Look at me with me pumpkin head,
Fat and orange – strawberry red.
They cut me top, scoop out me brain,
Flush the stuff all down the drain.
Strop their knifes and plunge 'em in,
Carve my mouth into a grin.
And in my head a candle light –
That will make my smile seem bright.
But it’s all a sham, a fallacy,

Excerpt from the Great Pumpkin Chronicle, Number 2, November 1996... Bill Greer tops 1,000-pound barrier;
sets new Canadian record
Canada produced its first 1,000-pound pumpkin in 1996, with a lot of help from BiII Greer, a 64-year-old retired farmer and food processor who gardens in Picton, Ont. Greer entered his 1,006-pound monster at the Ottawa weighoff of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, held this year in the city's Byward Market. Alan Eaton, a veteran grower in Richmond, Ont., and enthusiastic compiler of pumpkin statistics, placed second at 941 pounds, just edging past Pete Geerts, from Arkona, Ont., with a 940-pounder. Ottawa's top three weights also were the heaviest registered in all of the 18 GPC weighoffs this year. A third-year grower whose best previous effort was 378 pounds, Greer used seeds from a 680 Dill '94 (male) (792 Holland '93/500.5 Dill '89) and a 697 Ciliberto '94 (female) (502.5 Ciliberto '91/722 Holland '92). In addition to good seeds, Greer attributes his success to good basic farming practices, and plenty of water. He prepared his plot with lots of manure on the bottom, topped with coarse, sandy loam. After a hectic few weeks, with lots of attention from media and other growers, and a free trip for him and his wife to Nut Tree, Calif, life is "back to normal" at the Greer household, but "it was fun for a while." Now, he says, he is "able to trade seeds for some pretty good stock." Most of his seeds have been turned over to the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Growers association, where they will be made available to members, along with those contributed from other growers of giant pumpkins.
