BoooHaHaHaHaaa!

1.Ian Paice (Deep Purple) Sorry Bonham Fans! This guy combines speed, power, dexterity, andFiness. He inspired me to take up drums when I was 13.I recommend spending extra to get the 3 CD "Live in Japan" (Not Made in Japan). The sound is exceptional for '72 and it is the best miked drum kit sound I've ever heard!
2.John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)Nobody hits the drum harder than John.I was not a fan at first but he grew on me.He had one of my drum set-ups (5 Piece set with 2 Tympani's and a gong). If you can ever find live bootleg material from Detroit '73,get it!-"Dazed and Confused"
in Detroit is amazing!
3.Bill Bruford (King Crimson '72-'74,'80-'84,'95-97)The man with the most complex time signatures I've ever heard. He was the first drummer for Yes but did his best work with King Crimson.
4.Billy Cobham (Mahavisnu Orchestra '72-'73)The fastest
5.Carl Palmer (ELP) Brought a sense of "orchestration drumming" to the Rock world. He really sucked as a "rock drummer" in the band Asia.

I have to leave at the moment, but I'll try to think of the the next 5 and get back to you later!

No one's mentioned Neal Peart from Rush? :wow:

Mick Fleetwood????????

.......A great drummer? I think not. He may have had many skills about which I am not qualified to comment, but I dont think he has ever been accused of being a great drummer.

Those of us who know a thing or two will tell you that the greatest drummer of all time was and still is Buddy Rich. As a pure, simple exponent of what is possible on the instrument he has no equal.

Danney Carey from Tool would be one of the greatest and most innovative current drummers in my opinion.

Also Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater is a legend.

And as a side note, Animal from the muppets is actually a very good choice. Though I can't remember the name of the drummer at the moment, the drummer Animal was modeld from was one of the greatest and most innovative drummers from the Swing Era.

And while I am at it......

.....I really need to put a word in for the lady who played drums for me untill I had to stop playing because of my health problems, Caroline B. She was without question the best drummer I have ever worked with. Superb technique, when ever you looked round at her you hardly see anything moving, the back straight as a rod, all the movement came from the wrists only. No grimacing, no sweating, no learing at cameras, no tatoos, no stripping to the waist (pity about that) no crying for mommy if you showed her some written music to read. Wonderfully creative, intuative, sympathetic.

And the most important quality of all. SHE KEPT PERFECT TIME. Most drummers STILL dont know that this is their most important job.

They were all playing for Spinal Tap.

But,,,,

They keep on disintegrating

Not all of them disintegrated, you know! One died in a bizzare gardening accident that the authorities said was better left unsolved. Another choked on vomit. They never found out whose vomit it was...as there's really no way to dust for vomit.

Ok, my list:
1) Neil Peart
2) Neil Peart
3) Neil Peart
4) Neil Peart
5) Neil Peart
6) Carl Palmer
7) Bill Bruford
8) John Fishman
9) John Bonham
10) Lars Ulrich

Didn't another Spinal Tap drummer spontaneously combust, Dave? All they found was a little globule on the drum riser.

Drew

1) John Bonham - Zepplin
2) Alex Van Halen

peace out,
daddy

John Bonham is another one of my fav drummers. I love the song "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin.

In no particular order:

John Bonham
Keith Moon
Charlie Watts
Lars Ulrich
Tommy Lee
Randy Castillo

That's all I can think of right now.

Maybe not the best drumming ever, but some of the best drumming I've heard in a single song is on LOVE's song, '7 & 7 Is', off their "Da Capo" album, if I'm not mistaken. (I've heard it's actually a couple of guys drumming in tandem to keep that beat going without a break)

If you want to hear something good, then...check out Rush's latest release Feedback. All cover tunes, and one of them is Neil Peart and Co. doing 7 & 7 Is. Excellent stuff and very true to the original.

Oh, yeah, Dave! I heard that at a listening post at one of the music stores around here. The only thing missing from the Rush version that the Love version has is the explosion and few seconds of the slow bluesy music. And if any ladies feel left out of this site, a group known as "The Velvet Underground" had a female drummer. (MO Tucker was her name) She was one of the first female drummers I heard of. The Honeycombs ("Have I The Right") had one even earlier and later on there was Karen Carpenter.

Maybe I missed it, but did anyone mention Phil Collins? He was pretty good. I mean...he..

played percussion and stuff and...

never mind. 🙄

Phil's drumming on "In The Air Tonight" was outstanding! I read an interview where he said he played percussion on George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album. I believe George didn't use any of Phil's contribution by the time of the album's release.

Phil Collins was a great drummer in the early days of Genesis!!🙂 ....................But good at Nothing Else!!😡

Perhaps that's why George didn't use any of Phil's percussionwork on "All Things Must Pass". You're right, though. I loved "Selling England By The Pound".
