I had a good friend, a woman who came to my wedding, who moved down to New Orleans two years ago, after having met a guy from down there. Her daughter and granddaughter followed her down. Kind of lost touch with her, we both lead busy lives.
A few days ago, I inquired of her sister as to how she did in the storm, and I was told that at the time, she was vacationing in Port Arthur, like three hours west. However, her daughter and granddaughter were still in New Orleans. For a few days, they were missing, and I kind of sweated this out.
Today, I heard from my friend's sister. Apparently, the daughter and granddaughter managed to wade through the water, find their car, miraculously get gas into it, and hightailed it out of Louisiana... they're back up here now, all safe and sound. However, my friend's best friend down there is a man who stayed with the daughter and the granddaughter through the storm, and it's possible that he lost his family. He's up here now, and his life is now a living hell. We're praying for him.
A million human interest stories, all in one big story that will not close for many years.

I am happy to hear that you can start to relax a bit and not worry, My ex husbands family lives in the new orleans area actually close to Metairie and I wa concerned but I am happy to hear they all got out before Katrina came through ...
