As some of you know, I took a trip to the ER a few days ago because of a kidney stone attack. I had a follow up apointment with a urologist -guess that's how it's spelled- this afternoon and after a bit of talking he had me go sit in a waiting room. After 10 minutes or so some lady in her mid to late 40s (not hot and sexy. Just some old lady) came along to take my X-Rays. She had something in her hand and I got a little nervous and said "You're not gonna stick anything in me are you?" To which she replied "No. I just need you to lay down on this table.) So, I got on the table which I felt was a little too small as my big ol' feet hung over the edge and I had to struggle to keep my sandals from falling off. Soon came the part where they start messing around with your hips to determine where exactly to position the camera. She started touching my left hip and I about jumped off of the table with a "GGHH-HEEE!" Once I'd settled back down, she told me to move to the right a little and tried to help by grabbing each side of my hips to which I replied "HA HA HA HA HA!!" while straining to stay still. She got cracked up and said something about "I think you're enjoying this a little too much." to which I, still giggling replied "No-ho-ho-ho!" She then poked me in the left side, saying "Tickle tickle" and I said "Plea-hea-hease do-ho-hon't!" So she had me grab my hip with my own hand to make the bone visible to see where to set the camera lens. For the next 5 minutes I had this funny smile on my face that wouldn't go away and I genuinly felt happy like someone who had just seen a really good comedy but, there was no arousal which is kind of strange for me. :weird:

What a cool experience! you gotta love those moments. Sometimes, they don't work, but for the most part, they set the patient at ease. As a newly crowned DOCTOR ("Yay me!"), I find that a very fun way to connect with my pediatric patients.

I mean, just today, I had this most adorable little girl come in with some belly pain, and just feeling yucky. She was of course very mopey, being sick and having to go to the doctor. I remember how my professor used to ask if pressing on their tummy tickled; I did the same, and let me tell you, the smile on this girl's face as I tickled her was so precious YOU would have MELTED!

She just had some stomach flu, nothing serious, but she gave me a big ole hug when she found out she needed no shot. I mean, there's gotta me something to that.

Peace!

Congrats on your new profession...an honorable, challenging, and vital one, indeed!!! Congrats!!! We need more docs like you in the world...

Almost every time I've gone to the doctor, I've gotten tickled...dunno why...just happens...either they are pressing on my abdomen, or someone messes with my feet...or puts the stethoscope on my ribs...oy...gotta love doctors...

I'm a PT student right now...getting my doctorate...but I've found, in my clinical skills class, someone, especially me, is always jumping/giggling because of all of the palpating we do. First week was the pelvis/hip region, this past week was the knee (and my classmate while adjusting a set of crutches to my height for an experiment tickled the crap out of me...I thought I was going to lose it...), and next week is the foot and ankle...I'm in SO much trouble...

Hey Camel
I could tell you had to be medically oriented to use the words abdomen and palpate in the same post.

I remember not too long ago, my classmates were practicing our clinical skillz on each other. And let me tell you, I never knew checking for swollen nodes could be so much fun.

Good luck with your clinicals.

Peace!

As a former cancer patient, THAT WAS TORTURE! But I managed to hold in my giggles and it wasnt that hard since I wasnt feeling good anyway..but when I got better and they still had to check omg...takes total concentration not to laugh. 😛
