Top 10 players in the MLB

Here's mine....

This list is based on one factor: "If I were a manager, who would I want most on my team this season?"

1. Albert Pujols
2. Alex Rodriguez
3. Vladimir Guerrero
4. Miguel Tejada
5. Roger Clemens
6. Gary Sheffield
7. Johan Santana
8. Randy Johnson
9. Manny Ramirez
10. Alphonso Soriano

EDIT: OK, if it's non-pitchers, Clemens, Santana, and Randy would get replaced in some order with Ichiro, Edmonds, and Beltran. I didn't include Bonds because he's not playing "this season", but if you asked this question at any time in the last 4 seasons or so, Bonds would have been #1, hands down.

Good list..

Here is mine, pitchers NOT included.

1. Bonds
2. Pujols
3. A-Rod
4. Iciro
5. Beltran
6. Jeter
7. Beltre
8. Vladdy
9. Rolen
10. Pudge

Actually, you didnt specify whether or not you wanted pitchers included, but since you said no pitchers in your second post, this is my list of top ten non pitchers.

1. Bonds (Even though he's not playing this year. Maybe the most feared hitter anywhere, as evidenced by 232 walks in 2004)

2. Albert Pujols

3. A-Rod

4. Ichiro

5. Vlad Guerrero

6. Carlos Beltran-darn good hitter, very productive

7. Manny Ramirez.

8. Jim Edmonds- a big homer threat, capable of extreme output

9. Scott Rolen

10. Jim Thome- Maybe some will disagree. Yes, he strikes out a lot, but he's also always good for 40-50 homers and 100-120 RBI's. A major hitter.

So, thats my list. A few different ones, but then again, we all have different perceptions of who is "best".

Mitch

What is the Criteria? I mean the top 10 this year? Top 10 in the last 10 years or the top 10 All-Time? I mean I am a student of the game and quite frankly I want to know how to answer such a Great Question. And it is a GREAT QUESTION.

George brings up a good point and I am going to take the position that Armpit Licker is asking about the current active players.

My choices are

David Ortiz- A very under rated hitter whp always performs in the clutch, just ask Joe Torre

A Rod- Just a great all around player who is a perennial 50/50 threat.

Jeter- Not only a great all around player, but a great guy to have in the clubhouse.

Roger Clemens- A throwback who can still bring it consistently at 96-98 MPH. The guy is 42 years old.

Carlos Beltran- A great offensive player

Chipper Jones- A certtified Mets killer, and I am a die hard Mets fan.

Barry bonds- Until her retires, how can you not include him on this list.

Pedro Martinez- Had some great years in boston including his performance in last years post season (esp vs, the Cards)

MIke Piazza- A furute hall of famer, who might be on a slight decine productivitywise, but still one of the best offensive catchers in the game.

Vlad- a 5 tool player. There is not too many of those around.

Mariano Rivera- One of the most dominant closers.

Yes, the top 10 best players in the MLB today.. I based mine off the last 3 seasons.

Giantsfan, I am guessing you forgot Pujols...?? Because there is noway you can't include him, even in the top 5... He continues to prove every year that he isn't a fluke, the guy is one of the best in the game, hands down.

Thank you for the clarification. I do appreciate it.

In no particular order we will start:

