I hear people can't tickle themselves. But if a ticklish person tries to tickle themselves how does it feel? If you try to tickle your own foot, do you feel anything? Do you still feel the tickling but not react because your body knows it you? or does it feel like your not ticklish at all if you try to tickle yourself?
If a ticklish person keeps trying to tickle themselves would they make themselves less ticklish?

I don't sit down and say, "Okay - I'm gonna try to tickle myself today" but there have been times that I've tickled myself accidentally, but it's never been remotely similar to someone else tickling me. It's more of an annoying tickle. It does make me jerk, but never laugh.

I have found a way, but doesn't always work. Requires a fan and some nice, soft material. Also the motors tend to burn out!

It feels more scratchy than tickly. If I touch a particularly sensitive spot I will jump and flinch, but I don't laugh. I agree with Skippy, it feels annoying.

heh I've given it a go. People say it isn't possible to tickle yourself. This is somewhat incorrect. Over the past few years I've studied as much as I could on what makes tickling go round (even if I wasn't interested in it this way I would still be curious WHY tickling exists). Tickling is a nervous reaction. Either the person is not used to being touched in a spot or they are used to being tickled when being touched in a spot.

Example A) Person is never really touched around their abdomen or under their arms. Suddenly they have a bf/gf who starts tickling them there. As a nervous reaction they laugh because they are not used to this.

Example B) a person gets touched in a particular place quite often but either under certain circumstances (like them being tied up or the person who is about to touch them laughing maniacally or wiggling their fingers) or simply every time they get touched there it is to be tickled they will have the same reaction.

This said, the main reason you cannot tickle yourself is because you are pretty used to touching your own body in almost all places and you are completely aware of what sort of motivation is behind you being touched. No surprise, complete comfort and security... no nervous reaction.

Now, for me this isn't 100% true. Through my life I've never found a particular reason to handle the bottoms of my feet with my hands (they are kind of sensitive and usually the only times I've had to run my hands down them was to find some kind of injury). As such they are not even used to being touched by me and when I do touch them, I get a nervous reaction because I've trained myself to cringe whenever I do it (expecting to find injury). So when I run a finger down the bottom of my own foot, I can illicit the sensation (slightly) of being tickled. Enough to give myself a grin. Sadly this wonderful gift has been granted to a person who hates being tickled. :sarcasm: For the most part it is an irritating feeling. It can make me grin and ALMOST cause me some cough of a chuckle, but after my hand has been there more than 10 seconds my foot becomes rather used to it.

So the idea that you can't tickle yourself is based entirely on the concept that you've put your hands everywhere and are completely comfortable with placing your hands there.

When I run my fingernails over ticklish spots, it tickles just like if somebody else did it. What is different though, is the reaction. I don't laugh, and why would I....I can just stop doing it, and that's what usually happens.

I am the same way.. it is weird to tickle yourself accidentaly. There have been times when i have done it and you like what the heck and stop it right away. Then there are times when my nervs are firing off in a bad way and just my cat rubbing up against my leg or foot will drive me batty to where I just wanna drop kick her to get her away.

That is interesting Rhiannon.

So ticklish people can give themselves the tickling feeling and it still ticklish, but there is just no reaction....:typerhappy:

Exactly 🙂 I think the laughter is more or less a 'social' reaction. If there is nobody you can direct it to, it is not necessary.

One time I tried to tickle myself, just to test this. I'm very ticklish all over if someone else tickles me. As for the self tickling, when I tried to tickle my feet, I felt nothing. As for the stomach, I did try a brief self tickle on my belly, and it did feel ticklish. Not as ticklish as when someone else tickles me on the belly, but still, a definition ticklish sensation.

ok well try scraching your soles of your feet as if scraching an itch! see? its imposs to carry that on
I cant do that at all cos it tickles way to much
or how about featherlite with fingernails on ur tummy! hahaha omg

i can tickle myself in a way thats almost a normal reaction like when i scrub my feet with a pumice or scrub brush it tickles me so bad but i just endure it, and sometimes if i stroke my stomach toward my sides or my ribs with my nails laying in bed it tickles me to pull away
