Inspired by karategirl's list I though i'd start one based soley on martial arts and the discussion thereof: martial arts you've trained in, are training in or would like to train in. Martial arts you've seen in a film and thought were cool, or would like to know more about (my general knowledge is pretty good so i might be able to help).

Anyway, to kick things off (notice the pun 🙂), I've trained in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) for three years. If anyone has watched UFC, its basically that. It combines elements of boxing, muay thai, judo, brazillian jui jitsu and submission wrestling. I've also dabbled in Wing Chun, a form of Kung Fu. Since I'm moving on soon (leaving uni where i train) I'd like to take up Muay Thai more seriously and possibly go to Thailand to learn it properly.

Ok, so we do NOT engage you in a tickle-fight!!

Each, knee, san, she, go, row, sheesh (!!), hach, ku, ju....

I've been formally trained in Shotokan, played capoeira, and learned a little Gung Fu. I'd love to train in MMA with Travis Lutter, since he has a school local to me. I'd also like to find a capoeira teacher close to home so I can limber up some more.

Ah, UFC... Sweaty, half-naked men rolling around inside of a cage groping each other into submission. What's not to love?

Taekwondo since i was 6 1/2, and Drunken Master is easily my favorite martial arts film

yeah... does get a bit sweaty... my friends wont let me teach them brazillian jui jitsu since it will essentially involve my sitting on their face a lot of the time... still, we have a golden rule in BJJ to counter this:

1st degree brown belt, american kenpo karate. stopped training about 2 years ago.

I'm a 2nd degree black belt (and certified instructor) in Tae Kwon Do and Judo. I've dabbled a bit in Hapkido, Akido, and Iai Jutsu (a japanese sword style), but never taken actual lessons.
I very much want to learn Muay Thai.

I know I'm nitpicking, I'm not doing it to be a dick though.

Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Gou, Roku, Hachi, Nana, Kyu, Juu.

Ah, well, different village in Japan... 😛 Thanks!

Never attempted to spell it out before, but that was what I remembered "acoustically..." Then circling back after "Juu" ---
It's been a while!!

I don't trust Wiki all that much, but this at least explains why my (abbreviated) version is slightly different (I'm sure I drove our Instructor nuts, thankfully he had/has a sense of humor...) :

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_count_to_ten_in_Japanese
Properly counting to Ten in Japanese:

1: Ichi (Ee-chee)
2: Ni (Nee)
3: San (San)
4: Yon (Yohn) OR Shi (Shee), depending on use.
5: Go (Goh)
6: Roku (Roh-koo)
7: Nana (Nah-nah) OR Shichi (Shee-chee), depending on use.
8: Hachi (Ha-chee)
9: Kyuu (Like Q) OR Kuu (Koo), depending on use.
10: Juu (Joo)

Did judo for 8 years, and nearly got my black belt in jiujitsu (mixture of traditional japanese and dutch practicality) but I was hampered by injuries with the last one being permanent enough to force me to quit. (6 years later my wrist is still fucked up)

I did jiu jitsu for a short time. I got bored of it pretty quickly. One trick I always remember though is that if someone throws a right hook at you, grab you left ear quickly. Your left forearm and bicep totally blocks the strike and they are left wide open for a straight right to turn their lights out!

Learned a few submission moves but to be honest, I already knew them from watching MMA on tv. Cool sport though if you have the time to dedicate yourself to it.

The stuff I did those years was 90% practical knowledge i.e.: what to do when somebody tries to stab you and how to fight in a situation with 1 or more attackers. And some temple style traditional stuff. Part I liked best was goshin jitsu, which involved lots dislocated joints and broken bones. (twisting someone's arm and then smashing their elbow to bits in 1 fluid motion)

Thats what I love about about MMA and how my instructor teaches it. no cocking around with forms or stances just "get his wrist and break it like so. if he's still moving then kick him in the face." no nonsense.

Got the "citrus" belts in karate, judo and TKD as a kid. Did 4 years of kung fu and tai chi and then 5 years in a military combat system in which I also qualified as an instructor (now lapsed.)

Most recently I have beeing doing self protection systems like krav maga, combatives and goshin-jitsu.

When I can find the time I want to do some MMA for the hands on training and conditioning. I have no interest in competing though. Too old for that. 😉

OMG you're in General!! Who let you in!?!?! 😛 :twohugs:

Ok, I'm reading all these posts and I have to say I feel like such a slacker. Outside of some defense courses that I wouldn't count for shit I have zero training. I would LOVE to learn Muay Thai and Krav Maga. I found a place that's not too far from where I live that is supposed to be an excellent training facility in Krav Maga. I have always wanted to learn Aikido as well. I used to date a guy that trained in Aikido and I'd go watch his classes and always want to join in but it was through my college so I couldn't jump in mid course. 🙁

As far as movies go, recently thanks to Suik, I watched District B13 and LOVED it. I can see where the Bourne movies got their inspiration. I love classic martial arts movies as well like Seven Samurai. Samurai movies in general are pretty much awesome. 😀

This thread is so WIN btw.

About 20 years ago, I studied Kung Fu and did that for about 6 months. For almost three years, I have been enrolled in Tae Kwon Do with some cross training in Kenpo and Muy Thai. I have recently switched schools and now studying traditional TKD. I am a brown belt as of this time with my 1st degree black belt waiting in the wings.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many badass brown and black belts here, good stuff. Oh and I was wondering what fellow martial artists made of the recent Ninja Assassin. It left me in something similar to post-coital bliss, but then I'm a sucker for anything with ninjas in it. I know parts of it were ludicrously cheesy, and the storyline wasn't exactly mindblowing, but in terms of fight sequences and stylised-violence I don't think any other ninja-related film has come close.

Stylised is right! I haven't seen this yet but would like to.

There has never really been an authentic ninja movie. The closest thing would be the Shinobi no Mono series from Japan.

The halcyon days of people like Jackie Chan and Jet Li are sadly behind us with the current crop of HK stars usually being singers on wire rigs rather than really skilled performers. The best gritty fight scenes aren't even produced in the Far East anymore. Who would have thought Matt Damon would have become one of the screen's most memorable fighters?

If you like action movies I can recommend you looking further afield. France has the brilliant parkour/martial arts flicks District 13 and District 13 Ultimatum:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cqi3E6RRCig&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Cqi3E6RRCig&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jE9Mab6gJnE&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jE9Mab6gJnE&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Then from Thailand there's the awesome Tony Jaa in Ong Bak:

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nAYUv9wjV48&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nAYUv9wjV48&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

These will have to do until I make my own ninja movie. 😀

I've read up on Feng Shui and am confident that I can rearrange your living room to maximize your Chi! As well, my Tai Chi training will camouflage me as a willow bending to the wind should you try to attack me. Plus, I own a gun.
