i don't normally play RPG games, but loads of people have played and say they love it, which spurs me to play now. which ones should i get? any tips or advice?

yah just get the good ones, final fantasy 7, 8, 10, 12 whenever it comes out. They're going to really cheap. Id say get into some of the early titles too if your interested.

ppppppplease dont get into final fantasy online, easily the biggest dissapointment and waste of money.

then again you dont really need to play final fantasy games to get great rpgs. If you have a game cube you can try out the last great sega game. skies of arcadia. Diablo one and two for the pc are fun games without the turn based combat.

My Personal Suggestion is to purchase yourself an SNES (less' yalready got one{hella redneck talk}) and purchase Final Fantasy Three, or, just get it on PS1 known as "Final Fantasy 6" because it was the 6th final fantasy in Japan. Anyway, I suggest that one, as well as Final Fantasy 7, both incredible games. I personally enjoy both storylines about equally. I don't suggest you get 8 unless your into A romance style RPG, I found it to be okay, but most of my friends didn't like the concept that your main character has the personality of A paper bag. Final Fantasy 9 was A pretty solid game, the different graphic and storyline styles were nice, and they have a few humerous movies, although most found it slightly "kiddish" Final Fantasy 10 has terrible voice acting, but was A pretty solid game as well. Well, I gotta go, I have things to do...

Well, why not all, save for one: FFXI. FFX-2 is really good too, wonder why no one mentions it.

yeah ff 10 was really good. X-2 which is a sequel to ff 10 is cool as well. Listen to duke diablo he knows much muhahah.

yeah, i was hooked on Xenosaga, but i got to a difficult part and had to give up.
i think i'll get FF7 and go from there. so lemme see... FF9, FFX-1, FF-online, are the ones not get get? ok, thanks, i'll probably get one at a time and see how i like them, if their that good, i might not be leaving my room in a few days, and get the eyes of a mole, lol.

Im gonna throw it back old school...I just bought a NES...YES I SAID NES!!!...inorder to play my favorite RPG, the ORIGINAL Final Fantasy. Let me tell you...it was worth it. That is the one to start with. The new ones have bells and whistles yes, but it was the original that made me love the series. I belive they released it in a more updated format (that way you do not need to buy an NES). Just my two pesos...

which gives me an idea, i think i can hit up some emulation sites to get an nes emulator and FF 1.

Game tiiiiiipppssss? 😀

1. Phoenix downs = Healing you from 'dying'

2. Some final fantasies have "time gauges" so best attack quickly for the ones that do, know your characters moves and such!

3. Build up atleast 4 characters and always the main one! You never know who will get singled out for an adventure!

4. When getting a chance to level up...do it. You can get gil (money), items, armor, weapons, or levels!

5. Final Fantasy X-2 is very different from the rest (only 3 characters, all girls, first MAIN girl character ever, you play on 'missions' rather than open gaming, adds up "completed story percentage points", etc)

6. There is always a fighter in the game, a white mage/ black mage for healing and evil magic, and some sort of fighter that best attacks air enemies. Figure out who is who for best combos!

7. Explore explore explore! There are so many hidden artifacts, opportunities, people, etc to see, talk to, meet, take, etc that you should never be bored!

8. If you are looking for starting out on an EASY one, I have found the easiest so far is Final Fantasy 10. It doesn't time your attacks so take all the time you need. The goals are clear and the only difficult concepts to grasp are.....One..that the mini 'game' Blitzball takes some time to master in order to be able to beat others (other Bliztball teams) with ease. You do this to win character attacks for way further down the road....and Two...the leveling up system. It doesn't just level you up...you must progress through a 'sphere grid' lined up with 'attack, defense, special, abilities' and etc. All you must do is level up to move along the sphere grid. Easy once you get it! Truly! The story makes you sort of...tilt your head sometimes wondering what the hell is going on but all in all I loved this one. Lots of variety in character choices, things to do, and challenges to conquer. 🙂

FF7 is clearly the choice to start off with!