1.I am not a fan of his but you have to say Roger Clemens as he is getting better with age.
2.I am not a fan of his either but who can deny Greg Maddux who seems to cone under the radar with Clemens out there but has more wins than Roger and he came in the League 2 years later than Roger. I believe he has won 15 or more game 15 years in a row. A feat that has never been done before.
3.Barry Bonds as much as I don't like him or the STEROIDS controversy who can deny him? He was a Hall of Famer before the steroids so he is now.
4.Vladimir Guerrero is probably one of the best players this game has ever seen. He can run, he can hit for average, he can hit for power, excellent glove and a accurate cannon for an arm. When you think of 5 tool players Vladimir must be one of the first guys to think of. He will be a Hall of Famer as this rate of production. That is why the Mets passed on him. He was to good for them.
5.Manny Ramirez- one of the games most feared hitter. In a big spot who better than Manny to have at the dish with a bat in his hands. He too is also a Hall of Famer. See a pattern people?
6.Mike Piazza- he too is a Hall of Famer. One of the most fear hitters in the game.Even now at 36 Mike continues to hit MOON-SHOTS out of ballparks everywhere. He hit 4 homeruns last week that are circling Jupiter now. Despite age I want Mike Piazza in a big spot at the plate. In his prime nobody wanted to see him hitting if you were an opposing pitcher and you don't now.
7.Alex Rodriguez will probably break Henry Aaron's record for career homeruns. Alex is an outstanding all-around player who I believe will eventually pick up where he left off in Texas. Some 1st year Yankees have a hard time adjusting. He is at I believe 11 homeruns right now and we are not yet through 25% of the season. A-Rod is another Hall of Famer right now at 382 lifetime homeruns. And he still has 6 years left on that contract after this year.WOW
8.Miguel Tejada- is coming into his own now. Overshadowed by the that division that has the Yankees and Red Sox, this Oriole could help the Orioles stay in contention. Has great bat control and knowledge of the "zone". He may not be recognized now but the baseball writers will acknowledge in about 20 years that Miguel Tejada is a Hall of Fame ballplayer.
9.Albert Pujols- is hitting .330 lifetime after only 4 seasons. He is hitting .325 this year as we speak. Has tremendous power and great knowledge of the strike zone. He is a Hall of Famer without question. If there is a game on the line there is nobody in baseball I want up in that spot than Albert Pujols. He is a player for youngesters getting into the game to look after. He has a smooth as silk swing and does everything right in the batters box.
10.Randy Johnson- another power pitcher. What an incredible career. Might not get to 300 wins but had he not been on those bad Mariners teams in the early 90's and those horrible Diamondback teams recently he might already be there. The most intimidating pitcher of our generation.
I left some great ones out but I basically went position by position except for 2nd base( couldn't think of any). But as you can tell I basically went with guys I thought were Hall of Fame inductees. What do you think? i would love to know.

You got me Licker. Puljous is definitely a good player who I forgot about. The thing is, I don't see Puljous as much as some of the other players I mentioned but that is no excuse

Is this all the responses? Come on baseball fans, this is a great question. Keep this thread alive.

Top 10...tough and arguable but I would put these guys in the top 10:

1.) Bonds (even though he prob did steroids)
2.) A-Rod (has a lot of physical ability)
3.) Clemens (amazing what he is doing at his age)
4.) Tejada (not talked about enough)
5.) Guerrero (awesome player)
6.) Jeter (unbelievable, all around, smartest player in baseball)
7.) Santana (of the Twins, pitcher, had an amazing year last year, and going into this year doing great)
8.) Rivera (can't keep out Mariano, best closer of all time)
9.) Pujols (St. Louis, a killer hitter)
10.) Pedro (Martinez, Mets looking like the old Pedro, dominant)

It's hard to pick 10, I could come up with 10 more and argue them over these 10 but these are the ones after thinking about I came up with. I like the "overall" player who doesn't just hit a lot of home runs, but hits for average, knows the game, plays defense, and is clutch.

It is definately arguable but that is what makes baseball fun. Is there really a wrong answer? Baseball players and stats are always arguable. That is what makes the game so intriguing. That is why baseball is still the best sport there is. It's history and it's colorfulness comes to life whether you talk about the game today or 20 years ago or back in the 30's or whenever. Baseball just lights you up as Tom Hanks says in the movie A League Of Their Own. So there really is no wrong answer. Giving reasons is a great way to state your case. Let's hear more. :xpulcy:

Wow, how can no one mention Bobby Abreu? Look at his numbers people. He's putting up an MVP-type season and he's done it for the last few years. Let's see if I can throw a top-ten list together. I'm doing this list based on active players and not discriminating based on whether or not they took steroids or not.

1) Barry Bonds
2) A-Rod
3) Albert Pujols
4) Vladimir Guerrero
5) Carlos Beltran
6) Miguel Tejada
7) Bobby Abreu
8) Miguel Cabrera
9) Alfonso Soriano
10 Todd Helton

Bobby Abreu is one of the most underrated players in the game. In the meantime, sometimes you can't put a top 10 together without leaving out some superstars. That is a fact. I believe that Beltran( who plays for my team the Mets ) is not yet achieved that status but almost everyone has included him on their list. I love Beltran and the way he plays the game but he in my opinion is not top 10 yet. He is being paid like on but he is not there yet. But that is what is fun about baseball Amish is that nobody is wrong. We all have reasons. Abreu is one of the great 5 tool players in the league right now. Great choice Amish.
