Trade Deadline Deals

With baseball's second half having already started, it will be interesting to see what deals are made by teams to bolster themselves before the trade deadline on July 31.
I have heard rumors of the Mets getting another starting pitcher, and perhaps another hitter. My Braves, if they dont fall completely out of wild card contention after this upcoming trip, are in desperate need of bullpen help. The Yankees always need pitching.
Although the Mets GM has denied that such a deal is even in the talking stages, I have read rumors on both the Mets, and Braves, websites, which muse about the idea of Braves pitcher John Smoltz being traded to the Mets. New York could probably use another starting pitcher for the playoffs, but it would seem that unless the Mets could give Atlanta a major package of players, that the Braves just wont give away their best pitcher. Although Atlanta has had a poor season this year, and may well not make the playoffs, with Mike Hampton returning next year, and his capability of winning 15 games at least if healthy, the Braves would have a pretty solid big three in Smoltz, Hudson, and Hampton for next year. It wouldnt seem they would break that up, unless someone offered them an incredible deal for Smoltz, or maybe Hudson.
So, what do people think might happen over the next two weeks in terms of trades? Let's talk about it.

Mitch

Braves will not deal a package of peanuts to the Mets if they thought it would help to the Mets. :jester: The Braves will probably look to be buying as oppose to selling. That being said, Mets need a starting pitcher. The Yankees need starting pitching and Sheffield and Matsui to come back healthy. The Reds addressed their bullpen issues with their trade with Washington. The Cardinals need starting pitching. The Dodgers need 2 bats. The Padres need 2 bats. San Francisco needs Barriod to be 10 years younger. The Brewers need another starting pitcher ( I really like this Brewers team ). The Astros need anything that would help their offense. The White Sox need their starting pitchers to do what they did last year. Or they will need to get another starter. The Tigers might need a bat ( though this team is about as complete a team in baseball ). The A's need to help their offense with a couple of bats.

But here is a question, with the AL West and NL West team all still in contention, with all teams with the exception of the Cubs and the Pirates involve in the wildcard and with still 3 teams involve in the AL East race and the AL Central race being a two team race, who is going to make any trades??? There are about 7 teams not in contention ( if you believe that the Twins are still in then there are only 6 teams ) and that is it. That does not give you much of a pool to pick from.

Atlanta needs bullpen help, desperately. Also, knock on wood, with them playing well right now, if they can continue to, and climb up in the wild card race, they can do something. Right now, their offense looks hot as blazes, but I think they can use more pitching. I read an article on their website which says that they have $6 mil to spend to rent someone for the rest of the season. That means that they could technically trade for someone with a $12 to $14 mil contract that expires this year, and pay a pro rated amount for a decent player, for the rest of the season. I'd love to see them get a high priced closer. They need someone who can shut it down in the ninth. They have a shameful amount of blown saves this year.
There is two weeks to the trade deadline, and I have a strong feeling that their GM, John Scherholtz, a genius at trade deadline deals, will be doing something significant in the next two weeks.

Mitch

That is why the Mets and Braves will not be trading with each other anytime soon. The Braves are still in it. The Mets getting Smoltz is DEFINATELY a pipedream.

No way Smoltz is a Met, the braves would ask for Milledge and Pelfrey, not going to happen. The Mets need someone like Zito or Willis but that won't happen. I think we should just stand pat.

I have heard that Scott Kazmir might be available. I know it would take a TOP prospects, but how often can you get left-handed 23 ACE ?

Kazmir is NOT available. WOW!!! You guys could believe anything. :idunno: Explain why Tampa would put Kazmir in a trade being that the guy is 23, lefthanded and you will NOT have to pay him anything over the next 3 years??? They wouldn't is the answer.

Again , you couldn`t be more wrong. Tampa Bay has in the past tried to drum up trade offers.

I doubt the Mets will be getting John Smoltz from the Braves. Atlanta would not trade him to the Mets. I think the Mets have another starter sitting right in their bullpen in Aaron Heilman..or even Darren Oliver. They can go out and get another reliever easier than a starter......I was getting a kick out of the sports reporters when they were counting the Yankees out during the All Star break....half a season left and they are saying the YANKEES weren/t making the playoffs...THE YANKEES. 3 games back..yeah they;re toast lol
They could use an arm too but at thius point of the season just about every team is trying to bolster their pitching. I don't know who will wind up where but it should be an interesting couple weeks...maybe Jason Schmidt to the Mets???

Are the Yanks gonna pickup any starting pitching? Because Johnson is longer a staff ace!

How about the Fighten Phils?

