BEIJING (Reuters) - In a bid to spruce up the city's image, authorities in China's Nanjing are banning taxi drivers who are bald, wear their hair too long, have moustaches or wear too much make-up, media said Tuesday.

The new rules are part of a 10-point plan to smarten up Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu province, ahead of October's 10th National Games which will draw viewers from across the country, the Chinese news Web site www.sina.com.cn said Tuesday, citing the Nanjing Morning Post.

"Male taxi drivers cannot have long hair or strange hairstyles, cannot be bald and cannot grow moustaches or goatees," the report said.

"Women drivers must not use too much make-up and should wear appropriate clothes."


Venray - I think we're in trouble! 🙁 Anyone know where I can buy a good toupee? I mean geeze! I've had my mustache longer than some of our fellow TMFers have been around! To say nothing of my plans to retire to China and drive a hack!

They do, but we're only permitted to be tickled when stopped at red lights. If we hit a railroad crossing with a 250-car CSX train going by, we're in big trouble! 😱

Humor aside, the behavior of that dictatorial government in this instance is equivalent to racism. Racism itself has an aesthetic element to it, that is, the sense that people with light skin look good in privileged positions and people with dark skin look good in servile ones, and in China--a country where everybody is of the same "racial" heritage--the government and society can still find other ways of bestowing privilege on some and second-class citizenship on others. Making uniform quality standards out of people's physical appearances is simply bigotry, and it's obviously rife in that regime.

And to think I thought the municipalities in which I was licensed back in the day had too many rules!

In a perfect world, I would've had rules in my taxi concerning the passengers. 1) If pressed by the need to have a conversation with the driver, you are limited to the subject matter as dictated by the driver, depending on what mood he's in. For instance, if, for the previous fare, he had to travel a long distance to take someone a short distance, and said passenger complained the whole way about why there could be no one within a short distance, and complains yet again about the fare, much less the thought of even proferring a tip, you're better off keeping your frickin' mouth shut. 2) Passenger will kindly refrain from eating or drinking in taxi, unless you're being rescued from the after-effects of a hurricane, or a similar disaster. 3) I'm about as good as you're gonna get, so don't confuse me with other licensed drivers you're complaining about, who actually know more English than they're letting on, and come from a country where to wake up every morning and carry on throughout the day was an effort in survival that we'll never be able to relate to, and forgot more about legally picking your pocket than you'll ever know. I'm just a nice guy trying to make a living. 4) Surely, you can find something more substantial to talk about then the weather, can't you?

Ah, my perfect world. Would've been nice.
