Unbeknownst to most people, two versions of the same movie were made. The first one was declared a flop by the executives at Morgan Creek and never released. The second one became a flop after it's release.
The one we horrorheads saw in theatres last summer was the version by Renny Harlin - ex-husband of Geena Davis and all around filmic hack (his cinematic travesties include Cutthroat Island and Deep Blue Sea). His was the second version. The first version was made by Paul Schrader and I've read it's a genuinely creepy film, much better than the version we've seen...
"In this case, the film makers in question couldn’t be more different. On the one hand, you have Paul Schrader (the writer of what are arguably [Martin] Scorsese’s best works), and on the other, you have Renny Harlin, who is best known for making movies that nobody wants to watch. In an unprecedented move, Morgan Creek pulled the plug on Schrader’s Exorcist: The Beginning after viewing a cut they deemed ponderous and badly photographed, bringing on Harlin to craft a new version that would be more accessible to the skateboard crowd. Schrader’s film was denounced by the studio, and most viciously by writer Caleb Carr, who attacked not only the filmic representation of his work, but also Schrader himself."

So, it looks like Morgan Creek had to eat its own words and release the original version, hoping to make some money on the project or at least to break even.
That's show bizness for ya. Still, I'm looking forward to Schrader's version of the Exorcist:Beginning...
And above all, please remember:
GoD iS noT HErE ToDaY, PRIEST!!
