Well, another year in the books, and another exciting finish.

What can you say about a game that will go down as one of the greatest ever played? Especially since we were saying the same thing only two years ago? The opposing team ties the game with a little over a minute left (Ricky Proehl to be exact, as he did with the Rams two years ago against these same Pats), and Brady marches them down for a game-winning field goal.

This was perhaps the greatest defensive game ever played. Neither team might be considered the best defense ever, but never have we seen both teams dominate on D to such effect. No score through almost the whole first half.

I have to give kudos to Carolina, though. Jake Delhomme can play with the big boys. After the running game failed to gain much, he lit it up. No one has picked apart the Pats secondary this year the way that Carolina did in the second half of SB XXXVIII. Before the game, I said that if Stephen Davis's power runs didn't work (which I didn't think they would), DeShaun Foster would be in to add some speed. Did you see that touchdown run of his? Beauty. And how about Jake setting the Super Bowl record for the longest passing touchdown in history? 85 yards, man...good stuff. It was painful to watch such a great performance come up short the way it did. But New England played a great game as well and deserved the win.

We've talked a lot about parity in the modern NFL and how it's affected the game. There may not be dynasties like there were before (although the Pats are the closest we've come to one, we'll see what happens next year), but you have to admit that the age of parity has produced four of the best Super Bowls over the last seven seasons...The Broncos gutsy win over Green Bay, The Rams out-of-nowhere last second save, and the last two Pats games ending the way they did. Even the playoffs have been better in recent years, especially this one. Parity may have done away with Dallas and San Fran winning all the time, but it has made the playoffs something special. I think dynasties may return once coaching staffs start to utilize the system better (again, if the Pats pull it off again, they're a dynasty baby). When the forward pass was adopted, naysayers said it would end all interest in professional football. The AFL-NFL merger was also supposed to spell doom to the game for some. Give this a few more years and you'll see the system pan out.

All in all, this was a great season. The great starts and horrible crashes of the Vikings and Chiefs, the drama in Green Bay, the Eagles losing the third NFC game in a row, the Saints miracle three-lateral touchdown but missed PAT, the Colts choking after being perfect in two playoff games and the final battle of the titans in the Super Bowl.

We can only hope next year is as good. Congrats to the Patriots on being the best in the NFL and to the Panthers who were arguably the best team to ever lose a Super Bowl.

Now I get to hibernate until September. 😎

That was a fantastic game. It could have been easily anyone's game. Id say the biggest mistake for carolina was going for those two two-point conversions. Congradulations to Patriot fans.

Screw parity. I miss those great NFC super teams of the 80s and 90s, they were wonderful to watch. That era will go down as the true golden era of professional football, the days before the cap. Carolina would've had great trouble finishing 9-7 back in the day...

i would like to add for the confident patriot fans. i am sorry, but if the kicker didnt botch that kick and give the patriots all that field to work with, perhaps it would be the panthers celebrating. Just my opinion.

oh, i totally agree with you Aphxa...it was luck...."pure, blind, simple, stupid, doo-dah LUCK!" (But are we New England fans lucky or what??) However, we also could have had a comfortable lead if our kicker hadn't missed that first goal....aw man, it was a nail-biter either way....anyways, congrats Pats fans, and the Panthers were great as well- it very easily could have gone the other way, so this really isn't a superbowl anyone can be particuluarly arragont about 🙂 OK, I'll stop rambling- great game!

i am finally going to give my thoughts on the SuperBowl, especially with all the publicity it got. first about the game. Congratulations New England Patriots. they won their 2nd title in 3 years. Tom Brady played great, the Patriot defense was awesome, and Adam Vinatieri (sp) made the clutch kick. congrats to a great team.

as for the Panthers, they showed they belonged in the big game. they suck that 1st quarter, but started rolling later. Steve Smith is a big play receiver, Mushin Muhammed is a great complement, and Deshaun Foster will be a great RB in the NFL. i remember when he played at Tustin HS here in California and he was a monster back. he scored 59 TD's in his senior season and his Tustin team matched up with Carson Palmer's team in the HS football Championship game back in 1997. that was a wild shootout and i am happy to see him do well. Jake Delhomme may be a good QB in the NFL. time will tell. the Panthers should be applauded for a good game. it just wasnt their night.

the salary cap era has produced some really good SuperBowls. there is parity in the NFL, and any team can win it all. sucks for me because my favorite team was one of those "dynasties". the 49ers will one day return to the top. i hope.....

and last but not least, the halftime show was memorable. why the big deal is beyond me. what if it was an accident? things happen. of course this stunt was probably staged, but would the same reaction would have been given if it was an accident?

i cant wait to see who plays in next year's SuperBowl. the way things go, it might be the Arizona Cardinal vs Cincinnati Bengals. wouldnt that be interesting?

The 'SuperBowl' concession was the winner in this year's presentation.
They lucked out with a decent game, and the controversy bodes well for over-the-top viewership for 2005.
$3mill for a 30-second commercial spot in 2005. You watch.

Nobody got hurt, it couldn't have been planned better.

Timberlake is a no-talent bozo anyway, so he lost nothing.

Prime, if the Arizona Cardinals make it to the Super Bowl, I will personally fly out to the Coast and buy you dinner.
There's a better chance George W. Bush will appoint me Secretary of the Treasury than the Arizona Cardinals making the Super Bowl. Trust me on this.
