Video quality

So, some of the wmv and flv files I downloaded over the past several years seem to be more grainy and a tiny bit more pixilated than they appeared to be when I first got them. At first I thought it was just my files, but then I got a membership at French Tickling and their older files seem that way too.

I really don't remember older videos being that grainy or pixilated. With the rise of HD and higher quality videos, is it possible that my video players automatically set and update themselves to better suit the newer videos?

More importantly, is there a way to adjust my player settings so the older videos look as good as they did when they were new?

i don't think you can change that, but i wanna say there are programs that might help, but with older videos it may be harder. because of the way our video quality is now, it will still be graining just cuz the of the quality it was recorded in.

Were these clips you bought or freebies? The freebies are often rendered in lower quality on purpose.

Well, some were free some weren't. The quality didn't always seem so poor. Again, I just got a membership at French Tickling and their older videos seemed grainy too. I was just wondering if there was a program or certain things I can do to my players' settings to make them look like they did years ago. Like, can I switch in and out of certain modes?

I would suggest trying something like SMPlayer, which has many playback settings which can be remembered per video. I find that shrinking the video size to 75% often improves the apparent quality. SMPlayer also has a "deblock" filter that can reduce pixelization.
