Hello all! Some of you may have read my back story to the RP I might be doing. Well, I had been wanting to use it as a basis for a story I wanted to write, and thought I might drop this first part by you all and see what you thought! Forgive any grammar and silly mistakes, I tend to lose myself when writing. Enjoy!
Her last year here. Despite having come here for the past three years, the first day back was always the same. New first years students fawning over how awesome the older students were. She remembered how she envied the older students when she first came, how smart and confident they were. She chuckled softly to herself as she stepped inside the doors of the school. Such memories seemed so distant now, though in reality it really wasn't that long ago. She was gifted in the magical arts, so her parents had told her. They would turn out to be right, as she excelled in all of her classes. Well, the ones involving the teachings of the different school of magic, at least. But this year was different. Up until this point, all of her classes involved the different elements of magic and their practical use, such as making shelter or conjuring water. But this year? It was time to learn 'Dilthueeli', the school of magic Zakue had perfected. The idea excited and terrified her. She knew her abilities were above the norm, and it wasn't a cocky thought at all. It was fact. But she herself was terribly tic-
"Shariea! Hey! Hey!" Shariea heard her friend calling. That high pitched, always excited voice was too easily identifiable. She turned with a smile.
"Heya Telie. I thought I was the only one that came early. What brings you here?" Shariea asked, wrapping her arms around the eagerly awaiting Telie, hugging her close.
"The exciting news! Didn't you hear?" Telie asked, finally letting go of the friendly embrace, her face lit up with a bright smile. It took time for Shariea to get used to such unrepressed optimism, but she grew a sort of fondness for it. Whatever was Telie talking about though?
"I'd say not. What news?" She asked, causing Telie to giggle quietly.
"Our classes! They canceled all of our classes except for 'The Art of Dithueeli'. They didn't say why, but I'm so excited! No boring classes!" Her voice squeaked happily. Great. Shariea had hoped to have a bit of time today before preparing for what would probably be torture. Maybe she did.
"Awesome! That's a relief. Is it still a night class?" Sharies asked, hoping that she could maybe go home and get a few more hours of sleep. Her heart sank slightly when Telie shook her head.
"Nope! Class is in ten minutes! That's why I'm here already! So, come on, let's go!" She squeaked, taking Shariea's hand.
Shariea chuckled softly at her optimism, despite her subtle worry about this class. She closed her eyes and squeezed Telie's hand. In a moment, the air around them swirled softly, tingles crawling up from their toes to their neck. Telie began to giggle softly, as she usually did. Shariea bit her lip, fighting back her own brief giggles. The sensation of falling entered and left both of the girls in an instant as the world around them almost melted away, revealing different scenery. They were standing outside of their classroom. Teleportation was always a strange sensation, and it took a great deal of practice to adjust. The first time Shariea learned how, she found herself collapsed at her destination in a fit of giggles. It was embarrassing. So, she worked all night on perfecting it, until she could limit the physical effect on her body as well as adjust to the sensation. Still, she had to work hard to suppress a giggle that built up inside of her. She was glad it was over.
"Hehe! I do love when you teleport us Shariea! It's so giggly!" Telie spoke as she let go of Shariea's hand. Telie did seem to have a sort of obsession with the teleportation. Shariea couldn't understand why, but that was Telie for you. They both walked into the classroom. Shariea was suprised to see that it was mostly empty, save for one other student. Shariea had seen him before, but never really talked. Golrim was his name, as she remembered. The room itself was quite large, bigger than even the rooms for the other schools of magic. Most rooms for training in the magical arts tend to be pretty large, to give room for the student to practice their art without interruption. This room, however, was almost twice the size. She noted that at the front of the room, from wall to wall, there was a sort of glowing field. It was like a road and connected both walls. She recognised a few of the runes that were hovering right above it. They were runes of protection. It must have been designed to keep any spells from spilling out into the classroom. But why the road shape? It hit her finally. They were going to be dueling. Once again, that feeling of dread and excitement entered her.
She barely had time to register that feeling before an elegantly dressed, older man walked inside. His robes were a deep red and she could see them covered in runes, some of which she couldn't recognize. He must be their teacher.
"Everyone take a seat. Or stand. Whatever you're comfortable with. This is going to be the whole of the class. If it seems small, that's because it is. There has been a change of plans for this year, due to unforeseen events. This will be your most important class that you take. You have all been chosen for your prowess in these arts. This is why I am to be your teacher. You know who I am, even if you don't recognize me. Any guesses?" The man spoke. His voice had a hint of playfulness in it, though his demeanor suggested he was being serious. It was a strange contradiction. Shariea examined him closer. Her eyes widened. Could it be?
