Tickle torture in history

Hey,

I was wondering if they were any good sites, books or article magazines which deals with tickling torture in history. I'm talking true history and not invented history also know as stories.

You might find something in books on the Marquis de Sade, but probably very little.

Sorry to burst any bubbles here but tickle torture actually being used in history has never been supported by a shred of real evidence.(Mind you the same goes for the existence of Christ and look how popular that is!)

KJ has pretty much defused the debate on historical tickling as a form of torure and I have to say that I believe him.If anyone was going to find proof on this, with his background of renfaires, it woulda been him.

KJ did apparently find a bit, in China and in France as I recall -- but nothing much in either.

Most of the stories one hears as "historical" aren't. The much circulated "diplomat's report" from the court of Catherine the Great is fiction (although more mainstream rumor says she did like to tickle her lovers; it shows up in a film about her, I gather). The "diplomat" who supposedly wrote this report never existed. Likewise, there is not a shred of evidence that in medieval or colonial days people were tickled in stocks (remember also that the vast majority of those stocked were men). Nobody was tickled at Salem, whatever rumors float around, either for interrogation or punishment. There's also the stories about Simon de Montfort, but I've never seen those confirmed in any reliable source.

Say what one will about Kujman (and lord knows, if it can be said, it has been), I do think his research is accurate.

True UNO, very true indeed. I think the France one was something to do with goats but the end result was the skin falling off the victim's feet because it was nearly torn by a mixture of the rough goat's tongue and repeated applications of saline soloution. That was more pain on sensitive skin than specific tickle torture. I've also heard about the China thing, but as far as I know it's limited to an unconfirmed report of Marco Polo about it happening in the court of the Dragon in China. Kurt never managed to prove it as far as I know. I might be mis-quoting the man, but I think that was the case.

I think you're right about the French case. In China, I think he had one documented case where two servants (one male, one female) were tickled on the feet, as part of a far more extensive and vicious series of attacks culminating in death. Not quite what people here have in mind, I think (and hope).

Of course there was tickle torture!

If you are in germany, visit the crime museum in Rothenburg on the river Tauber. You can make a tour there. When I went there with my class, the touleader told us about tickle torture with goats.

I never wanted to be a goat so much in my life!
