Tickling in ancient Rome?

I just found this drawing in a tickling art section, and along with the picture it tells of how women who were going to be in the brothels of ancient Rome were subjected to tickle torture "to break their spirits". Would anyone happen to know if theres any truth to this, or if its just a story the artist made up to go along with his drawing? Thanks.