I thinkof all the teams out there they have the most to offer...Stand Pat may never pull a triiger on anything but I think he is ridiculous not to. Abreu is going to command some talent for trade and with too many outfielders Thats a good start...I think the Yankees will give up Randy Johnson and possibly a catcher in their system for Abreu. Now I know Randy Johnson isnt having his best year but, he is more of a NL pitcher then AL just due to the hitting talent in that league...I think in Philly he could go about 8 and 2 for the remainder of the season if not better...the young pitching who can be traded for some other established starters could happen as well but I dont know how long they are willing to hold onto them...

Braves GM John Scherholtz does it again, baby! Woo Hoo! I just came home, and went to Braves.com, and found out that he has acquired closer Bob Wickman from the Indians. Wickman is a bit old, at 37, but can still do solid work in the ninth inning, and should greatly aid the Braves in closing games. What is best, is Wickman only makes 2 mil for the rest of the season, leaving Atlanta with $4 mil in payroll to spend. With the Braves only five games out of the wild card, and hitting out of their minds, if they get any starting pitching at all, and can get another arm or two in the pen behind Wickman, they have a great chance to make up ground in the wild card, and hopefully snare it.
John, you're a genius. Hopefully, this will lead us to playoff appearance number 15 in a row.

Mitch

speaking from a Mets fans point of veiw getting Wickman will not help you win the East, The Mets are too good this year. However, you may win the wild card, know the Mets luck they win the East, Braves win the Wild Card and in the 2nd round the Braves beat the Mets in 7 games.

Angel, I dont think Atlanta will win the East. We are too far back. I do think that although it will be an uphill climb, if we play well, we have a legitimate shot at the wild card. We are five back now, but have many teams to beat out. Hopefully, we can play well the second half, as we have been lately, to snare the wild card.

Mitch

The way I see it playing out is the Mets win the East, Then the Braves win the Wild Card. The way Chipper and Andrew have been hitting the ball a WC spot is not out of the question

I agree with you, Angel. Five out of the wild card. Wickman joins the team tonight in Philly. Atlanta should be able to make up that five games if they play as they should. It could well be Mets-Braves in the NLCS this year.

Mitch

Considering the injuries the Yanks have indured this year they are certainly and most definitely a contender. The Yanks will probably do something in regards to pitching, or try to depending on what is out there. Brian Cashman has said repeatedly this year that he does not want to trade top prospects unless some wonderful unbelievable deal comes along. The Yanks are still in decent position and have a lot of games left with Boston and the East, it is still a big race in the AL East....never count the Yanks out! And who doesn't love the young guys in for the injuries right now...

It amazes me that I am wrong about this and not you. You didn't answer the question either. So I will ask this question, what offers have the Devil Rays drummed up that involved Kazmir? The guy is a 22 year old lefty. A team would control for the next 3 years. If Tampa REALLY wanted to get rid of him they could have already dumped him on another team by now. Think of the teams that need starting pitching that are contending, the Yankees,Red Sox,Blue Jays, White Sox,the Mariners, the Rangers, the Giants, the Padres, the Dodgers, the Rockies, the Diamondbacks, the Cardinals, the Braves, the Brewers and the Mets. Yet the Devil Rays have no takers??? Why is that??? Because he is not on the market. He makes the league minimum and Tampa a salary control type team WOULD NOT get rid of a player who is making league minimum. But, of course, I am wrong.

If you followed the game closely, you would have seen last year he nearly got traded, only because the RAYS WANTED 3 top prospects for him was the reason he wasn`t.

Also I have friends that are in baseball & football scouting departments. So when one of them tells me behind the scenes rumours floating around, I will believe them over you. So IT DOES SEEM YOU ARE WRONG YET AGAIN!!!!

Thats what scares me as a Mets fan, If you win the WC and we win the East and meet in the NLCS I could see the Braves beat the Mets in 7 games, can't you?

Well when you can tell me who these scouts are Flock then I will believe you. Until then, I am going to believe that you are CLUELESS!!! Nobody is even talking about the trading of Kazmir except you. Why hasn't FOX or ESPN talked about this potential trade of a 22 year old stud? I keep hearing the usual suspects like Soriano, Livan Hernandez and such. But yet they are not talking about Kazmir. Can you explain to me why is that Flock?

It really simple, even for the likes of you. There are about 35 to 40 speculative trade rumors that no one knows about except for those in the business. There is no media around to pick up on these, so they have not been leaked. ITS REALLY THAT SIMPLE.

Like you would know any of these scouts names , puhlease....When I know you are wrong, I will call you on it , simple as that!

But considering Kazmir is a 22 year old star, ( not 23 like you said so you were WRONG ) that is the kind of leak that gets out. I mean I heard about Aubrey Huff possible being traded before he was traded yet not Kazmir. Funny that the Kazmir trade has leaked to you and not to ESPN. I wonder why??? So the media doesn't know that Kazmir is being traded and you out the in Texas know what is going on in Tampa, Florida. I am a New Yorker and I know when the Bull has gone to the bathroom and I believe that he just did in Texas. It is that SIMPLE!!!
