I went to a bar last night with some friends. There were maybe 25 people there and it took 40 minutes to get our drinks, every round. We decided that the waitress didnt deserve a tip, and gave her a dollar. She apologized for the inconvience of having to change waitresses because her shift was over and that the next waitress was going to be right over. After waiting 45 minutes, we went to the bar to order. The bartender was like, "Yeah no one is going to serve you because you are all lousy tippers" We paid the tab and left. Then we called the manager, who told us, that if we would start tipping better, we would get better service. We couldnt get him to understand that a tip is a gratuity and that you dont deserve a tip at all if you give lousy service. And tipping isnt mandatory. He then told us that we didnt understand that the waitress only makes $2.30 an hour and that they have to pay the bartenders wages out of their tips. I cant figure out why he didnt care that he lost 10 customers, who each time they came through the door, dropped at least $200 EACH.

What a jackass!!

Lime, you must remember something I was told years ago......

***People deserve the right to remain stupid!!!***

So, take your friends and your 200.00 tab somewhere where you'll be treated better. For a 200 buck tab, I'll come and serve your drinks! 😎

Tipping and good service are both, in my opinion, mandatory. It's one thing for a waitress to give bad service, and it's another for the whole staff to endorse it, including the manager. Is he suggesting that the first waitress knew in advance that the tip was going to be low and that's why she gave such shitty service?

It was my 1st time there, so I have no idea how they tipped before. They said that for 3 people they left a $10 tip. I know someone who works there, and he said that they do have shitty service and that the manager told them to take their time serving us.

Maybe the manager should pay his staff more and give them a little more incentive to give quality service which would, in turn encourage customers to tip better......wow-what a novel friggin' concept!!!

You said this was your first time in the bar? How in the hell did they know the tip would be low? A table full of young people? Sounds like prejudice to me! For all they knew, you could've been Donald Trumps' long lost kid or something!

I always said, "the feet you step on today may be connected the the behind you may have to kiss tomorrow"!!!! You never know who you are in contact with everyday. Now he's out of the 200 bucks his cheap a** could've used to pay the entire staff's wages for that day! Just plain stupid!! :illogical

First of all, quit drinking so this doesn't happen again.

Second of all, maybe send a copy of what you posted here to the manager, HIGHLIGHTING that tips are optional and for good service. Also put in the letter about what KIS said about the staff getting paid better. If the accountaitn is a cheapskate, the staff is supposed to suffer, not the customers - it's the American way! I got badly treated at an art gallery recently. When I put it in writing, I got a reply and they are taking steps to correct the issue. Don't just sit and take it. Fight the man. Take action!! Sic Semper Tyrannus!!! Conjunction Junction, what IS your function???

After you send the letter to the managers (and get all your friends to sign it) send the same letter to the OWNER of the estblishment.

Obviously just goes with the trend of bad service that unfortunately people seem to encounter too frequently these days. Absolutely she didn't deserve a good tip if she was that terrible of a waitress and the fact that the manager backed her up, what an ass. I always tip probably more than I should if I feel the service was good, but unfortunately I've had several places, in particular restaurants, that have the crappiest service, and alot of times they don't care either. Makes no sense to me that they will lose customers this way but I guess not a damn thing anyone says is going to change that.

Unless the place was so crowded that somebody had to wait a long time to be served, there is no excuse for the rotten service you describe. The mangaer/staff were saying to you, "We don't want you here." So don't go back, they obviously aren't the only bar in town.

Okay....I'm a waitress! First off let me say...I'm not starting a war, just giving my opinion!
From the story that was told here....you said it took 40 mins for you to get your drinks....I don't know how crowded the bar was but I can imagine, on a Saturday night it was busy. You also said there were approx, 25 of you. In most places, the waitresses do not make the drinks, with that being said....the bartender/s makes the drinks for the whole place, if he/she is drowning in drink orders, most times waitresses have to wait for drinks.
So, yes I can see how this would be her fault and you shouldn't tip her.

Grrr---I JUST had this conversation with my sister in laws a couple of days ago! I live in the midst of many many casinos (with a Hard Rock Casino opening any day now to water down the waitress pool) and good wait staff are few and far between with all the cocktails, bartenders, busboys,...you name it! I believe in tipping when it's warranted.

My sister-in-law is a waitress and she seems to be under the assumption that she deserves a tip just for diong the job period. No mention of the QUALITY of the job...just DOING it seems to demand a tip in her eyes.

I explained to her that I have a job that earns me a base amount when I perform the demands of the client. (I'm self employed so my case is a little different, but not much...I still have to pay taxes, insurance, etc. from the gallery's till!) I further explained that when I do more than required, I get paid more.

She came COMPLETELY UNGLUED telling me how she had variables that affected her job. Like mine didn't! I knew when going into my line of work that my pay was a specific amount and so did she! If she wants more, she needs to work beyond the requirements to impress the paying public or change jobs.

Lime, if you had lousy service compared to other places that were able to provide better, then you were not obligated to tip. If the manager had a staffing problem, then HE should make up the difference to the employees. It's not the repsonsibility of the patrons to line the pockets of the staff when they aren't working as a well oiled machine.

So I called the BBB, because I thought it was illegal to refuse to serve based on the fact that one didnt tip enough, and the BBB rep. was like "No you cant file a complaint for that...just stop going there" I asked if there was someone else to report to, and she was like"No just us"

I'm glad that you called the BBB, even if they didn't help you. When I get lousy service from any business, I like to tell everybody about it.

Hey Lime, you and your friends should come to where I work. I'd give you great service with a little extra tickle bonus :couch:

This sounds so judgmental it makes me sick. How the hell does the manager know IN ADVANCE that you were going to be a lousy tipper. Is it like you have cheapskate stamped on your forehead? Give me a brake!! My rule on tipping in a restaurant or bar is that if the service is good, I give 20% of the tab. If the service is lousy, then I give 15%. What really galls me about that is that the manager promoted this by telling the waitress to "take her time" in serving the round of drinks. I'd send a letter, like oddjob said, to the owner. Go to the head not the ass. In this case, if it went to the latter, there might be mass confusion. It's a good thing assholes don't fly otherwise that would be an airport. In the meantime, just take your business elsewhere.

The manager made it clear that his daddy was the owner, so Im not sure how well that would go over. 🙁

In that case, never go back there. There are other bars. 😀

Since none of us were carded, weve decided to call liquor control and report them for serving underage persons :firedevil :firedevil :firedevil

That seems a little..petty, Lime, considering all you had was lousy service.

Take it from an "old school player", they should've carded them prior. They (Lime and crew) now have enough amunition to shut them down. It goes back to the lousy service. Had they (the bar) done right, she (Lime) still wouldn't be angry. She's gotten no resolution and has been blown off many times, so it escalates and they could very easily be shut down. It goes back to not respecting their youth-if they did, maybe it would be a different outcome!

The law in every state in the union is that people get carded in bars, no matter how old they look. I'm probably more than twice her age, and have been carded in convenience stores when purchasing beer/liquor. They should've done their job-now they've opened themselves for hell on a stick!

Pardon me while I search for an eye to cry out of on their behalf........

so...she has bad service, and in return shuts down there bar, costing people there jobs...yeah, thats not a little extreme.

if that is how they treat their clientele as standard practice, they might be shut down for another reason.

Limeoutsider tells me that in Pennsylvania they will be fined, not shut down, for serving underage people.

Yeah Yeah....close them down....it's probably a single mother supporting her children who gave you such bad service :couch:
