I found these on the Getty Images site: Five different photos from the famous “Brothers Karamazov “ tickling scene with Gloria Pall. 4 of them appear to be unused extras never printed in the 1950s Life magazine story. I have never seen these! The quality looks like they are amazing, and I don’t think most of these have been seen by the public since 1958.

Sadly for us, I can’t download them without the copyright-protecting watermark graphics obscuring them.

You can buy these photos from Getty w/o the watermarks, but Getty gets really specific about where they are going to be displayed, etc. and I’m sure they would end up being very costly. About the cheapest I found was around $195 to buy the publishing rights to one unobscured photo.

Since the photographer died in 2005 the copyright fortunately will expire in about 73 years or so. Enjoy them for what they are worth.

Cool! There's also a video clip of those images in the Mainstream Section.

The tickling-scene from The Brothers Karamazov is one of my all-time favorite mainstream scenes. To see these never-before-seen pics is pretty , damn COOL!

Thanks for posting these , Oddjob0226!

I'm glad you liked them - they blew me away! Sorry about the watermark over top.

I'm thinking since this was a Life Magazine shoot, and on a major movie set..... the photog had to have taken more than just five shots of this scene (??) Might there be more vaulted away somewhere?

Now I'm bumping up this old thread for a reason...

I went back to Getty Images and found 2 things. One, it looks a couple of new pictures have been added of this famous tickling scene.

Secondly, the annoying watermarks are now smaller and obscure the photos less. Still not desirable, but better than they were.

I understand that there is a graphics program that can remove digital watermarks. True? Anyway, the update w/ new pic & smaller watermarks---

Well , alright ... I guess we'll let it slide.

THIS TIME! 😛

So, what was the deal with this scene, exactly? I saw the clip, but not the movie. What was the purpose of it in context to the film?

I was about to ask. That same question. Also, I can remove the watermark and improve the quality some what. If you all are willing to wait a while for them.

Oh heck yeah! Thank you for doing this. We will be indebted to you.

Now as far as the context goes, since this scene isn't in the book, I belive it is just supposed to show the decadence of the father. He's a drunken old carouser (wine, women, song.....) with both a somewhat sadistic side and lecherous side, this tickling bit underlining both.

When it comes to character development A few pictures are worth a few thousand words (& helped shorten the film).
