Looking back, I'm absolutely sure that Ronald Reagan genuinely believed in his own theories on smaller, more limited government. That being said, I'm wondering just what Ronald Reagan would think of George W. Bush's two and change trillion dollar proposed budget...
But then, it doesn't matter, anyway. The only thing that does matter are the spirtual values the President represents. The rest of the picture can look after itself.

I would guess that Bush differs from Reagan in that he supports whatever is politically convenient for him. Clinton did the same thing, but the difference between him and Bush is that Clinton did it in a smart way. Clinton may have compromised on a few issues like corporate corruption, but he maintained the general liberal agenda. By contrast, Bush is willing to completely neglect certain aspects of the conservative agenda in order to gain certain votes. The size of the government is a good example of this. Somehow, Bush has gotten it in his head that, after 9/11, big government is good government. Republicans have always claimed to support smaller government, but Bush obviously differs greatly on that issue. I'm different from most liberals in that I support smaller government just like most Republicans, but what I don't get is this: Republicans don't seem to mind that Bush is increasing the size of the government. In certain ways, Reagan did the same thing; apparently, increasing the size of the government is ok if it mostly involves the military. For a party that focuses so much on business and money, you'd think Republicans would care more about fiscal responsibility. However, balancing the budget seems to be the last thing on Republicans' minds.

The desire for smaller, more limited government is just a myth. It's primarily the territory of people who call in to Talk Radio. Politicians derive a substantial amount of their power from the ability to raise and disperse revenue. Cutting taxes and shrinking government would tend only to cut and shrink the power of an ambitious politician, regardless of party or stripe. The naive libertarians who pine endlessly for the mythical 'Cincinnati' of the early days of the American Republic, putting down their plows, legislating a few laws and then going home to their plows again don't seem to understand this.
I laugh every time I encounter people like this, the ones who talk about the 'gentlemen farmers' of the early days, of Washington's and Jefferson's era, the non-professional pols. What a bunch of crap! They were just as much a bunch of corrupt, venal, money grasping brigands as they are today. So many people in this country are so utterly delusional that it provides a never ceasing source of entertainment...

And you want this man re-elected, with a deficit like that? Damn, maybe Kerry will win after all. As repulsive at times as Clinton was, at least the economy didn't suffer and we at least had a surplus under Clinton😀

One can only hope Kerry (or whoever) wins....

get who re-elected, Natural? Read all of the posts, not just the hilarious Ice one. I'd sooner vote for one of the residents of the monkey house in the Philadelphia Zoo...

You people need to get your priorities together. Who cares about the economy and jobs, the lame-ass excuse for medicare reform, and foreign policy when gay marriage is quickly becoming the most prominent issue in the 2004 election campaign! Personally, I find it completely reasonable to spend the time and gazillions of dollars necessary to enact a constitutional amendment to address an issue that strikes at the core of American values, even though it won't affect Americans who are not gay. Above all else in this campaign, this issue simply cannot wait.

Something that has always made me laugh is to hear the president being criticized/praised about the economy. The current state of the economy is always in the hands of the Federal Reserve Board.

hmmmm

Sushi, good use of sarcasm... I love it... 😀

Kyle, I totally agree that the Fed Reserve Board has more to do with the economy than the President; however, it's the president's willingness to cooperate with the Fed Reserve that allows an economy to recover. The disputes between Reagan and Fed Chairman Paul Volcker were infamous in the 80's, and they can be seen as the source of a lot of economic problems then. By contrast, Clinton cooperated quite well with Greenspan to give us the economic growth seen in the 90's. There are plenty of other factors for the growth of the 90's as well, but Clinton's cooperation had a lot to do with it. I will bet you a million dollars that Greenspan would never have recommended Bush's tax cuts. In times of recession, the last thing you want to do is run a deficit. The only time that ever worked was Roosevelt's New Deal Plan, and those were extraordinary circumstances. If Bush was aiming to recover the economy by issuing his tax cuts, he should've decreased federal spending even more. Budget surpluses greatly improve the government's ability to heal the economy. Due to Bush's unwise deficit spending, Greenspan will have a much harder time bringing us back to the economic growth of the 90's....

Knox, if you were a girl, I'd want to marry you! 😀😀😀

When it comes down to it, both parties want a huge entourage in government. Whether it's suits and ties or boots and uniforms, doesn't matter that much. Screw the lot of them.

Did Ice's post get deleted? I can't see his name anywhere.

Interesting point regarding the Federal Reserve...

It's not a nationally owned resource at all, it is in fact a cartel of privately owned banks that hold the I.O.U.s for every American citizen. When FDR declared the United States insolvent in 1933 the private banks became the licensed creditors and now every speeding ticket, tax dollar and free contribution goes towards paying off a debt (that never existed as anything more than ink on a page or figures on a screen) that is gradually crushing the economy of America and screwing it's less well-off citizens through the floor. At the rate of interest that the banks are scamming you folks for, it will take several millenia of frugal government and poverty of the people to get rid of the debt, by which time the government would have borrowed even more anyway, so the cycle never ends. (It was designed to be interminable anyway. That's how it's always worked, especially with the Third World.)
