They do it by removing all 6 of the original 6 cards.

The original 6 are: 7 of clubs, 8 of diamonds, 6 of hearts, 8 of clubs, 7 of diamonds, 6 of spades.

The five at the bottom are: 7 of hearts, 6 of clubs, 8 of hearts, 7 of spades, 6 of diamonds.

None of the original cards is pictured at the bottom. 😛

Correct. It's a matter of perception. If you're not paying attention, since the cards look similar, they fool you into thinking your card's been "removed." And the worst part is, I fell for it! 😛 Thanks, CQ, that's a good link. 😀