"Zakue? Zakue Bondence?" She asked, her voice a slight bit broken. Such a powerful man was going to teach her? She was good enough for it? All of her dread faded into elation. This was an honor that she never thought she'd have. The man smiled at her.
"In the flesh. And robes. And jewelry. Nevermind, you get the point. Yes, I am Zakue. I will be teaching you in my school of magic, which you know as 'Dithueeli'. It is hard to learn and hard to master. And we are pressed for time, so there will be no real teaching as you know it. No books, no reading. We're going to jump right into it unleashing your inner potential. Telie, step up!" He spoke quickly. He must indeed be pressed for time. Shariea cared little. She was still giddy at being taught by such a historical figure. She couldn't believe he was still alive. After all, it had been awhile. Telie walked over to him happily, smiling with glee.
"It's really nice to meet you! Wow, the Zakue? That's so cool! Ok, ok, I'm sorry, teach me!" Telie sputtered out rapidly, readying herself for whatever was going to happen. Zakue smiled.
"I like your enthusiasm! Alright. Endurance and counter spelling first! You must learn to repel others wielding a similar sort of magic as this. Know that not every spell will be as focused as the ones I will use, as many other smaller cultures have developed their own version of what I do here. Now, first, get a feel for the spell." Zakue threw his hand out. A burst of energy shot out from his palm, a soft blue in color. As it shot from his hand, it's form began to change. As it flew toward Telie, it's snake like shape began to grow appendages, like long thin bristles. It reached Telie, whom braced herself quickly with an arcane ward. To her credit, Telie was amazing with warding and protective magics. Her hands rose above her head as her eyes closed, concentrating on keeping her ward strong. Zakue nodded.
"Very good! You do have some potent wards. However, they are flawed." Zakue grinned. His snake-like energy wrapped around her ward. It seemed that it was unable to penetrate her ward. That feeling faded as one of its small bristles pushed right passed her ward wish ease. It pushed until it found itself snaking against her left arm. She grinned and bit her lip, focusing on her ward still. The bristle slid down through her sleeve, and suddnely started writhing in the slight hollow of her underarm. Telie wasn't strong enough to fight back the wave of laughter as it burst from her, jerking her arm down. As she did, her ward faltered slightly, giving a few more bristles the chance to worm inside, each moving to different parts of her body. One wormed against her belly, causing her to bend over and eventually fall down. The ward shattered, causing the full of the snake like energy to wrap around Telie's fallen form. Telie almost screams as the bristles wormed their way through her cloths, teasing her skin. In an instant the spell vanished. Zakue clapped his hands.
"Well done! That was very good! You are the first to actually put a hold on my spell. It may seem like a small victory, but it speaks volumes of your potential. Very good Telie!" Zakue praised. Telie was panting on the floor, but managed to sit up and smile at him.
"Tha-haha-nk you, Sir! heh... " She spoke softly. Shariea walked over to Telie, helping her to her feet. She smiled.
"Thanks Shariea..." Her voice spoke softly. Sharied nodded, carrying her off to a nearby chair. She set Telie down in the chair softly, taking a seat beside her. Zakue nodded slowly.
"Yes. On to the next. Golrim, you're up." Zakue spoke, his eyes drifting to the man in question. Golrim stood, standing just as Telie was. He prepared to counter anything Zakue threw at him. Shariea knew very little of Golrim, having never really seen him with his magics. Zakue held out his palm, doing just as he did before and releasing a burst of energy that snaked out toward Golrim. Golrim, in turn, held both his hands out, twisting his hands back and forth. The snaking energy stopped half way, writing slowly. Zakue grinned softly, nodding at Golrim.
"Very nicely done! Taking control of the spell to cause it to dissipate or falter. A good idea. But not good enough." Zakue flicked his wrist. A wave of force knocking his own spell right at Golrim. The energy latched onto the poor man as soon as it touched him, the bristles doing the same to him as it did to Telie. He gritted his teeth, but his resistance died quickly as the bristles made their way past his clothing, flicking on his bare skin. He hit his knees, laughing wildly and losing all of his concentration. Zakue snapped his fingers and the energy fizzled away.
"Another valiant attempt! A credit to your training Golrim. You and Telie have done much better than your peers anticipated! But we have one more person in waiting. Shariea, come up and let's see what you can do." He spoke, looking to her with a smile. Shariea gulped. This was going to end the same as it did with Golrim and Telie. She had to think of a way to prevent that from happening. She was horribly ticklish and couldn't stand the thought of embarrassment in front of these people. She stood, walkling to where the other two had stood. She closed her eyes, clearing her thoughts of doubt and concern, opening them once more and looking to Zakue.
"I'm ready, sir."
"Then let us begin. Prepare yourself."
"Shariea! Hey! Hey!" Shariea heard her friend calling. That high pitched, always excited voice was too easily identifiable. She turned with a smile.
