Tom Carnagie, the Voice of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race for 60 years, passed away yesterday morning. Race fans knew his distictive voice and he came to be known as the authority in racing before the digital age entered The Speedway. Nothing excited me more as a race enthusiast as when Tom would announce over the track PA, " He's on it!' or "It's a new track record!" Back then you waited in the stands for Tom to inform you of the time and speed of each qualifying driver. I suppose you could say he was the Harry Carey of open wheel motor racing. He will be sorely missed around Gasoline Alley.

It can be said that Tom Carnagie was a big factor to why The Indy 500 was and still is The Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing.

The end of an era. The Brickyard will never be the same. R.I.P. Tom.