It has Chocobo racing! Enough said lol

Some handy little tips there from Rabbit however, well done 🙂

final fantasy 7 is just a gateway to final fantasy 7 on up or ff7 by itself

don't even bother with the rest

personally i only like final fantasy 4 (RYDIA!) and think final fantasy 7 sucks ass (and if you try and tell me sephiroth is the coolest villain ever i will locate your picture at this forum and find your location and hunt you down with my m16a2*)

but even i tell people ff7 is the only ff7 worth bothering with when it comes to mainstream and when talking to people who otherwise wouldn't bother with rpgs

*i may just deface your picture instead and showcase it if that's seen as a more viable/less expensive option

i must mention about the first main heroine part is that final fantasy 6, if counted, could have been that instead, despite its insane freedom at the second half of the game, and number 5 sported one at the beginning (lenna) but those are pretty uncertain

and i assume you are only referring to the final fantasy series, or otherwise i might be forced to bring up wild arms 3

ok, i finally got FF 1. for those who've played it, which 4 characters should i start with?

Cool...you should have the knight character, white mage, black mage, and red mage....they offer the best overall play. well rounded fighting with some well rounded magic skills...its my fave combo with the knight first, red, white, and then black in terms of fighting order. Hope it helps...

ya, i'm mostly playing FF3 for SNES. i think it's the exact same thing as FF 6, but not japanese, it's english.

it's pretty addicting. hopefully i can get FF7 soon enough.

the nes and snes series got all screwed up because square decided not to release ffII in america. For the snes version we got fffII which is really Iv in japan.

hmmm.... so ff3 is the only one in english?

is any of the other japanese ones any good?

I have all three of the first ones in english... 1 is absolutely solidly hard lol, especially if you dont level up properly throughout the game. It's good if you want a classic challenge. Personally, I'm a story lover rather than gameplay lover, so i think 6, 7 and 8 are the golden age, 7 being the peak, and ive played 'em all. I think this because:
7 has the perfect balance between good/bad graphics, good/bad dialogue lol, and AMAZING music played on crappy MIDI sounds heh, so that you can enjoy it as a game but you still have to use your imagination a lot, like an interactive book. It also has an awesome foreground/background story in general. Its incredibly easy, which is kind of annoying, but as i say, i love the story more that the gameplay. And I reiterate, the music is AMAZING. Nobuo Uematsu is an undisputed genius. Also, this game was, and few can deny it, somewhat of a revolution. It took everything further. Play it, and you're playing part of video game history. And on a lighter note the sub games rock! lol snowboarding, submarine battles, chocobo racing, motorbike slashathons and a few more random ones all await you.
6 is the most epic, not in graphics and sound obv, but in story. I won't spoil it for you, but take my word for it 😉. Again, the music, FANSTASTIC, though the sounds are worse. The story line splits, and you get to choose which one you play out first (awesome idea!) in a very non linear way. Definitely more of a good game challenge wise than 7, but without quite such classic characters.
8 is like the relationship between 6 and 7 reversed; the graphics are far better, the music sounds much better in terms of technology/acoustic affect, but It is the easiest of the series without doubt, and the characters are a bit cliche (especially squall) and the main villian is thrown in so badly towards the end that it kind of sucks. The whole Squall Rinoa thing (as you'll discover if you play the game) is also quite cheesy. Not that i dont love the story of course, i do, hence why i love the game, but compared to 6 and 7 i feel its weak. Be warned, the card game may obsess you. Oh and... The music RULES!!! AGAIN!!!!
anyway, that's my two sense. *Cannot wait for Advent children!!!!!!!!*

Alright. RPG's... Get a SNES emulater, whichever one you like...

Chrono Trigger
Seiken Denesetsu 2
Final Fantasy 6

That's the holy trinity of SNES RPG's. Also, try Earthbound, the Dragon Quest series, Breath of Fire 1 and 2 (more if you can find) Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen if you like challange, and Super Mario RPG.

as a musician myself

mitsuda > uematsu
kikuta > uematsu

this is as far as square musicianship is concerned

now, this can get confusing. i have been using an SNES emulator to play FF 3 on SNES. but with all the confusion, FF6 is really in Japanese and is the exact same game as FF 3 in english, so have i been playing the English FF 6 that everyone has been saying? get's confusing...

been going in circles trying to get a PSX emulator AND FF 7, i've finally given up unless someone can help.
