My brothers and I loved his show when we were growing up.

Richard Bernard "Red" Skelton (July 18 1913-September 17 1997) was born in Vincennes Indiana. At age 14 he had a role in a medicine show, then became a circus clown before moving on to the Vaudeville circuit. Red later starred on radio and had roles in Hollywood films 1938-1976.

In 1951 he began hosting his own TV show on NBC. After the 1951-52 season he moved to CBS in 1953, where he remained until 1970. He then returned to NBC, ending his television career after one season. Red created so many memorable characters including Freddie the Freeloader, San Fernando Red and Clem Kadiddlehopper.

We don't produce comedians like Red anymore; he belongs to a different era. Still, I think it is kind of sad in a way.

This man is one of my heroes. I've performed a few of his pantomimes when I was on stage, and I constantly refer to his work. I cried when he passed away.

A wonderful man. In 1966 Red and Marcel Marecau did an entire show of nothing but pantomime. No one else could have pulled that off.

Yes, according to everything I've read about him he was a kind, gentle man. I'm sure he had his flaws, who among us does not?

I remember his great show. I loved it when he would laugh along with his own jokes, and when he or a guest muffed a line. The Gertrude/Heacliff "ship of fools" and the counting horse( Sheriff Deadeye skit?) are among his many classics. For starting this thread, "May God Bless"

The one thing that amazed me were the speeches he'd give at the end of his show. It wasn't the money, or the fame, that kept him going. It was strictly for the lulz, and that meant the most to him.

When I had Radio Classics on XM, I would listen to Red and laugh my ass off. The man was a true pioneer.
