Since June 2014 we have had 84 cases of rocks being thrown through windshields in Austin, most of them on I-35 between about 10 pm and 6 am. In one case a young man suffered a traumatic brain injury and will need around the clock care the rest of his life.

There's a $10,000.00 reward offered, so maybe that will do it. If or when these lowlifes are caught they should face attempted murder charges for every incident. That's my opinion anyway. Anyone had that happen to them? It happened to me back in the 80s in Houston. I was on a surface street and didn't wreck my car, so I turned around and tried to catch the creep. Might be just as well I didn't. I was a lot younger then and it would not have been pretty.

I'm sorry. 🙁 My mom had that happen to her a few years back. A couple teens on the side of the road in a residential area.Thankfully, she wasn't hurt.

Thanks Bethan. In my case it was so long ago, had to pay for a windshield but you move on. Sorry about you mother, I'm glad she wasn't hurt. I think about the young guy I mentioned, think he was around 30 and a family man. Now, he and his family have lost so much...

I just hope they catch the human debris doing this and put them away for a very long time.

A few years back, and I don't recall where, someone did that, and it killed a woman in the passenger seat. Don't think they ever caught the bastard(s) either. These folks think it's so funny - hope it happens to them.

Some states use the phrase "depraved indifference" in the law to cover situations like this. If somebody dies from such an incident, it should be homicide (murder) by depraved indifference to human life. I would say at least 25 years in prison is appropriate.

If nobody dies, then it should still be a felony, punishable by several years in prison.

Good fucking god... In high school, I dated a girl whose sister-in-law's boyfriend who dropped a cinder block off a freeway bridge into a car that killed the driver. And that idiot, she was a typical dumb-as-rocks high schooler, stayed with the kid and defended him after conviction and everything. The dumb shit idiots even referred to themselves as the BKC, short for Bridge Killing Crew. Needless to say, I really hated those assholes.

Wow. The only thing that comes to mind is sociopaths.

I'm thinking "electric chair".

I used to live on Fort Hood, and made that I-35 drive quite regularly. Scary shit man I hope they catch the fuckers and make examples of them.

I'm staying off I-35 until they catch this creep or creeps. I do that most of the time anyway but yeah, they can lock them up and throw away the key far as I'm concerned. Oh, and since my first post the reward is up to $25,000. That might loosen some lips.

Just an update, an arrest was made this morning after two people witnessed a creep throw at rock at a passing car. The fear is this might be a copycat since all the other attacks have been at night. We should know something soon.

I'm bumping this thread to announce that APD has arrested the suspect in the majority of these cases. Two suspected copycats are also in custody, with a third arrest expected at any time. We can now drive on I-35 and feel a little safer tonight. Oh, here's a charming little factoid: The primary suspect was charged with sexual assault of a child a few years ago. That's still working its way through the court system.

It should be legal to beat them. I have never understood why someone would think that is funny.

The primary suspect seems to be a mad at the world type. He was well known for showing up at city hall with his rants and raves. And I love how they caught the lowlife. This cretin threw a rock at a marked UT Police car, which happened to have the dash cam on. That was pretty early in this, and the rock missed so he didn't report it. But he finally told the higher ups and they were able to recover the footage. After that if was a quick arrest. That putz had been a suspect anyway it turns out but they couldn't pin anything on him. They also noticed he reported a lot of the incidents soon after they happened, and stayed on the scene acting like a concerned citizen. I hope they bury this creep under a prison, he never needs to take another free breath.

Oh, they are also talking about at least one attempted murder charge. Just a little icing on the cake.

Just like in hide-and-seek.....you can hide for a while, one way or another, but eventually you will be found (one way or another). Hope they through the book - I mean a rock - at him...them.

Even before the rock incidents became a thing, I've always avoided I-35 in Austin like the plague. The city was poorly planned. There's an urban legend that one of the main planners of the city got so despondent over his abject failure, he committed suicide. I haven't been able to confirm this, though.

Lesson learned - when planning a city, think twice about building it around an existing Interstate Highway.

Amen on that. The transportation infrastructure in this city is a nightmare. Hell, it was antiquated 20 years ago and I don't see it getting any better. Never heard about that city planner but it would not surprise me.
