Last night i was watching a bit of "My Fair Lady" and although the story is cute...and Audrey Hepburn is delightful, as is Rex Harrison..i personally find the music in that musical to be very annoying..now this is just my opinion..as someone who enjoys the occasional Musical..i wonder why i find this particular musical to be annoying..

Let's take "Oliver"....there is nothing funny about either Fagin or Bill Sykes..yet the musical tended to portray them that way...it's been years since i last saw it..and i can't remember if they dealt with how Bill beat Nancy to death or not..but in the book, it was a horrific and terrifying scene..so i don't care for that musical either..

"Oklahoma" i can take a bit..there are some tunes there that i like..but some of the productions are overly long for my taste...

"Jesus Christ Superstar" i can always enjoy...the music fits..there isn't one bad tune, in my opinion...same thing holds true with "The Sound of Music"

Now this is just my opinion of course...what if any musicals do you like and/or dislike?

My favorite is the Jerry Springer Opera. Funny as all hell, catchy, and has good points.

Some other favorites are Sweeny Todd, Repo! The Genetic Opera and the South Park Movie XD

Well, as some of you may remember I started a thread about a certain musical a while ago. Wicked is a musical I could personaly reccomend to anyone, there is only one song I'm not so nuts about, the acting is great and the costumes are beautiful.
I have seen some of Oklahoma but not all so dont understand the story, though I do like when Curly says, "then why dontcha turn around and look you crazy woman?" lol.
And Karen, I agree, the South Park movie is a work of genious 😉
Also used 2 watch sound of music alot with my grandma, 1st I saw it thought the wedding was the end. I like a lotta musicals, but Im gonna shut up now
Bugs 😉

Awww that's ok Izzles, I was just obssesing over one musical, this is a thread for all of em 🙂

I like this http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEOgAUZoViQ&feature=related

I feel fortunate that I saw "My Fair Lady", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Annie" and
"1776" with the original casts.

I took my wife to see the later shows. A few years back, we saw "Windy City" the musical version of the movie "Front Page" for our anniversery. It was at the Walnut Street Theatre here in Phila.

Glad we saw "Cats" on PBS. I would have never spent the money. Saw "Superstar" in the 70's. Saw a reprise of 1776 during the Bicentennial.

We saw "Gaslight" and "Mousetrap" at community theatres. We have an excellent group right in the neighborhood. They always sell out.

"Annie Get Your Gun"
"Music Man" (got to be in it while I was in high school, had a starring role as the Winthrop character. I was a Senior and a lot thinner. Got two standing O's for it)
"Meet Me in St Louis"
They have been around for 20 yrs.

There is one (stage) musical that I like in particular: Joe Brooks' "Metropolis" (based on Fritz Lang's 1927 movie by the same name). Unfortunately it was never staged again since it's initial staging, because the costs of running it were too high for it to be profitable. So I never got the chance to see it in reality. And sadly there are no video recordings of it either. But being a crazy fan of everything Metropolis-related, I own the CD recording and listen to that every now and then.
Brian Blessed plays/sings one of the main characters (John Freeman, the Master of Metropolis), and he has one fantastic singing voice. (this the guy that plays king Richard IV in the first Blackadder series and Prince Vultan in "Flash Gordon")

"The Machines are beautiful,
more perfect than men,
and they must be kept running
any way that they can.
They show no emotion,
they will always obey,
Machines will keep us going
Through the night, through the day..."

Repo: The Genetic Opera is one of my current favorites. Rocky Horror is always good. Honestly there are way to many to list...so i'll just stick to these two as being some of my most favorites.

I agree that the South Park movie deserves to be taken seriously, so to speak, and it's a great musical.

South Pacific (esp. "Dames")
Disney's Jungle Book
Rocky Horror
Little Shop of Horrors (esp. "I Am Your Dentist" lmao)

As for ones I dislike, most of the rest.

O_O Holy hell, how could I forget Rocky Horror??! >___< My eternal apologies to Tim Currey!! XD

Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and Across the Universe are great musicals

Interesting...

...
I didn't think I was much of a fan of musicals, but when I stop and take some time to think of the ones I have enjoyed over the years, there's more than afew. I've missed some of the greats, like My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, and South Pacific(all mentioned above). I still haven't seen easily available ones like Little Shop of Horrors or Rocky Horror. Some already mentioned that I'm a fan of are Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Disney's Jungle Book, and the South Park movie.
Others that I don't think I spotted in other posts that I enjoyed are Cannibal: The Movie, All that Jazz, Cabaret, Chicago, Oliver, Tommy, Phantom of the Paradise, the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, and Sound of Music, Disney's The Lion King(and probably some others from "Empire of the Mouse" that I'm forgetting).

Three that come to mind that I didn't much care for include Paint Your Wagon, Jesus Christ: Superstar and Nightmare Before Christmas.

It also occurs to me just how many musicals are in fact rather "dark" pictures. Seriously! At least going by ones that I seemed to find enjoyable.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure there's another ten or twenty out there that I'm brain-farting on, so I reserve the right to think up others as we go. :37:

Ooh yeah, rocky horror, and the dentist song from lil shop of horrors, thanks for the reminders guys 🙂

Phantom of the Opera( provided the cast is top notch. this one is easy to screw up if the cast isn't right )
Oliver! ( yes they did feature Nancy's death. )
Phantom of the Paradise ( Paul Williams as SWAN... brilliant! )
Wicked
A Christmas Carol: The Musical ( music by Alan Menken
Disney's: Beauty and the Beast
Little Shop of Horrors

Out of curiosity, where did you find the CD? I've been looking for it for aeons and haven't yet come across it.

Also, can't believe Guys and Dolls and Hello, Dolly haven't yet been mentioned...

We forgot one....

The Producers. I prefer the original version with Zero Mostel. It wasn't a musical until Mel Brooks (He owns the book and intellectual property) decided to make it into a real musical.

BTW, I forgot about Phantom. Before I saw the movie, the music was performed by marching bands and drum & bugle corps back in the 80's. Santa Clara Vanguard did best. They also won with a presentation of Fiddler on the Roof. Their encore was the 'Bottle Dance with the entire rifle line (12 girls).

To Dream The Impossible Dream...

No one else know of The Man Of La Mancha?

Ooo!

Ooo!

The King & I! Well, I liked it on TV when I was a little kid. Haven't seen it in decades...

I've never gotten around to seeing The Producers. I hear it's a riot.
