One of my favorite pass times is screwing with people over the Internet. I like going to Christian public forums and laugh at the people trying to convert me because of the atheistic views I present. However, one time recently I decided to ask a rather simple question that many people who practice Christianity should know; why is water mixed with the wine at the concecration ceremony? These are the answers I received:

- To cut costs. Think about it, that's a lot of wine!

To cut costs? That's what the sacred ceremony at every mass is about; cutting costs?

- They bless the water first to make it "Holy" then they put it in the wine. It is to bless the wine .... hope this helps!

Not even close. First off, the water is not blessed that is the point of the ceremony. Not until the priest makes the blessing the water and wine becomes Christ's blood. It is not done to "bless the wine".

- What, do you think it's okay to get drunk at Mass?
People need to get into thier cars and drive. Even the tiniest bit of wine could make one or two people not-so-safe. And what about parishoners who are recovering alcoholics?

Wow, where to begin with this response. Just how much wine exactly are you getting at your church sir? You make it sound like the wine is on the keg being passed out in pints to the parishoners. Altar wine is the cheapest, low proof liquor out there. One small sip would do next to nothing. If you are at risk of driving intoxicated after a mere sip of Christ's blood then you should never ever enter a bar in your life; not even a dinner toast.

- It probably goes back to some pagan ritual where most of what they do came from. I personally don't know.

At least you said you didn't know so I'm not going after you.

- First wine is expensive. Second a lot of people get drunk very easily and third it is a symbolic drink anyway. Kool-aid would work just as well.

Another drunk at the church. i do agree about the kool-aid but is next to impossible to get drunk over a small, tiny sip of this stuff.

- Cut costs and also, aren't there kids taking communion who are not of drinking age? Maybe by diluting it the church gets past the law. Another loop hole or something.

Behold, the sacred rite of mixing water with the wine at mass is to get into a loophole so underage kids can drink the communion wine. And a lot of people seem to think the church likes cutting costs.

- Because wine itself is very strong, and some people don't like things which are very strong, so they mix water into the wine to distill it so it won't taste as strong as it did before.

So you are saying that the mixing water is ritual is to satisfy the personal tastes of the parishoners to avoid strong alcohol? it tastes strong because it's just bad stuff that they use.

- To make it "Holy Wine". The water is supposedly "holy". It is true that Jesus didn't do that, but it's supposed to represent His "Holy Blood". It's just a symbolism from the Catholic Faith.

So the water is supposedly "holy" now? Not saying that it is or it isn't, but it is now a suspicion that the priest uses "holy" water to bless the wine. Yes it is true that Jesus didn't do this, but I was getting at the reason why it is done at mass despite him not doing it himself.

- To cover for the missing wine that went to the priests and altarboys.

Hell, I drank a bottle of that stuff when I was one. Not saying that it was good, it was horrible, but I had nothing to do while i waited around with friends in the sacresty.

Not one decent answer!!
