevent officials from reviewing the play.

The only proposal that was tabled was whether to open the regular season as early as Wednesday. The NFL likes to open the regular season on the Thursday before the regular Sunday opener and it likes to have the Super Bowl winner have a home game on that night.

How about banning tackling? Is that next?

Not a big fan of penalizing running backs for doing what they have been since the beginning of this game. Love the elimination of the "Tuck" Rule though

Running backs haven't been using the crown of their helmet as part of their running style since the beginning of the game. You couldn't. And the bottom line is, it's ignorant to think that this is neutering the game. Any running back who leads with the crown of their helmet is using poor form and is putting their opponent at risk of concussion or injury. And for them? It's much worse.

I don't know if either of you guys have played a back position in any kind of organized football, but I have; leading with the crown of your helmet means your eyes are on the ground, not looking ahead. You're running blind. It makes your head a big target. A hit in that position can also cause permanent damage to your neck/spine.

I remember when the NFL was about as popular as the NHL and NBA, and lagged far behind MLB. Now that it's the top dog it will do what it wants to do until the ratings drop.
